  • The Dodgers have a three-game battle versus the San Diego Padres, which could prove to be a potential postseason preview. Los Angeles Times beat writer Jack Harris with columnists Dylan Hernández and Bill Plaschke talk about the significance of the series and wonder if the Dodgers can muster the excitement to take the West this series.

bro manny was the biggest reason the dodgers even were able to get to the world series in 2018. booing him is stupid. most dodger fans don’t know why they hate machado. (i’m a dodger fan)

As a Padres fan….Good luck to the Dodgers this series. A lot of good teams in the NL right now. No team is safe.
      Should be fun!

If you’re such a big dodger fan, you somehow missed the game when Cody Bellinger robbed a home run from Tatis and Manny was acting like a kid. I loved Manny when he was on the Dodgers but the Padres have been the cockiest team in the league since he joined them and then the Padres disrespectful Kersh and if you don’t know about that, you’re not a real dodger fan

The Padres have had an unusual amount of come-from-behind wins since the All-Star Break; in many of those games, they were down by over 4 runs. This means the other team's bullpens have coughed up the lead and the game. Other team's starters have been effective at holding them to a run or two for 6 or 7 innings, while their starters have coughed up quite a few runs in the first and second innings before they have settled in and shut them down the other team. Therefore, I think it will come down to the bullpens. I believe whichever team's bullpen can shut down the other team from the 7 to 9th inning will prevail.
I believe he Dodgers need to take advantage of the Padres starters before they settle into a groove by being selective at the plate and making the starter work. And if they do get the lead do not let off of the gas because the Padres bullpen has been outstanding. Their closer has had a few hiccups lately giving up a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch with an out to go to the opponent erasing a 3-0 lead in the ninth and blowing a 2-0 lead to the White Sox in the ninth by giving up a 2 run shot to tie it in a similar 3-2 pitch with an out to go. In both situations, the batter had fouled off 5 or more 100mph fastballs until they eventually timed them.
Their closer, Suarez essentially relies on his fastball until he can locate his change-up for strikes. He is vulnerable to similar outcomes. So the key is to force him to throw strikes with his secondary option while sitting on his fastball. Nonetheless, their bullpen has been above average to great but not unbeatable.
The Padres offense has been much different than the past few seasons. Their lineup has much more balance and is less dependent on the top of the lineup to come through. They have received above-average production from the bottom of the lineup, including a major boost from their rookie centerfielder, Jackson Merrill. Who has come through in the clutch with his late-inning heroics?
But the biggest difference is they have been a much better contact-hitting team with less strike outs. This alone increases your odds by putting pressure on the defense to make plays. Plus a strike outs can only produce nothing but an out. This approach has contributed to their league leading team batting average and has produced wins from a multitude of ways from playing small ball to going deep. In the past, they counted on their star players to go deep or to carry them. This version of the Padres is less reliant on them and has been more adaptable.
I think it is more important for the Dodger pitchers to not let up once they get through the Padres Top of the lineup, they should apply the same focus upon the bottom of their lineup. If they do that they should be fine. Anyway, that's my lengthy analysis of what to expect.

The way these guys sound I feel we’re battling for the 6th spot😂. The dodgers have survived all year long AND have the best record in MLB. The past few years they have cruised into the playoffs and have cruised right out. This series is NECESSARY! It’s good to have the pressure on the big dogs. They keep answering the call. Let’s hope they still do.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but there is something different in Shohei right now...his level of emotion is way up, and I think this opportunity to be in the postseason and finally, finally play meaningful games is having a huge impact on him. The home run Sunday almost seemed inevitable and it seemed (at least to me) like Mookie just fed off of that moment.
Hopefully they take this Padres series and end this thing now. After two years of agony, I believe these guys are ready.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Dodgers manage to score a total of 5 runs in the entire 3 game series. That's how dominant Cease and King along with their high leverage relievers have been for them.

This is going to be a great series, LA has a tough lineup with Shohei, Mookie and Freeman batting 123. Pads have better pitching and are about even at the plate and are better defensively, it boils down to who gets the breaks and the calls. Arraez, Tatis, Profar, Manny, Merrill, Cronenworth, Solano, Bogaerts and either Diaz or Higgy at 9, no easy outs. Whoever wins the division will have earned it and both could meet in the playoffs. Gonna be must see baseball. GO PADRES!

As a Padres fan, I really enjoyed this. I would be lying if I said I was not nervous about this series. I think a couple things the Padres have going for them is their current manager, who is a true gem, and our pitching and bullpen. The Padres were very smart to go after all the quality relievers they did this year.
