    On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-17-17.
    We’re looking at a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe in Silver Paint with a 427 CI L88 engine.
    The car's Owner is Phil Castaldo. Phil’s had this car since 2005. Phil shares details of this highly coveted Corvette which in 1967 only 20 were originally produced with a L88 427 cubic inch motor. Today 17 exist and about ½ of them were converted to Racecars because of this powerful motor when they came from the Factory.
    An amazing piece of automotive history.

    I found that car in the Boston Sunday Globe classic car advertisements back in 1989. I told my dad about it and we went to look at it. He bought the car and did the title search. He found Mr.Wiggins, interviewed him and determined that the car probably was a L88 based on the info provided. My father sold the car in the early 90's. I hope you're enjoying it Lou.

    This is the Corvette to have! What a beautiful car! The power, the looks, the sound! And so rare! Impossible to ever own one even if rich, The next best bet would be a 427/435, but those are rare too. To own/drive a 67 convertible with the top down, 427/435, ralley wheels, redlines, side pipes, any color, what a dream.

    67 L88 Option was $947.90 just for the Engine. You were also required to have additional Options such as J56 Heavy Duty Brakes which @ $342.30 was more expensive than 3 Engine Options by itself. The L79 SB and L36 & L68 427BB's were all cheaper than the HD Brakes. F41 Suspension,G81 positraction,K66 tansistorized ignition,C48 Heater/Defroster Delete (-$97.85) were all manditory for the L88 Option. All L88's in 67 had M22 Muncie (Rockcrusher) Close-Ratio 4 speed Trannys @ $237.90'The Winters Foundry #3904392 Aluminum Heads were identical to their #3904391 Cast Iron Counterparts(L71) being Closed Chamber with 2.190 int - 1.720 exh - Rectangular Intake ports/Square Exhaust ports. These heads were also used on the 16 built L89 Optional 427 Engines which used the L71 427/435hp
    minus the Cast Iron heads. The 392 heads were only used in 67; they were superceded by #3919842 used in 68 L88/89 production and up til June 69 L88 production. The port configuration was the same as the 392 heads but were fitted with 1.840" Exh Valves. The Casting itself was superior to the 392 head which suffered more porosity than any later Winters Foundry Aluminum head. All the Aluminum Heads were 356-T6 Aluminum Alloy but the 842 and later heads were heat treated different than the 392 castings and were superior quality. There were a Total of 22,940 Vettes built for 67 production. Convertibles out selling Coupes by 5,932 Units (14,436 vs 8,504)...... 67C2 Corvette is considered by many Vette Experts to have the best Fit/Finish of the C2 Midyears (63-67) Ironic that the Rarer L89 Vette with only 16 being built verses the 20 L88's will fetch 6 figures at Auction verses 7 figures for a Real Bonafided L88. Phil's Car could bring close to what the highest 67 L88 went for @ Barrett Jackson some years back (3.5 Million)

    Wow! As a freshman in high school I took with me everyday a Corvette Magazine with the L88 67 coupe in it. This is like one of the ultimate Corvettes. The 69 ZL1 would be tops. But I love the L88 cars. This is my dream car. 67 would be tops as like the owner said they only made 20 of them that first year.

    Around 1965 I was a kid and was walking home from the local park in the summer when I saw a new Corvette at the Heat Oil company parking spot near the street . It was yellow with black inside and I remembered a wood trim steering wheel and black vinyl roof. No other car look like it and had those hidden head light as part of the body that flipped over 180 degrees . Other kids noticed it and stopped to stare at it as I did. The speedo went to 160 which was unheard of for a steer car in my area and the Radio was vertical on the console section coming down from the 2 inner cowls that were like the 61-63 T-bird design as a 2-seater in the front .
    Those small bumpers were about enough chrome to accent the fiberglass body that didn't have seams like metal car that use trim to hide spot welds .
    I still have 2 lung and 2 kidneys where I may own a mid 60's restore vette or 57 T-bird on day from a Bucket List .

    OMG - THE SOUND! My old man had a '67 427 that had the L88 head kit added on (not from factory) - regrets selling it to this day. Says he only sold it when insurance companies moved from basing premiums on the cars themselves and incorporated HP - it just got too expensive. What a shame...

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Chris Cadillac, I'm at the car show on "drive in day" because for the actual show, the Fire Marshall makes sure all cars have the battery disconnected, and you have the cars roped off so you can only see them from a distance, So... this way we can 1) Talk to the Care Taker 2) Get inside the car and under the hood 3) start the car so you can hear it, which give you the Viewer MUCH more information then you could receive even if you were at the show. Hope that helps, Lou

    • @MBailey1977
      @MBailey1977 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason for 20 was the car was pretty much a race car. It had no fan shroud so it would run hot very quickly not moving. these weren't really advertised to the casual buyer.

    One detraction that would cost him points in a show is the overspray of the valve cover paint onto the headers (and some on that big block) that exists. That could be remedied by removing the headers and sandblasting them. I don't know about the orange paint on the block, however. No big deal in any case. Only important in a show. Could/will cost him points, and I'm not even a judge, just a purist. Sorry, I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

    • @thud9797
      @thud9797 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the way they were built Dale, for 68-69 Chevy left the aluminum heads bare but for for 67 they were painted along with the block. Now don't know that I've seen that much paint on the exhaust manifolds before but I'm assuming that with this high dollar restoration that it is correct. There was also orange overspray on the intake manifold as they used a quick mask on it before painting the block. These cars are usually restored to the "as delivered" standards of the NCRS so things like overspray and other things we normally wouldn't do have to be there to present the car in the condition you would have received it upon delivery from the dealer.
