Yeah, so what. I’m 74 and started my BJJ training in 2019 when I was 71. Like you, everyday my bod aches and my spirit is smashed. But, like you, sitting on a rocking chair and watch the few years go by is far worse than being smashed. I’m going to continue training until a day comes when I am unable to get out of bed and hear voices of angels telling me to come home.
I'm a 50y one stripe white and I've promised myself that I'll get to black before I move on. You are definitely keeping me in the game - many many thanks Professor Rick.
Congratulations from France, for this step. Never stop learning and sharing. Age is just a number I m 50 years old, and 1st degree bjj black belt, judo black belt and karate Brown belt, ans last year I decided to begin Shorinji Kempo and i began with a white belt. The most important thing is to take pleasure 🤙🙏👏 I love bjj and i will practise until the end if it s possible. Shorinji Kempo is also beginning a passion. Hope you the best as long as possible🙏
Great, insightful videos. I’m 62 and have maintained good flexibility throughout my martial arts life but in recent years (grappling) lower back pain has sometimes incapacitated me for a day or two afterwards. Three months ago, having found back care videos on TH-cam and performing reccomended exercises for only around 7 days, WALA, from previous pain levels of 9/10, l’m now down to 2/10 at worse, often no pain at all; 5-10 mins every other day or so keeps it loose and pain free almost all of the time… they’ve seriously turned my life around.
48 y/o purple belt, just got done training and sitting in an ice bath watching this. Professor Ellis you are inspiring and awesome. Thank you for this..
This video is very inspirational. I am a white belt 14 months in at 47 years old. Battling lower back pain and shoulder issues, but I love going to class, being with my classmates, and improving. It is better than the recliner for sure.
I’m 46…a full time teacher, Union Rep., EL Coordinator, tutor, mentor, father and husband. I train 3 times a week and try to lift/workout at least 2 times a wk. I find myself lacking motivation lately and this is exactly what I needed to hear. THANK YOU 🤙🏾OSS!
Rick my bucket list has just been added to - one day buy you a beer (or several) and sit down and have a great chat about life, etc. My issues with getting old are not about dealing with my physical issues (we've all got them so we deal with the best way we can), etc, but dealing with now having a limited life span to fit in everything I want to still do! Life is so short. We need to ensure every second counts!
That was beautiful, and I needed it. Kids tried to remove my head today. Wife asked me why I keep doing this. I couldn't explain. I'm goingvtovshow her this. Thank you.
6 weeks shy of 50. I started almost 4 years ago and have had a total of 18 months off for injuries and covid. When I first started an older brown belt said “for you it’s a marathon, not a sprint “. Very wise words, just keep showing up.
I am just back from doctor pain for the fifth time in 2 months, I am 46; my shoulders ache as hell, my elbows the same, my back is missing a disc and the very next one is close to nothing, both my meniscus have torn, I dress up like robo cop; elbow sleeves, knee guards, back support and shoulder pads and I still give 101%. I am a new purple belt and want to retire as a black belt. Just need to change my game, old man game...
I am 57 , still going strong . I roll almost every day, 3 times per week circuit training and teaching about 20 classes per week… The right mindset ,consistency in training, active recovery and healthy food are more important than age ;)
This is, by far, the best motivational video I have seen that I can relate to. I started BJJ 3 days after my 57th birthday. Soon after I was awarded my blue belt, the BJJ academy closed. I stopped training for 3 and 1/2 years, but I just started training again 2 months ago. I'm now a 62-year-old blue belt that enjoys training again. I tell my wife that I would rather have pain because of BJJ than to have pain for no reason. Great video! I will watch this over and over again. Thank you. Oss!
I'm only 46. Been at it close to 20 years now. I'm slower an less flexible than I used to be, and it takes me longer to recover. I don't train every day anymore but I do make a point to do 2-3 classes a week at minimum. Slow and steady is the goal now, I've given up on winning the race because there is no finish line. The journey is everything in this sport.
I'm a 54 yr old purple belt and I can proudly say that I'm just as inspirational to younger players as I am to guys my age. Mainly because I'm willing to take on the challenges despite my age.
Inspiring! I started at 39. After 2 years of training I am only a one stripe white belt but I already knew this is gonna take some sweet ass time and it's all good.
You have captured what’s been my personal mantra for decades. Started BJJ in my mid 50s, now mid 60s. Slow uneven progress -with many frustrations- but progress. Can’t imagine any other way to be. Please keep the videos coming.
POWERFUL! I have never been an athlete and I started BJJ at age 53 I will be 55 it's been a long slow journey of losing weight, gaining flexibility, training with a disability. The journey has been difficult but I'm worth every step. I started just walking around the mat because I couldn't run now I will be in my first tournament as a white belt ( told you it was a long journey) Never give up on yourself the recliner is not a destiny it's a choice and I choose to challenge myself. God Bless you.
Great video. I'm 43y/o 5 years in purple belt. I lost the opportunity to get my brown belt in 2020. My academy closed, my teacher returned to Brazil, and here I am without a dojo, without a teacher, just going to roll to friends academies from time to time, but nothing serious. I'm in no rush, I'll get my second black belt one day, this time in BJJ
Great video - thanks for sharing. I’m 57 - one stripe white belt. I cannot go back in time - so I have to deal with what the now is.. and that can be pain that doesn’t go away… getting smashed by young guys because they can… explaining black eyes, ears blown out … and limping. Sure - many days I don’t want to go… but I have my kids watching … my family - and worse… the thought of regret. F the recliner… keep going guys! We win together.
