Invasion of the Tree Milkweeds

  • Calotropis procera is a weedy milkweed tree that's not native to North America, but at lower latitudes in the neotropics it thrives and forms a huge nectar source for insects. Learn about this odd plant, a cousin to our North American milkweeds.
Your contributions support this content. It's sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

I hope not all milkweeds are toxic. Up to southern Ontario where I lived long ago, we used to collect the unopened flower clusters, steam ‘em and put some butter, salt and pepper on it. Deeeeelicious! I had to go back about 15 years ago, grabbed some of the fruit which was just about to disperse seeds, put it in a paper envelope, flew back to Vancouver Island thinking I should be careful not to let it get loose -invasive, lie you say. I worried all winter-but it was for nought: a mouse found my envelope and ate every single seed. Bummer. I won’t be back to Ontario again.

Winter floods bring more arundai donax (like bamboo), those horrible castor beans full of deadly ricin, and less pernicious wild tobacco. Those weeds are the result of human fuckery, along with the illegally dumped rubbish that the high water brings. The gift that keeps on giving.

For trees : Taxodium distichum, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Nyssa aquatica, Glyptostrobus pensilis. There should be a ton of cool flowering shrubs native to your area too that can take acidic, water-saturated soil, just have to find where to buy them. Might have to mail order. It'll be worth it though, beats buying Home Depot garbage. There's a lot of diversity among native plants of that region though. Worth doing the research.
