    Failed with Macrium Reflect but achieved with AOMEI Partition Assistant, I guess it is because Macrium cannot clone disk with bad sector or bad files system.

    Thanks for this perfect video! just did a clone with Macrium on a Dell Inspiron 17 5000, 1TB. After installing the SSD the boot manager didnt find the new device. So I attached the old HDD to the USB to start the laptop. Now the message appeared that there was no boot device, but now the SSD showed up in the bios, put it as starting divice, and bingo! All up and running!

    Good idea on removing the ring thing. It's very easy to short out a component on the inside of your computer with metal jewelry. I stopped wearing my wedding ring when I got into IT / computer repair and it got me in trouble with the wife. Oh well...
    Of course, removing screws over an open case kinda defeats the purpose.

    Why do so many computers have multiple small partitions on the boot drive? Is this because the manufacturer has saved some sort of "recovery" data? Does UEFI care about the size of each partition or just the overall order?

    Hello! Thanks for the video. It's very informative. Just one question: You went from 500 GB down to 120 GB, so what files were left behind from the original drive? Did the software know to just copy system files, then anything leftover? Thanks very much.

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Leslie,
      Yeah, the software only clones/copies what’s used in the 500GB HDD. For instance, you have 500GB HDD or SSD, but at the moment with windows and your files you are only using 130 GB. Therefore, only those 130GB will be cloned to the new SSD, this new SSD could be 240GB, however it is more than enough to store your 130GB of information.
      Hope it helps

    Before starting the cloning process in Macrium, is it necessary to format the new drive in Disk Management first?

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Unless the nvme was used in the past i dont see a need for that.
      In most of the cloning i have done only a few times i had to “initialize” the new ssd/hdd in disk management.
      Normally i connect the new ssd/hdd to the computer and it is ready to be clone to.

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello,
      Yes, that’s 100% possible. First I would keep the old HDD intact for some weeks, just as a backup in case the new one fails for some weird reason. After that, you would need to format it and that’s pretty much it, then you can use it as a storage device.

      Hello Michael,
      mmmmmm I'am thinking the problem might be the external enclosure. Since hardware is more difficult to get than software, i would say try using another cloning software. I have two suggestions: 1) EaseUS Free Software, i have a video for that here: th-cam.com/video/4jH7EAHi_XA/w-d-xo.html
      2) Since you are using Samsung i would suggest its cloning software that you can download from here: www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/ go to "data migration", choose the language and install it.

      @@MyITWorkshop I thank you for replying from your IT workshop in a very busy schedule. I almost brought it to be resolved by a computer shop in Montreal but thought I could save it by your advice and my working together. I also didn't bring it in to the Geek Squad yet. So I have come back to my laptop cloning issue. You are right. I received the message from trying to clone with Macrium "Incompatible disk selected", "the target disk has an incompatible sector size for this operation" So I took your suggestion to download the Samsung data migrate method. But do I need to install the SSD driver first as it states in step 3. If yes where do I take the driver from? Samsung I suppose? That's as far as I got. I'm reading through the instruction manual. Help? Once again thanks and will I get through this yet. I almost got through the Macrium cloning which I understand better and was even able to resize my partitions if it wasn't for the incompatibility. I didn't use EasUS Free but it's no longer free. I still watched your EasUS video link. But I am hoping you can let me know about the driver. How do I know I already have the driver or not ? I am patiently waiting for your reply.

      sure that you install the Samsung NVMe Driver first.

      I have noticed that I have 4 partitions (1.system 2. none 3. C: drive and 4. windows RE tools) prepared on my source disk of 237 GB and is this the issue. Because Samsung says that it can only clone the C drive and two more drives. That means 3. It clones the system reserve partition automatically?

      "If a portable device (e.g. an external USB device) is connected to the Target Drive for cloning, then this
      software may not function properly because of the USB adapter." This is the last hurdle. I have the NVMeM.2 connected to laptop via a USB 3.1 to external enclosure.

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      I think you are referring to a Windows backup creation. If so, you select the destination, (another partition/external hdd, ssd/cloud storage), for that backup. Now, depending on how much information you have, (files, OS, video, etc), your backup file will be bigger or smaller. Finally, backup files need to be stored on other hard drives.

      Hello,
      You'd need to create partition in the old SSD, for example D drive or partition D. Then, copy all what is not related to the OS like videos, pics, documents in this D partition. From there, clone just partition C, the original that only contains Windows.
      Now, if you have software already installed on the original C drive such as Office, Steam, etc. You wont be able to separate them from the OS.........unless you uninstall them.

Other than that, make sure your windows 7 is 64 bits since I would imagine your Lenovo laptop processor is also 64 bits. Other than that, I don't see why it would not work.......maybe if one laptop has an Intel processor and the other AMD.......
      Note: Support for windows 7 has ended in January 2020. So, you will be exposed to more vulnerabilities from the internet.

      Hello J&j,
      That's a common issue when upgrading to a bigger SSD/HDD. To check your missing 200 GB, in the windows search box type: "computer management", once you open the app look for: "Disk management", next, you should see all the Disks you have, (if you have more than 1 or CD/DVD reader), there should be 200 GB of unallocated space, (normally in color black). IN MOST CASES to make use of it you will need to right click on it and select enable\create a new partition or something similar, follow the steps on the screen and your 200 GB will be available to store data.

