    So great to see Sir Tony still bringing a lot of excitement to history. After all these years (decades?) his enthusiasm and energy carry on. Thank you for sharing this!

    In historic terms, “little Britain” referred to Ireland. In old Irish, “An Bhreatain Bheag” (meaning ‘little Britain’) referred to Wales.

    @1:24:10 Interesting to know that the derogatory term "spinster" comes from "spinner" because they were financially independent and had no need for marriage. It's funny how society keeps on trying to shun women who don't follow the rules and have no desire to, either.

      Listen, society doesn't "try" to shun and humiliate women. We (the royal we) don't try anything. We just do it.

      It was better to be called a spinster than a witch, those people loved to burn people back then.

    • @unbanned6175
      @unbanned6175 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea i think that might be somewhat wrong, that was definitly the case sometimes but nothing has really changed, people have always looked down on single people and single people have generally more money than others. I guess one way to look at it is independence, but it was also mostly because many women just couldn't find a partner or their sexual preference was basically illegal in those times. With most men easily being able to basically buy a young girl from a father and marry her, many women past a certain age never managed to marry.

    From what I understand, the 'spinster' of the latter connotation was usually the youngest daughter of the family, who couldn't marry because she had to stay home to care for her elderly parents. By the time they died, she may have been too old for any suitor to be interested.

    Slavery did not end in Britain until 1834 but remained in the East India Company, Sri Lanka, and Saint Helena. Stop acting as if the Brits were great humanitarians. Considering the fortunes that people built on the backs of slavery and colonization.

    An excellent documentary. However, Sir Tony is well-known as a great actor and presenter, and he does not have to descend to silly Monty Pythonesque moving mouths and funny voices, which detract from his narration of such a fascinating history.

    Why do the producers of this episode think it’s acceptable to ridicule the Catholicism and spread false information about religious vocations??? Would this have been done toward Islam or Judaism?

    • @blacksunsigrune8831
      @blacksunsigrune8831 ปีที่แล้ว

      This show is probably financed by the j€w$ so no criticism, and Islam would fight back. So, they pick on the one they have de fanged and de clawed.

    • @blueneptune825
      @blueneptune825 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The producers of this episode didn't engage in ridicule and they certainly didn't "spread false information" about anything. Catholicism was the state religion and as such held a prominent place in the social structure; this episode addresses the role the catholic church played with tongue-in-cheek humor, not ridicule. As far as judaism or islam goes, neither of those religions had political power nor were either interwoven into the fabric of daily life of the citizenry of England so tossing them into this episode would make no sense.