Just beautiful this video talks to me loudly, Im not old im only 34, but I had back surgery and shoulder surgery, I had a motorcycle accident where I was not able to walk for 6 weeks, also had a bad car accident ( luckily no bad injuries on that one) I train 5-8 times a week and some people tell me im crazy, well you said it best sitting in a couch waiting to die is not a option. My back and shoulder always hurt but I refuse to make excuses.
Hell yeah! Awesome motivation for older dudes in bjj who wished they got in the game 30 years earlier. Just did my first tournament at 53. Let's go train!
I am a 50 years old practionner, 1st degree bjj black belt, judo black belt, karaté Brown belt and last year, I decided to put a white belt in shorinji kempo. Age is in your head even if it is harder to recover with years. Taking pleasure is the most important thing and don't stop sharing your knowledges. Great vidéo👍🤙🙏👏
I started at a spry young age of 48, now 49... my only regrets are that I didn't start 20 years earlier. Learning new things and rolling make me feel more live than I've ever been.
2 years ago I downloaded your old man Jiujitsu course and it inspired me to start grappling since I couldn't find a BJJ school in Nairobi I decided to take up Judo at the tender age of 51 :) I'm thinking about adding Jiujitsu to the mix now that they have set up a couple of BJJ schools. Keep putting out this inspirational content and yes, "I'm old so what!"
Bro, your videos are so inspiring and uplifting. I will be turning 50 in December. I recently just earned my purple belt. Every time I see one of your videos it reminds me all I have to do is show up and keep putting the time in. I can barely move my neck some days and like you my back hurts a good majority of the time. But I refuse to give up. On the days I hurt really bad I still go and train but I go really light. Keep them coming bro. Us older practitioners really look up to you.
44yo and just started my Bjj journey two years ago. I'm a short grappler and not the strongest guy in my gym, but I decided that nothing was going to be an excuse anymore -neither age, nor strength, nor size. Your work and your words are an inspiration, Mr. Ellis. Thank you so much.
I am a 58 years purple belt .. I have been stopped training for more 25 years... I have been able to get my second chance to continue my jiujitsu , now I train 4-5 times a week to get sweat and enjoy my self ... I have been able to put a side my young ego ..... Tap if necessary and my training become more enjoyable......
Had me in bits! needed to see this.. just started at 43 over here in London, UK. Worried about keeping up, can i get flexible, am i past it. This helps so much. not in competition with anyone other than myself.. powerful.
50 yr old white belt. 20 days in and loving every second. My goal is to make black belt before I leave this earth. I wake up sore and beaten down every morning but I keep going. Yoga, weights and cardio have helped me last longer on the mats along with breathing exercises to keep the heart rate low when I’m getting smashed. Tap early and tap often to stay in the game longer and stay healthy. Thank you so much for this video you are a huge inspiration....oss 🤙
I have had set back after setback. Because of Covid and fears of the virus I have few options… either train online or pick another hobby. And although training online isn’t ideal, I will do what it takes to move forward. Thank you for reminding me to do what I can to stay on the PATH.
Thank you for the motivation. I'm a 57 yr old, 2 stripe white belt. I've been benched going on 3 weeks due to being pushed backwards over my neck while and stacked at the same time while rolling and attempting to hold a relatively new, much younger athletic white belt in spider guard. I thought I broke my neck at the time it happened. I've been sitting in my recliner while rotating ice and heat on my neck and back. Other higher belts told me that I should be more selective with whom I roll. Is that the key to longevity in this sport?
Yes, ive been injured countless times with the younger guys. Beware the young strong white belts. They are dangerous with their lack of knowledge and skill. There is nothing worse than getting injured and loosing several weeks if not months of training.
Watching your videos has really helped me i think i might give bjj a second shot im 34 but i sucked at it when I was younger so don't expect to be any better now
While I do have a certain amount of pride that at 56, I roll BJJ 3x per week. (Received my blue belt about 2 weeks before COVID shut everything down). I am more grateful that my team mates cut me no slack and push me to improve. My ongoing joke in class is that I do not train BJJ to feel good about myself! :-) There are days where it take every ounce of courage I have to put on my game face and show up for class. But, this is why I go! To test my resolve every week. I am beyond fortunate to have a great school, good coaches, and awesome team mates.
You don't need to stop doing things when you getting older but you need to adapt. I cracked a rib last week when inverting and got pressured, so moving on I will ditch inverting guard and find some new way.
I'm 50 years old, 2 stripe white, first comp done enjoyed it but lost an ACL so out for a year, I will be older when I get back in the mats, I will compete again... but I won't be old.. thats a mindset
I am a 51 year old two stripe blue belt who needs a new hip. i am no where near the best blue belt out there, but I doubt any blue belt or white belt in my gym would ever consider me an easy roll. I'll train until my hip is replaced next year, then I'll recover and come back and train again.
Im 41, first stepped on a BJJ mat 16 years ago, family and work life made it difficult to keep going after about 9 months in. 10 years later i attempted it again, this time 6 months of training and work hours didn't match up with the gym. 2 months ago my 16 year old decided he wanted to give it a go. I was taking him, and he asked me if i was going to do it with him? I had recently been in a accident, broke my tib/fib, ankle, clavicle, received a TBI, lacerated spleen and kidney, and im 41 now. Not old, but older than most the new guys and most the expierenced in they gym. My son came back with, how im there anyways for him, so why not. I have been back now, 3 weeks in, i feel good. Im hoping we both will be able to advance, and have fun together. Father and son.
Awsome video. In japan they have weds night old man judo at the kodokan old guys in there 70 80 even 90 still battling it out on the nats it was insperational
Yeah, so what. I’m 74 and started my BJJ training in 2019 when I was 71. Like you, everyday my bod aches and my spirit

