There are perms specifically formulated for use on bleached and high-lift colour-treated hair, though--they're a type of acid wave perm formulation (not all acid wave perms can be safely used on bleached and/or high-lift colour-treated hair).
It's CRUCIALLY important to find a perm specialist who REALLY knows what they're doing, though.
The perm solution is left in the hair for only a very short time (a few minutes) before being rinsed out and before the neutraliser is applied.

I may be mistaken, but I think that the perm solution used for digital perms may be a type of acid wave perm--due to the fact that the hair in the curlers is being subjected to high heat. "Cold-wave" perms (which are alkaline perms) are not to be used with heat.

DISCLAIMER: In the beginning she said "perms are relaxers." Completely incorrect. "Perm" is short for Permanent which permanently rebonds the hair to the chosen rod's size. Which is why it's typically used by ppl with straight, flat hair. Relaxers mean just that, it RELAXES the natural curl pattern. So yes most blk girls did get chemical help with their tightly coiled hair to either loosen the curl or straighten the pattern. They used Relaxers not Perms. Although yes they could perm their hair to a different curl pattern; however as a blk female have gone to beauty school she used the wrong terminology for what she was describing. (A Common misinformed mistake we grew up learning) Also, that "digital perm" is not new. It's the original way/ origin of perming. It was created by Karl Nessler in 1906.
Sometimes these talk shows are just for "show and tell" distractions while they give you false information. They make it look good so that the people who don't know the truth will believe that "they know everything." 🙄
