Ursa Mini Pro 12K in low light - So clean! BEHIND THE SCENES

- This is the behind the video of a recent shoot I did for Artgrid. This is the first time that I get hired to shoot stock footage (original content) and the approach is definitely different. The Ursa 12K did incredibly well in low light. I didn't expect it to be that clean. Most of the time was even cleaner than the BMPCC6K. Everything was shot in 8K BRAW 12:1, mix of 24p and 48p. ISO 800 for every single shot. Graded in DaVinci Resolve with BUTTERY LUTs.

@matteo Bertoli I think Artgrid made a mistake on their website as they state that the footage was captured on the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K. With that aside, this is some of the best footage I've seen on the 12K. There are a lot of people that say the noise is too much in low light but this video proves that it can look amazing. Thank you!

Thank you Matteo for your good work. I also send clips to Artgrid and recently they have had a problem with audio on my BRAW clips. There isn't a way in Davinci Resolve media management to remove audio. How do you get around this problem?

I have noticed few times the noise out of my UMP12K at 800ISO, could have had it underexposed but as soon as I go 640 it reduces by a lot. At 400 it's so clean. Although bit of NR at 800 and downsample to 4K and no issue either. That said Resolves NR (its probs my settings) does get rid of a bit of detail at times making it look like an oil painting depending how hard I go at it. Few people on the BM forums have had great results pushing NR quite a lot so I guess depends on the compression ratio maybe. I do need to do proper tests just to see how my sensor handles.
At the same time, no need to torture the sensor with not giving it enough light, and bringing down shadows in post can also help with noise if present.
here are some tips. Do not add contrast using the lift and gain wheels. Add contrast using the contrast option in the primary color wheels section and you can mess with the pivot. or create an S-curse, in the curves section. This will reduce noise. Using the lift and gain wheel will lift the noise from the shadows and into your mid tones. Using the contrast option will keep your noise in your shadows.
Then noise reduction. Use both temporal and spatial. But with spatial do not use luma. That's what makes your videos look plastic. Unlink them and only use chroma. My settings are, Temporal: frames-2, luma, and chroma-5 highest-10. Spatial: chroma-10 highest-30.
Those settings should get most noisy situations taken care of unless it's really noisy.
Matteo amazing work! Pls i want ask you, is the ursa mini 12k make timelapses in some of the quality modes, in 12k or 8k or 4k, or in all the resolucitions? Pls help me whit this info, o i need ad external monitor like the átomos v12 , thanks!

The low light images are great. I have the URSA MINI 12K and I will like to use the same setting and the Buttery Luts for grading as well. Thanks for always.

I don't know what's going on but with my 12K footage in Resolve, it's so noisy in the shadows, even when it's bright sunlight, the histogram centered perfectly. This is in bright sunlight, let alone the dark.
Noise in background is so scary 😸
Matteo, fellow content creator. I created a video on manual focus. Anyway, heads up I used like 10 secs of footage from your manual focus video as a reference. I am not trying to rip you off just wanted to point my viewers over to your channel as a guy who uses manual focus all the time. Just did not want it to get flagged as some copy infringement deal. Oh yeah! I am not making money from license in this case. I was just hired by Artgrid to shoot original content and they pay me just like another regular client. Very good budget I would say :)
