- Don Bentley is a former U.S. Army Apache helicopter pilot who flew QRF in support of Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. Launching with only a frequency, call sign and last known location of the four man SEAL reconnaissance element, Don and the QRF flew into harm’s way. One helicopter and the 16 warriors aboard would not make it home. This is a powerful conversation with someone who has spent years dealing with the emotional aftermath of that mission and has learned to channel those feelings into his writing.
Following his time in the Army, Don worked for General Electric before once again stepping up to serve as an FBI Special Agent focused on foreign intelligence cases and as an FBI SWAT Team member.
Today, Don is the New York Times bestselling author of the Matt Drake series. The next book in the series, Hostile Intent, releases on May 3, 2022.

Oh wow, this is so hard to watch, his pain just hits my heart. To think that this wonderful man hurts so much 16 years later and that pain comes from feeling that he screwed up is heartbreaking. He did not screw anything up. He is courageous and remarkable and I cannot thank him enough for serving this country so fully! I hope he reads these comments…I hope he sees the hero that we see….I pray that he is experiencing peace. Those moments do not sum up his life, they are part of it, and the best of life is ahead. Living fully for those that cannot. I so wish that he would not feel like he needs to suffer more pain. I am SO grateful for men like him. My son in law is a USAF helo pilot currently deployed to the Middle East and my family wants you both to find joy!
Though I'm a Marine, I'm very proud to have "gotten to know" this Army Helo pilot.
This one brings me to tears. Despite hearing about this over the years - despite being in a position to save and lose lives - I feel his pain. Helpless. God Bless the souls that did not die in vain. God Bless the life and story of Marcus Luttrell.

Awesome Jack & Don《☆》Having been in Army aviation myself I can totally relate to Dons story. I was eliminated from Flight school during the Combat skills phase. I took the option to stay in the Army & attend the UH-1 Helicopter repair course just a few blocks away from the Warrant officer barracks at Ft Rucker. I eventually transitioned to working on Apaches. They weren't very good aircraft. I'm sure they're much better now with the new rotor head & bigger engines. Blood Wings were highly encouraged for Army helicopter Crew Chiefs but optional. Huaaah🔊😎🎱☮🖖👍
Great podcast. My first duty station as an E2 Private 11B was in Korea with 1/503 INF AASLT (Nov 1997 - 1998). Rode on lots of Blackhawks and loved it. I was at Camp Casey and it was a good first duty station before going to the 82nd.

What a textbook example of the brotherhood of these warriors, and how serious, and dedicated they are to supporting one-another. This soldier has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, whatsoever. On another note, it's very cool that he's a "Buckeye", as well.

Knowing what I do now about it being Lying Luttrell's first firefight and he was rescued with almost all his ammunition! There's a IR Predator drone feed of him running away from the team! How can he live with himself

Hearing him talk about flying the 58's. Reminds me of all the times my friend Chris used to try and get me to go fly with him on one...I had seen one crash in Gulf War 1 so I told him no way.. although he was one of these best pilots I knew and a great guy....He and Corey were two of the pilots on Turbine 33....both great dudes.
Continuing to listen... getting angry again...I wonder why I watch this shit.....but it helps me remember these guys and some good ole days.

Great story. Breaks my heart thinking about how he felt. I have felt some of the same things, really resonated with me.

I’m extremely impressed with him&his front seater and his wingman’s trigger discipline! Believe it or not that’s incredibly difficult in that situation. I mean not knowing where the 4 SR team was at. I would say the wrong thing to do would’ve been shooting the mountain up. - also he hit the nail on the head. The mission was sorta or well it was a suicide mission and several people had recommended against this operation. It’s not a 20/20 thing we had literally learned these lessons in 2002. But it was devgru and delta so the lessons learned didn’t trickle down very well. of why you don’t send small SR teams into Satans cereal bowl which is what K-Val is. Especially without a automatic weapons.
PS, wife and I read all 5 books and loved them all. Preordered book 6. But please write Raiffe into future operations with Reece. Team work. You built that relationship with Raiffe and family so well, but he disappeared after he took the crossbow shot in the frigid waters off the Russian coast. He’s healed up and Reece needs a partner to save the world. God bless and get on to book 7. Thank you.

I don’t like the fact that the movie lone survivor did him and his crew wrong though! Shows once again that Hollywood can’t do it without bs… in the movie the apache pilots assigned to the QRF leave the QRF by themself, responding to another mission… i don’t get why Hollywood always needs this bs!

The Roberts Ridge decision is so very hard to accept. I read the books new arched the History Channel documentary and was so angry. As an American without military service but immense love and pride for,our country, it is so terribly upsetting that a decision was made not to send assets to those Americans in need so as not to risk a third bird. Of all the assets at our disposal, that we did not get that bunker destroyed and our soldiers rescued and treated is something I have yet to hear an acceptable answer. I just can’t put that decision together with leave no American behind, or with the proffered reason not to lose another bird. Those soldiers waiting on that mountain watching their buddies die is, in my mind, had to be so demoralized and angry and that is inexcusable. Their families must feel so left behind in the most real sense. Grrrrrr

and here is a vast pool of information on a side of the incident that, I had not known...
This was such a gripping interview...
basically shut down the war, to recover these guys...
and then our current administration just leaves that country like the 5 o’clock whistle blew...,
and nothing is ever spoken again about what and who is still there...
so disgusting and sickening...!

Looks like SOP hasn’t changed much when firing on the bad guys. while on patrol south of Danang Viet Nam we were fired on by single bad guy wounding our corpsman. A single male was spotted walking away from the river between us and him. But the officer with us yell not to fire on this person because no weapon was observed. It didn’t make any sense then and still don’t.

There is a black mark on the whole story due to the propaganda and I hope to one day hear the unadulterated version so that we can truly honor the heroes involved.

Why do helicopters lose power? Because they lose altitude and speed?
Air is thinner at higher altitudes so the rotating blades don't generate the same amount lift they would at lower elevations. Also, flying close to terrain can cause some interesting flight characteristics caused by rotor downwash reflecting off of the ground unevenly.

even though it brings pain to my heart
it's a way to honor the fallen
at least, i guess, it's a start
i try every day, like my great uncle said,
to do good and be a good man
and by telling the stories of those who gave all
to honor their memory the best that i can.
My great uncle Porter never said much but he would speak to my dad from time to time about his time in the war. My dad was in the 10th special forces in the mid 1950's. He was supposed to go to Korea but went through a windshield in a car wreck a couple of nights before he was to leave. The Korean war came to an end and my dad left the military shortly after. He was adamant that I never join the army and painted such a dismal picture of life in the army that I was convinced that it was not for me. So i went to college and on to optometry school and made good friends and married a great woman and have two wonderful children and yet... I sometimes "think myself accursed...and hold my manhood cheap" that I did not serve.
Thank you to all who have served. Thank you for the life I get to lead. Thank you to those who provide a platform so that men and women can share their stories and give us the chance to honor them. I tell my daughter every day when I drop her off at school "Do good.Be good."
