I lived in Nebraska a few yrs ago... I went to Lincoln to show my respects for Brandon... I know transgender have a hard life to live, I have a cousin who is a trans man... my son has a best friend who is trans man he has many social anxiety issues... we live in a small town where of course being gay isn't accepted so you know being trans isn't... my son is gay and it's a hard enough life for him... He was a amazing person who although being a amputee, hiked huge mountains and he was a compassionate person. He was leaving on a bus to go home only a few short hours after this happened.
Omad2468 Phillip’s family are very private and wanted their privacy when this happened, but they did feel like it was wrong for them to leave him out of the movie.

I hope Michelle has changed her opinion since her days on the Maury show or the interviews where she almost seemed to laugh at what happened. Side note, many dont know that Brandon's family had to watch as Lana laughed and joked with Lotter in the court room. Others also aren't aware that Lana saw both killers before they went to Humboldt and it was Lana's mom who told them where Brandon was. Lana felt no urge to call and warn Brandon or the police despite the men saying they would be sticking a knife in someone. As you said they were kids then and they are grown and have families of their own now so I would hope Michelle would appreciate how she has been able to enjoy the last 23 years where as Brandon was not so lucky. You seem like a kind and caring person but I have trouble empathizing with Lana, her mother or Michelle.

I have watched the movie and doco and read the book and I honestly believe that Lana set it all up and I believe her parents were in on the execution of Brandon. In the book Brandon was talking to his mother and he said to his mother Joann that he believed Lana set the rape up. I was just so shocked and so sad that I believe it too. So heartbreaking for him to have that feeling. How scared, heartbroken and feeling lost would he have been😢😢 my heart just breaks when I think about it all. Also in the book Lana and her sister came around to Lisa’s house the day of the execution and the sheriff or deputy separately spoke to them both. What a coincidence to rock up after the murders. Lana knew. Just a heartbreaking story.
The one thing that I think was very disturbing about this video was when you said that they were all young kids at the time and suggesting that that had something to do with their behavior. As someone who is a part of the LGTB community, I take offense to the fact that you and others think that if they were of an older age or a different time that perhaps they would not have killed him! So while reading you may get the idea that hanging out, screwing around and getting drunk was ALL these people did when really, the author is simply describing scenes where relevant conversations took place. Instead of immediately jumping to the offensive remember that every person is simply a person much like yourself. Think about what she said in the context in which you yourself may have used the same description & what you'll come up with is much more likely to be what the person means. I don't know why you'd immediately assume she was trying to excuse roe & murder as "just being kids" since in no way did she even imply that.

Here is my weird question. After the murders Lana Tisdel and her mother were on a talk show? It was the first time I heard about Brandon. I was working so I couldn't stop and listen but that is the way I recall it. There is no documentation that Lana was ever on a talk show prior to the film BDC. I recall being touched at her sincerity when talking about Brandon. It was clear she was from a "rough" place but she was so altruistic I can't forget it. I even want to say it was Geraldo but again. Nothing to support that. It was a shocker to me on the talk show because I wondered "How did he pass?" This was in 95-96 I believe but I could be wrong??? anyone out there in internet land recall this as a fact?

BOYS DON'T CRY chronicles the events leading up to Brandon's rape/murder, so it only documents the last month of his life. That's why it doesn't have much about Brandon's upbringing or his life prior to his move to Falls City. However, it doesn't make the movie 'untrue.'
Actually a lot of the plot in Boys Don’t Cry misrepresents actual events and details, even leaving several characters out- including another man who was killed along with Brandon and their friend.
That was a bad time, early 90's I believe. I don't know anything about Nebraska but I know small towns it's hard to be LGBTQ openly. He should have come to New Mexico because it's more accepting here even back then. I was living in Santa Fe at the time of his death and most of SF was gay from what I remember. Such a tragedy.

