- In this animated short, Sleeping Betty is stuck in bed, victim to a strange bout of narcolepsy. The King calls on his subjects to rescue her and they all respond to the call: Uncle Henry VIII, Aunt Victoria, an oddly emotional alien, a funky witch and a handsome prince. But will a kiss really be enough to wake the sleeping princess? The film, drawn in ink, is a classic example of the anachronistic and playful world of Claude Cloutier.

So perfect. The wry humor, and the clever juxtapositions- horse pulling a car, the broom-vacuum, prince S.O.S., moose head on a dragon. Makes no sense but makes perfect sense, beautiful.

Did you notice the knight with the axe in his head would make a clink when the doctor checked his leg reflex as if he had on his armor on still?
And then on the other on his horse with the suit of armor and the orchestral music the. Suddenly he passes the Wild West and the music changes? That got me laughing so hard.
And the horse literally fighting the moose while the knight just hung there bc they were actually really used as weapons. Funny and kinda grim.

The sheer silliness of the whole thing is absolutely incredible. I haven't seen anything with such density of visual gags for a very long time.
I love how noting is normal in this animation. You expect something but that doesn't happen. Like the horse coming out of gate 2 and the bow hitting back.

They were having a lot of fun with the "walk cycles" on the horse in particular. Love the way they adapted it to a dog's running gait in one section. Very effective visual gag.

That is entirely intended, looking at the french title at the end of the credits (Isabelle au bois dormant). The french title for Sleeping Beauty is "La belle au bois dormant".

The style is gorgeous! it's definitely like those illustrations we see in story books. It brings a sense of nostalgia, both the style and the slapstick humor. Love the creative amalgam of medieval/fairytale elements and modern lifestyle and technology. Everything is so wacky and unpredictable that I burst out laughing. Kept me hooked 'til the end XD

He was drawn to look like Sigmund Freud, who often seemed to think what was wrong with your head had something to do with what was going on with your lower regions. No doubt a commentary on head doctors ( or as zefrank puts it, brain witches)

It's actually an extisting cheese brand, coming from France: "La vache qui rit" (the cow which is laughing). And did you notice the car pulled by 2 horses: It was a citroen 2chevaux -which means actually 2 horses ;-)

I'd say that this would be perfect as a Monty Python bit, but it does stuff with animation that would be impossible for them to do with props and actors! My favourite, of course, is the doctor's glasses doing all of the expressions for him! absolutely fantastic animation, this is why I'm proud to be Canadian.