    I followed these instructions and my new SSD when I boot the computer says attempting to repair and then goes into uefi saying it failed. When I go into Bios the computer recognizes the new SSD and has it as number 1 boot option. I put the old HDD back in and it booted up properly so its the SSD. Any suggestions? I noticed after cloning the SSD clone of C drive says D drive, does this matter? It happened on yours as well so I'm thinking not

    Hello, is it not necessary to resize C partition so that it could get into the new SSD drive? Macrium reduces the size of the C partition automatically? Thanks

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ivan,
      Let’s say you are going from and old HDD 500 GB to a new SSD 240 GB. The new one is smaller. Now, imagine the old one is using 180 GB out of 500 GB, in this case it will fit in the new SSD. If the old HDD is using lets say 300 GB out of 500 GB, it will not fit in the new SSD. What cloning software like Macrium does, at least the free version, is technically “copy and paste” ( i am just simplifying).
      Hope it helps

      @@IvanBorcin Says something like boot manager missing some exe file? How I fixed this issue with my SSD I cloned was that I used a windows installation/repair media this can be a disc or a USB flash drive. That you can boot into it and it gives you the option to install windows or upgrade windows in the corner there will be repair this pc. It should give you options like automatic repair which the program tries to repair the pc, I had no luck with this. It has things like recover from a image or restore point and one titled command prompt. This is what I used to fix mine. Of course I have windows 10 but I believe windows 7 repair media works nearly the same. The command prompt window appears typing in bootrec /fixmbr the prompt should come back as task complete, bootrec /fixboot this can come back as two results either completed successful or access denied and this one can be useful which is bootrec /scanos this one will scan the drive and find the path or paths to the OS present on the drive if their is one occurrence it should show the drive letter followed by the Windows 10 7 or so on. If it shows nothing is found that can be a problem. But it should be able to find one OS if its present. This is good. Now the final command is bootrec /rebuildbcd which this command rebuilds the boot manager required for the OS to well boot. This should come up as the windows path and it will ask you if you want to add this installation to the boot record type a capital Y for yes a capital N for no or A for all and then hit enter. For my problem typing Y for yes fixed my issue with this same error code. I hope this gives you some idea of what to do and fixes your issue. It took me like 7 hours to realize my problem was typing the wrong reply back on that question. I am not all that tech savvy when it comes to command prompt but this is what I found on the internet to fix the error code and get the OS to boot.

      Hello Edwin,
      Since your new /Ssd is bigger than the old one, it will only use 640GB on the new SSD. When you boot up windows it is likely that your ssd as 640GB. The remaining is not lost, it just not allocated. You would have to go to “computer management” then “disk management” and you should see in black color the rest of the space, from there right click on it and follow the steps to allocate it.

      My IT Workshop Hey there, The old HDD boots normally. When I swap out the old HDD for the cloned SDD I get a recovery screen saying “Your PC needs to be repaired” error 0x000000e . When I go into boot options the new SSD is the first in order to boot from. Not sure why I get this when the drives are identically except I had to adjust the partition size to fit everything from the old one, but all the data seems to have transferred successfully. Do I need to wipe the SSD now? I’ve tried looking into that and I couldn’t find a software that does this for free. Long reply but this is where I’ve gotten in the past 2 days working on this.

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey,
      Since you have the original HDD, so no data loss, I would try to clone it one more time, but this time don’t re size anything. If the data is too big for the new SSD, consider copying that “excess” data to an external hard drive and and just clone what fits in the new SSD. Another step would be only cloning windows and software that is already installed. The rest; video, pics, etc back it up in an external device and then when the cloning is done and it boots, copy it back.

    Does macrium automatically resize partions going from large hdd to smaller ssd not clear in your video? I used a Sandisk with the WD edition of Acronis doesn’t work will not clone tells me that not compatible.

    • @MyITWorkshop
      @MyITWorkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello GP,
      It all depends on what space is being used at the time of cloning. For example, if you have a 1 TB HDD, but you are only using 300 GB, you have music, videos, games, etc. Besides, you might more than the C drive, maybe you have partition D or more. When you clone you current HDD to an SDD or a new HDD, you select what partitions you want to clone, (In the video i only have partition C and Macrium resizes it since the new SSD is smaller than the old HDD). Now, you are only using 300 GB out of 1TB, if the new SSD/HDD is, lets say 250 GB, it will not work, since you need at least 300 GB. If the new HDD/SSD is 1TB as well, it will only use 300 GB, the rest you do not lose it, it remains as Unallocated space which you can still use.
      When you clone a hard drive, it only clones what you select, (partitions), and only uses what it needs, in our example 300 GB.
      I also use Acronis because it comes included with PNY. The only time it gave me an error happened when i needed to clone a 500 GB HDD, that was using a little more than 200 GB, to a 240 GB SSD. I had to reduce it to 180-190 GB and then it worked.
      Hope it helps
