I love my P520, use it all the time. It takes great pictures, and I don't have to carry extra lenses around! That is really important when your out on a hunting trip! Those hard to get wildlife shots are easy now. The video is good. Yes it doesn't focus as fast, but it gets those long shots with out changing lenses. With the Wifi options works great on the go. Set up your phone on a tripod by the feeder take shots from inside with your tablet. I leave the expensive cameras at home
I'm trying to understand what was solved with card they recommended. I tried all cards they recommend. It did not fix problems I experienced. With night conditions under extremely bright stadium lights - AF was painfully slow and the best photos are not crisp/sharp; also long wait time to take next picture. In same conditions I tested a low priced Nikon S8100 (10x) and got sharper pics and I can rapidly take pics; also Nikon L8200 (30x) is similar to P520 but faster, better focus, closer zoom.
Thanks, I needed objectivity as I was about to buy this camera. I wonder if the Sony Cyber Shot DSC h300...any ideas before I pay for them...I am definitely a beginner who wants to take shots of distant, stationary objects.
nikonp520 or canon sx 500 is... i read somewhere that sx500is has many manual settings wich mkes it unique plz tell me among two which is better with good battery life.
Mr. Gibaud, I wish I'd heeded your advice. My P520 arrived in the mail yesterday and while everything works as expected, picture quality is far lower than even that of my old Samsung L200. A shame, as I'd always had a high opinion of Nikon.
and how come so many people are disappointed with this camera? and why has Nikon acknowledged the problem issuing a list of memory card that seem to solve the problems I met? because there are problems, but maybe you used it from day one with the right memory card and did not encounter such problems.
I understand your point, but Nikon stresses the point on its mega super zoom, so it is logical that I test this part carefully. I do say that image quality is very good, when you manage to focus.
yes I did read it, I as mentioned in new note, Nikon was consulted and the reckon problems are solved using only the card they recommend. Solution have been confirmed by a reader. Nikon should put a note about this in the manual

I would like to take some action shoots (as I like martial arts, my family like drag racing and I'm planing on a trip overseas) so the issues with focus are of concern for me. What camera or camera's would you recommend for someone that knows nothing about cameras (but wants something better than a simple point and shoot)
Does anybody know how to increase shutter speed to take pics faster? I got thus camera for a trip to Scotland and need to be able to take pictures quickly ( from a train for example).

Manual is on the installation DVD or CD. You have to manually focus on some things like clouds. He's right though, I found the focus extremely disheartening. One way is to not start to film until you push the shutter button half way which makes it focus more correctly, then start filming. Never the less, there are ways around the problem with practice. Shouldn't have to though.

I am happy you found the right camera for you, Maybe you have the right memory card as Nikon as acknowledged that using some specific cards do solve the focusing problems.
I saw that Nikon P520 comes with a 4GB memory card which is included in the box. Does that card also give the problems that you have mentioned here? I do not own this camera, so pardon me if I am wrong.

The review is mostly about lack of focus at full zoom while recording a video. I own a P520, if you do not use 100% zoom, it is sharp 99.9% of the time in no darkness (both still and video). So I think you should've talked more about the other stuff besides optical zooming - there's a few for amateurs, like me ;)
well, I am happy you are pleased with your test... I did no say picture or build was not good I said focusing was problematic. You just show one zoom video.. and guess what? check the loss of focus on your test, minute: 2:29 this is is your test not mine. The camera feels great, good image quality... but what's the point if it does not focus correctly???

Thank you for doing this review. I was seriously looking at buying the Nikon P520. Not any more, and I no longer trust Nikon as a brand. They must know there are problems with this, and are selling it anyway.
NOTE: August 20th 2013. Nikon seems to have acknowledged the autofocus problem and thanks to one of the viewer who checked with Nikon they said it would work only with the memory cards they recommend on their site. The viewer says it fixed his problem.
Well I am glad you are happy with your P520.... it may seem poor for you, it is scandalous for me that people get blinded by features that do not meet what they claim to offer!

I can't see how you can give this camera a review like that I own one and the company (a third party) I bought it off highly recommended it and so did a consumer magazine. I have had no problems with it as I am an beginner starting out in photography as said half press shutter and focus is good. I have a girlfriend who owns a DSLR but prefers using the p520 more often than not and shes been doing photography for years.
Ya, I had this camera till someone stole it out of my back yard. I hated how zooming in all at once would cause the focus to take a while to get there. If you watch you will see the video go out of focus a bit here and there as well. The zoom is one speed too, can't slow it down. Panning horizontally is choppy. I don't believe there is any setting to correct this. Nikon sample videos never pan, only steady shots. I feel this is misleading. Spot lit stages have to be focused manually as autofocus and brightness auto intensity can't do it. Bells and whistles are what are best on this camera, not it's functionality. Don't hardly ever need a flash though, best aperture! GPS is not traceable if stolen by the way.
another cmt: I have been using a Nikon L8320. There is a similar focus issue when fully zoomed (30x). Of 100 to 150 shots, several were out of focus, which is still annoying. However, to be fair, I was zoomed onto a face at 500 feet. Most of the pics had amazingly clear, crisp focus (VR stabilized from shaky hands), with the subject in shade under a tree. In sunlight, the focus didn't seem to have this issue. Compared to a pocket type Nikon S8100, I could zoom in more, otherwise the same.

i'm confused about buying this one or the sony cybershot hx300. after watching your review i think hx300 will be the better option. any suggestions?