I'm 39, and I started last week. Everything hurts, but it's a good hurt.
That is awesome!
@@ChipAltmanxD I started at 39 also. Best decision I made. Changes your life
Good for you man!!
Respect to you, and best of health and luck! Continue your road to youth! Osu!
I'm a 50y one stripe white and I've promised myself that I'll get to black before I move on. You are definitely keeping me in the game - many many thanks Professor Rick.

I’m in the same boat, except I turn 52 this coming Friday!
That's great Henry. I started jiu jitsu at 53. Family and friends think I'm crazy..maybe but who cares. Life is too short. It's awesome
48. Same brother. Feel like I’ve been run over by a truck after every lesson! Oss 👊
Glad to hear this! I’ll be 50 next month and am a brand new white belt. Professor Rick’s videos keep me going!!
my dad is 58 and started training last year, he’s in the gym 20+ hours a week!!
My dad once said, in regards to any endeavor you wish to start..."It's never too late until you're dead."
Great, insightful videos.

Hot instructor working there? Only joking man that’s great fair play.
I’m 51… started training BJJ two weeks ago. Never gonna stop!
48 y/o purple belt, just got done training and sitting in an ice bath watching this. Professor Ellis you are inspiring and awesome. Thank you for this..
Im a purple belt at 70. Still rollin
This video is very inspirational. I am a white belt 14 months in at 47 years old. Battling lower back pain and shoulder issues, but I love going to class, being with my classmates, and improving. It is better than the recliner for sure.
Thank you 😊so much for this message. I'm 63yrs old in jujitsu for a couple of months. You inspire and motivate ✨me brother. God bless you 🙏

Sitting on a couch waiting to die is also a betrayal of the divine spark each of us are imbued with.
51 year old blue belt, thank you for keeping me motivated!
I'll toast to you old man. Your wisdom shines like a beacon. Thanks.
Just cooling off after training and this pops onto my feed. Very timely, very relevant, thank you.

