Me when I’m playing video games. Asteroid is coming down? Nope. Not leaving my chair. Earthquake? Nope. Not leaving my chair. Burglar breaking in? He can take whatever he wants. Not leaving my chair.
Eustace is only abusive because he's jealous of all the attention courage gets from Murial, and all the times he saves her. Eustace is jealous because feels unloved by his current family all because he was poorly mistreated by his original family. Not much is known about his father other than the fact he made a deal with a talking whale, so it's impossible to know what their relationship was like. Eustace's mother constantly verbally abuses him to this day. And his late brother Horace was a bully all throughout his childhood, Going so far as to hide his secrets from Eustace after his own death. In the Deer Hunting episode, we get a flashback of Eustace in his late teens/early 20s, Horace would constantly make fun of him and laugh at Eustace's misfortunes, calling him "Useless" since it rhymes. Eustace in the present wants to prove to others & to himself that he's a man, yet fails to kill or outsmart a talking Daddy Deer to wind up being on the recieving end of his own shotgun after getting his ass kicked. Eustace's life is a curse on himself because he knows he's living his own worst fear; And that fear is being a useless, unreliable, unsuccessful man who can't recieve recognition from others, because he knows he's done nothing to be proud of. He's a farmer who's land is 99.99% infertile, so he complains that he can't grow anything to provide for his family. In the magic tree episode, he's relentless in his attempts to kill it because its existence removes any reason for him to be needed. He's so caught up in his own failures & jealousy, that instead of wishing the tree for wealth, or fertile soil, or even a bountiful set of skills, he chops it down after admiting to the tree that chopping him down will make him feel more important. Despite being an angry abuser, Eustace is the most mistreated, abused, bullied, and misunderstood character in the entire show. And so he takes it out on Courage because it subconsiously feels like he's getting revenge on his brother, and makes him feel relief that he's not getting abused this time round. Wonder why Eustace says "What did *_I_* do?" Every time Murial hits him? He's most likely subconsiously referring to when he was abused during his childhood.
I sort of noticed that as a child when I grew up watching the show I couldn't help but hate Eustace every single time he was on screen and I found myself just waiting until the end so that he would get hurt. I would always be counting down that moment, even if I've seen the episode a million times that was until his past was revealed. When Eustace drew himself and his brother on his shoes and repeatedly beat the one shaped like himself using his brother I had a feeling something that happened to him involving his brother but soon after showing the scene where his brother taunts and bullies him I understood why Eustace was so bitter. And seeing his shrew of mother treat him how she does I then realized that Eustace is just an unloved person. I thought if Eustace was just nice to courage more than he was mean then maybe courage could give him the love that he wants. Sadly he's in too deep and long realize that or even consider it
Arthur's voice was ok but it just didn't have the same meany selfish sound as Lionel's who did the first 2 and a half seasons before Arthur stepped in during season 3 replacing Arthur.
Eustace would definitely go outside out of spite if he was told he *couldn't* leave his chair But he would definitely find a way to also not leave his chair, at the same time
I like how Eustace is partially immune to science and Magic, neither science or magic can affect how he feels or thinks, they can't make him good, evil, happy or sad the only things that make him happy is money and scaring courage he always has the same personality regardless of the situation, it's even stated in the episode The Tower of Dr. Zalost how he's immune
That’s because he had an abusive mother, a bully for an older brother, therefore he had a rotten childhood. Perhaps the only person who treated him with kindness was the random stranger who gave him the hat he wears to this day.
Also completely un-effected by “the curtain of cruelty”. I think the gag is that he is so incredibly evil, mean, and grouchy, that no force in the universe can change it. To give credit where credit is due, Eustace does love his wife, and has shown effort and kindness for her on multiple occasions. Just….. generally not too successfully.
Yeah there was episode where Courage became a therapist and had to talk the family through a lot of panful stuff. Turns out Eustace's family had some relative that was vile abusive woman and feed someone to the Lochness Monster. @@Cacowninja

Does anyone else remember the episode where courage reluctantly helped a robber try to steal MT. Rushmore and the robber thinks they are his family. My favorite Eustace moment is from that episode. Eustace always reminded me of my grandad, he wasn’t angry or mean but he’d always wear a hat, disliked dogs (although he loved his cats), and was the biggest jokester I’ve ever known.
Eustace reminds me of my papaw, Muriel of my grandmother and Courage of myself. Literally all the same personalities. Papaw was a grouchy but good man who could be the most funny person you’ve ever met, tinkered on things all the time, worked on his vehicle all the time, tall and skinny. Mamaw is the nicest woman ever. Always cheerful and a good cook, and then there’s me, filled with anxiety and doubt in myself but I still like to think I always try to do the right thing.

When you look back at the show and realize; His mother belittles him, thinks he will never amount up to his father, and favors Courage over him. His older brother practically bullied him and never gave him an ounce of respect. Muriel often caters more to Courage than Eustace (often seen in the show) I'd say Eustace has every right to be the way he is.
He's at least got a motive. Judging by the size difference, I'd say eustace was probably pushed around by his older brother. A lot. And his mom wasn't the kindest either, probably letting it happen. When he found Muriel, he became completely and utterly dependent on her.

Courage did that once in Queen of The Black Puddle and it made Muriel sobbing, miserable mess. And Courage loves Muriel like a how child loves their mother, he couldn't stand to see her like that. So he got Eustace back just to make her happy again. Courage doesn't hate Eustace so much as he just learned to put up with his asshole nature.
At one point Eustice did pat courage on the head and say good dog, i dont remember the situation though. I think courage got him money or something lol

Eustace always reminded me of my grandad, he wasn’t angry or mean but he’d always wear a hat, disliked dogs (although he loved his cats), and was the biggest jokester I’ve ever known.
I don’t trust anyone who dislikes dogs. They’re the best animals ever.

Eustace reminds me of my papaw, Muriel of my grandmother and Courage of myself. Literally all the same personalities. Papaw was a grouchy but good man who could be the most funny person you’ve ever met, tinkered on things all the time, worked on his vehicle all the time, tall and skinny. Mamaw is the nicest woman ever. Always cheerful and a good cook, and then there’s me, filled with anxiety and doubt in myself but I still like to think I always try to do the right thing.

He's at least got a motive. Judging by the size difference, I'd say eustace was probably pushed around by his older brother. A lot. And his mom wasn't the kindest either, probably letting it happen. When he found Muriel, he became completely and utterly dependent on her.