+teresa bhopal I have had numerous conversations with michelle, reanna said that brandon wasnt much of a partier that he basically did whatever the crowd was doing. She said he would have a beer or two and smoked cigarettes. She said he would do anything for anyone! We talk about every day things now that I have become friends with them. I'm so confused about how you made these connections. this was such a tragedy and most of what has been told paints a lot of the survivors in such a negative light that I would think they wouldn't be open to discussing it. +Britt D I made the connections during a time i was seeking any and all info on him. I like you and joe was very intrigued by his life and how brave he was. The ones I made contact with, after building a rapport with them they were very open to talking about it. Everyone connected has went on with their life and done the best they can. His mom is probably the one that has taken it the hardest and thinks of him daily. He has def left a mark on their hearts.

Dawn Haschalk I don't think she meant it as a way to "excuse" the murder or rape but I've noticed that a lit of people tend to judge many of the people involved fir the other parts of their lives- running around, dating each other off and on, changing jobs frequently, drinking, etc. Another thing to remember about both the book & the movie is that you're getting a condensed version of part of these people's lives. So while reading you may get the idea that hanging out, screwing around and getting drunk was ALL these people did when really, the author is simply describing scenes where relevant conversations took place.
Instead of immediately jumping to the offensive remember that every person is simply a person much like yourself. Think about what she said in the context in which you yourself may have used the same description & what you'll come up with is much more likely to be what the person means. I don't know why you'd immediately assume she was trying to excuse roe & murder as "just being kids" since in no way did she even imply that.

Here is my weird question. After the murders Lana Tisdel and her mother were on a talk show? It was the first time I heard about Brandon. I was working so I couldn't stop and listen but that is the way I recall it. There is no documentation that Lana was ever on a talk show prior to the film BDC. I recall being touched at her sincerity when talking about Brandon. It was clear she was from a "rough" place but she was so altruistic I can't forget it. I even want to say it was Geraldo but again. Nothing to support that. It was a shocker to me on the talk show because I wondered "How did he pass?" This was in 95-96 I believe but I could be wrong??? anyone out there in internet land recall this as a fact?

BOYS DON'T CRY chronicles the events leading up to Brandon's rape/murder, so it only documents the last month of his life. That's why it doesn't have much about Brandon's upbringing or his life prior to his move to Falls City. However, it doesn't make the movie 'untrue.'
Actually a lot of the plot in Boys Don’t Cry misrepresents actual events and details, even leaving several characters out- including another man who was killed along with Brandon and their friend.
That was a bad time, early 90's I believe. I don't know anything about Nebraska but I know small towns it's hard to be LGBTQ openly. He should have come to New Mexico because it's more accepting here even back then. I was living in Santa Fe at the time of his death and most of SF was gay from what I remember. Such a tragedy.

I mean yes indeed this was a horrible murder with Brendon, Philip and Lisa but the fact of the matter is if Brendon Teena was being so brave and was truly being who he was then he should of been upfront with the people he wanted in his life period. +teresa bhopal I have had numerous conversations with michelle, reanna said that brandon wasnt much of a partier that he basically did whatever the crowd was doing. She said he would have a beer or two and smoked cigarettes. She said he would do anything for anyone! We talk about every day things now that I have become friends with them. I also wonder what he would be like now.

I'm so confused about how you made these connections. this was such a tragedy and most of what has been told paints a lot of the survivors in such a negative light that I would think they wouldn't be open to discussing it. I appreciate brandon's story so much. his life was hard & ended terribly but he was brave and obviously had a zest for life. but more than that I feel for his mom & sister & friends.
I do have some questions and maybe you already know the answer to this - is life hard to live normally for lana, michelle, joann, etc? out of respect for them, I've never tried to reach out or contact anyone but I just wonder how many people do & if that becomes overwhelming or interferes with them carrying on with their lives?

+Britt D I made the connections during a time i was seeking any and all info on him. I like you and joe was very intrigued by his life and how brave he was. The ones I made contact with, after building a rapport with them they were very open to talking about it. Everyone connected has went on with their life and done the best they can. His mom is probably the one that has taken it the hardest and thinks of him daily. He has def left a mark on their hearts.

I thought it was going to be Lana talking and I actually lived iN NE my whole life til I was 14 then moved to SD and I know how incredibly closed minded people there are being bi myself and actually got disowned when I moved to Cali in 95 with a Hispanic man, who is the father of my children..so I know how hard this must have been for Brandon but how messed up he lost his life because of it.. This is one reason I left and will never go back
