Nice report. Here in New Zealand, aircraft with fewer than 90 seats are not subject to security screening, by law. Very normal and very unique.

Yes it is standard for Air New Zealand turboprop aircraft that you don't need to go thru security. Jet services only.

100% normal having no security here in planes with max 90 seats.

When flying domestically within NZ, aviation security only applies to domestic jet services only. Domestic turbo prop services are not subject to security checks, as there is a very low risk of any terrorist attack. The other the reason is, there are 11 regional airports like Taupo, Gisborne, Blenheim, Hokitika, Napier, etc, where Air NZ flies too, only allow turbo prop (ATR72 & Q300's ) aircraft and do not have domestic jets services, hence there is no requirement for aviation security facilities, due to the high cost operating aviation security services.

That is very interesting. I like it although it was the first time I had come across such procedures and therefor found it a bit strange. Thanks for explaining it 👍

I you have the opportunity, fly to a regional airport like Hokitika from Christchurch and you will understand why there is no aviation security services, as there 2 flights a day to and from Hokitika, as Hokitika is the only regional airport on the South Island west coast (total popultion of 32,400) that Air NZ flies too. Just another point, locals think domestic regional turboprop flights are already expensive;-)

Yes its normal especially on Air New Zealand domestic flights. In New Zealand we dont go through security checks before departure at the gate as its domestic as its around New Zealand especially short flights. I have never flown to Dunedin on ATR 72 600 but in New Zealand we dont need to go to security only international flights in other countries such as Singapore as they go to security checks before departure . Different airports in different countries have their own rules with planes if travellers go overseas on anywhere . Its nomal but in New Zealand we dont have that domestic and international only when we are ready to go to departure lounge . Only flights that go to Auckland Wellington if you fly airbus A320 then yes security but not small planes as they have less seats than airbus .

I've flown chc-dud soo many times and yep super easy!! I only ever take carry on - no need to check in bags - so I legit do not interact with airport staff at all. It's like getting on a bus!!