This female white belt really needed this today. I'll turn 46 in two weeks, and in one week I'll be competing against 18-year olds. Bring it.
I took silver in Gi y'all!

Please keep the videos coming.
I’m 51, brown belt, started with Rickson and then with Kron. Jiu Jitsu is life and this video is a good example of that. Well done!
i am in my early 40s, and looking to restart bjj, the motivation is there and thanks for the video.

Love it. I feel super old at moment, injured at moment. Frustrated, but no way going to stop

I’m 61 and just started jujitsu. The struggle is real. My mind says one thing but my body says another.

Even buying a recliner is not an option, 63, back to the mats after two years off due the pandemic. Love the videos.

I have one word... 'Timely'. Thank you sir.
Thank you for making this and speaking your truths🙏🙏🙏 51 year old white belt who has finally found peace through pain
Awesome!! Oss! Im not crying... You're crying!
That is now my go to morning Stoic meditation.
Incredible! Great motivation for everyone including us older guys.
Thank you.... I too-- am old with a Purple belt at 52 years.....so what....
I will always have this mentality from now on.
Just got outta class...this video hits home! Ty sir
Wow. Beautifully produced, beautifully narrated, wonderfully inspiring video.
Thank you so much man!!! Thank you! Thank you!!
Great channel for old warriors. Thank you bro!
I started at a spry young age of 48, now 49... my only regrets are that I didn't start 20 years earlier. Learning new things and rolling make me feel more live than I've ever been.
This guy is so inspirational a true samurai.
2 years ago I downloaded your old man Jiujitsu course and it inspired me to start grappling since I couldn't find a BJJ school in Nairobi I decided to take up Judo at the tender age of 51 :) I'm thinking about adding Jiujitsu to the mix

Great message and sharp technique, Rick!
Wow! Very nice. I love your channel! Great reflection.
Man do I need to save this!
Had me in bits! needed to see this.. just started at 43 over here in London, UK. Worried about keeping up, can i get flexible, am i past it. This helps so much. not in competition with anyone other than myself.. powerful.
You're the man, dude.
Amazing video, thank you. -52 y/o blue belt.
Yes, choose mellow colored belts over super athletic less experienced types. Enjoy!
Yes, ive been injured countless times with the younger guys. Beware the young strong white belts. They are dangerous with their lack of knowledge and skill. There is nothing worse than getting injured and loosing several weeks if not months of training.
Thanks.
BEAUTIFUL!!!! 54 here - 4 stripe blue…
Very inspiring. I need to push myself more my body keeps falling apart. Sitting still is dangerous 😅
Amazing 👏! stay active!
I needed this! :'(
You, sir, are pure inspiration. Thank you!
You're A Beast Bro !!!! INSPIRATION!!!!... I'm 63 Train EveryDay HARD.... Hard But Smart....
I really need to hear this some time.
Watching your videos has really helped me i think i might give bjj a second shot im 34 but i sucked at it when I was younger so don't expect to be any better now

Thanks! I needed this! Strong and inspiring words everyone needs to hear...!
Great motivational video needed to hear this🥋💯🔥👊🏽
I needed to see this today. Thanks
Thank you
You don't need to stop doing things when you getting older but you need to adapt. I cracked a rib last week when inverting and got pressured, so moving on I will ditch inverting guard and find some new way.
This is awesome Rick. You captured exactly how I feel
I'm 50 years old, 2 stripe white, first comp done enjoyed it but lost an ACL so out for a year, I will be older when I get back in the mats, I will compete again... but I won't be old.. thats a mindset
Training Hard When You're Young IS EASY... Doing it when you get OLDER is GUTS COURAGE POWER OSSSSSSSSSSSSS. !!!!!!!
Love this!!! I just started and I’m 40. You definitely inspire me. Thank you
Thanks sensei, i really need self reflextion, thanks again.
This is powerful inspiration. Keep rolling!
You make me want to train every single day
I am a 51 year old two stripe blue belt who needs a new hip. i am no where near the best blue belt out there, but I doubt any blue belt or white belt in my gym would ever consider me an easy roll. I'll train until my hip is replaced next year, then I'll recover and come back and train again.
Thank you Rick I needed this
Excellent!! Hard as I can for as long as I can. I've been breaking barriers my while life. Is it easy, hell no, but it beats the alternative.
Im 41, first stepped on a BJJ mat 16 years ago, family and work life made it difficult to keep going after about 9 months in. 10 years later i attempted it again, this time 6 months of training and work hours didn't match up with the gym.
