    Thank your for this throughtful and thorough opinion. I have been a stamper for many years and I do some foiling with a laminator, but even that I don't pull out very often. For my personal aesthetic, I don't think it's for me. I think the results are pretty though.

    I was on the fence for quite a while, but have a stamping friend on the other side of the country who loved hers and did beautiful work....sooooooooo. Treated myself to the Glimmer machine for my birthday last year! Amazing addition to my crafting collection... Always wait for the proverbial "sale"! Think I bought mine for around $80. Then gave a list of plates I thought I'd like to my kids for birthday/mother's day/Christmas...and now I have a nice collection for not a lot of money!! Not always mentioned, but you can use the Sizzix Big Shot die cut machine perfectly with this system...you do NOT have to use Spellbinders!
    So many great "how to" videos, including this one to help you get started too... Foiling is beautiful!

    The thing for me is, the less cards look handmade, the less point there is to buying equipment and materials and putting in the time to make them.
    Personally, I think using metallic embossing powder does the same thing that foiling does and looks more crafted.

    • @petmomful2260
      @petmomful2260 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel a little differently. I know the hand crafted look is pretty, but I have tried to step up my game and make my cards look more professional. All my family members know I make my cards, and the last few I have made have really impressed. I think both ways are cool. They don't always turn out real professional looking, lol, and that is okay. I have such fun making them either way. I get a certain budget each month to spend on whatever I want so If I want a certain tool, I can save for it.

    Love hot foil! As someone who is on a budget I have found hot foil to not be that bad. I got my glimmer on sale with a coupon and paid $80 for it. I bought all my foil for the year at 50% off and I wait and buy the plates only when they go on sale and I can also use a coupon. I’m choosy about which plates I get to make sure I will get the use out of them. I have also tried all the other methods of foiling and the price can actually add up with other methods. With the positives you mentioned it is more than worth it to hot foil for me. My favorite cards. Thanks for showing this Altenew flower. It’s been on my wish list for awhile I’ll get it when it’s on a very good sale. I have Altenews rose which is also beautiful.

    When you mentioned a learning curve with cricket I didn't think about the machine, I was thinking of guys wearing white clothes and batting at a ball about the size of an egg!LOL! I have a laminator already, so I plan on going in that direction. I have watched several YT about foiling and everyone seems to do things a bit different. Love that butterfly! I too have lots of butterflies as well as butterfly fabric for quilting. I have several sets of the coloring stencils but have never used them. Time to do so. I love that pink flower.

  • @Cre8iveCindy
    @Cre8iveCindy ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I love your honesty.
    Also, your comment about the companies with the word Pink in them is one to add to my list of companies with similar names. Let me tell you some of the ones that I have on my list {It's fun but I understand if you delete my comment or ask me to do so} Colorbok-Colorbox. Gina K-Gina Marie. Creative Expressions-Creative Imganitions. K and i-K and Co. Heidi Swapp- Heidi Grace. (I realize they're their names but still) Hero Arts-Hampton Arts. Then there are older ones like Daisy D's-Daisy Bucket. Francis Meyer-Melissa Francis. Quick Quotes-Quickutz. Stampendous-Stampibilities. There were two companies named Sweet Stamp Shop as well as two named Dies to Die For. I applaud companies with unique names like Lawn Fawn, Deep Red Stamps, Spellbinders, and others because there are way too many company names that start with the words: Paper, The Paper, Stick, Stamp, Scrap, Paper, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.🙃

    I got the Gemini one, as I'm in the UK. I kept seeing hot foil stamps in their sales, but they barely do any now, so we generally have to buy from the US, which is very expensive for us, and Pink Fresh Studios have a policy of $199 minimum spend and postage starts at $69, which is crazy expensive! We now have Spellbinders UK, and they charge £10 postage for 1 marker pen, which is also just outrageous! Oddly I picked up the Alternew one in a sale this Christmas from a UK store, but haven't had time to use it, and treated myself to the stencils. Craftwise I'm really busy working on steampunk costumes for the next Lavinia Stamps open day. Really enjoyed your video, thanks ❤️

    If you have a machine like the Silhouette, you can buy attachments, on sale is the best way as you get 3 attachments as well as a lot of foil. I'm sure the other machines have something similar. I think you can also use that print and cut to take pictures of you dies and then foil them this way too. Please look it up though as I am not sure.

      I'd say basic shapes first. PinkFresh and Spellbinders have some. They work great as frames. I have rectangles, diamonds and circles. I got they from PinkFresh because they have nice, thick ones, which make a big impact. Then I'd probably go for a couple sentiments that you use often.

    I have the Go Press and Foil. I had over/under foiling issues when I used it with my Big Shot Pro but since I got the Switch, I don't have ANY problems. One time through the machine...done and beautiful. No shims, nothing. It's become easy, peasy. I just wish I had space to keep it out all the time. I did foil my plates quite a few times until I got the pretty to plate concept. I have tried the other kind of foiling with okay results but my best results with that kind of foiling come from messy, messy techniques. Nice intro to hot foiling for those on the fence.

    I was actually going to recommend taping your plates with heat safe tape. You have to replace it occasionally, but makes it really handy. Also to eliminate/ reduce jumping, angle your straight edge plates like the first one, waste foil plate, sentiment plate etc.
    I'm really impressed how the blue concord & 9th cs took the foil. Many colored cs's don't do so well since they aren't smooth.

    Instead of that solid foil plate could you use a metal shim instead?
    eg like the metal shim you can get for the crafter's companion gemini system for cutting
    Another question: After you die cut the image or words can you foil that same image/words with the same cutting die or will it not work since I guess technically you already cut off that part of the paper... so it would be either foil or cut unless it has a shadow die ... right? I hope that second question made sense... 😅😅😂

    I have terrible luck using the solid plate for the reverse image. Almost never get anything usable. My biggest complaint about the Glimmer machine is that it grabs the base so hard that I almost can’t get it disconnected to take to the die cutting machine. So keeping things centered is almost impossible. It is pretty though!

    • @cherylthompson3882
      @cherylthompson3882 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too - I have never gotten a good foil with the solid plate, I have switched up my paper, extended the time, added shims (starting with 1 and going up,from there). My plate is also hard to pull up. I see people of TH-cam get good results with the solid plate so I assume you can do it but I have no luck. I will keep trying because I have the plates lol.

    • @shellyp8731

      In terms of the plate being hard to pull out and causing your design to shift, I’ve seen others let it heat up, then pull out the plate, then set up their sandwich, that way it doesn’t cause the shifting problem. Hope that makes sense.

    Not for me. Space wise and cost just makes it really hard.
    Love the results tho. But I skip most of hot foiling videos. 😅

    I can not get the solid plate to do a good job. The result is always scratchy looking. Your vintage look is what I get only worse.

      I just started doing hot foil with the Glimmer machine. And I’ve watched a number of videos about it, one tip, like someone else mentioned is to let the solid foil plate heat up extra long. That way there aren’t cold spots where the foil won’t transfer. Jennifer McGuire (may not have spelled that right, oops) suggests to pull the base away from platform, then add your cardstock and foil and glimmer plates. And run it through your diecut machine. This helps prevent shifting of foil issues. Plus, Rebecca Keppel always tapes her foil to her cardstock so no slipping.
      As far as the issue of not fully foiling with the solid plate, I’ve heard to run it really slowly 🐌 through your diecut machine.
      I hope this helps someone 😊

      A shim of paper might help. I find it works better with a paper shim for extra pressure. Also heating the solid plate longer.

    Get the foil off the plate with alcohol on a baby wipe.
