    Why didn't he go straight outside after the game instead of getting trapped in the deadlock? Kid could read the bluff in Buster's face but did not foresee the danger after his opponent was obviously not amused at all?!
    Oh of course, then we would have missed this great scene!

      You raise a good point, and, of course, you're right that the smart move would have been to get out of the joint entirely. But this early scene was not written just to create some action. More important, this scene tells us something about Steve McQueen's character in the picture. He doesn't always play the smart move and is willing to take great risks, sometimes when he should know better. This wonderful scene, in a way, actually foreshadows the tense climax to this classic gambling movie, even though the ending seems like a surprise. When you think about it, the ending is not as surprising as it appears. The gambling decision McQueen's character ultimately made in the end actually reflected a flaw in his character shown in the very beginning in this scene.

    • @isjawu
      @isjawu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think I know what you mean. He does not simply want to win, but wants to win a fair game and thus does not run away from the game like a thief, even when in danger. He knows, having played a clean game, he has the RIGHT to stay.
      Same way in the great game against the King, when he does not want the dealer to cheat in his favour, even if that means he could lose, which finally happens.

    • @markmerzweiler909
      @markmerzweiler909 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      that bothered me too. The kid would have been smarter than that and it wasn't necessary.

    I remember seeing this film when it came out, soon after “the Hustler “ I kind of thought it was a copy of “ the hustler “ only with cards. I can’t remember when I wondered why they played with cash and not chips. I was only 6 in 1961 ( hustler) and 10 in 1965 for Cincinnati kid. We lived in a small town with one movie theater so I can’t remember when movies finally made it to us. I doubt we got first run flicks.
    Why wouldn’t they have used Chips? It would be easy to explain buy in to novices.
