At 80 I guess I can still learn things. I never put a 3inch round in a 2 3/4 gun just because I didn't think I should. Thanks for showing me why. Keep the videos coming I sure look forward to them.
Really old 16 gauge shotguns have 2 9/16 " chambers and newer ones have 2 3/4". Most available shells are for the newer ones.

Great video as always, thank you very much. As a youngster hunting turkey in the early 1980s with several old, family-owned, 12-gauge side-by-sides lacking chamber markings (probably all 2 ¾ as they were manufactured before 1920), I would use 3 inch and sometimes 3.5 shells in these weapons as I thought bigger was certainly better. I never experienced a problem shooting one or two oversized rounds each fall and spring season, and having great success, I never thought a thing about it. Years later and after the advent of the internet, I bought a Charles Daly by Miroku with barrels stamped, “2 ¾ inch shells”. I did a bit of research and would like to offer this tip to those w/o similarly marked shotguns. Using a 3x5 card rolled lengthwise, insert it into the chamber until it slows or sticks. Mark the card with a pencil at the breech, withdraw, measure, subtract ¼ inch or so for the crimp, and there is your weapon’s intended chambering. Thanks again, Paul!

@@vdog4799 Actually, I’m just guessing here, but I think I’m about the same age as Paul. I just turned 57. Now, I’m not in any way trying to say “I’m like Paul Harrell”, but in some ways he does remind me a lot of myself. And since we are a product of our upbringing a lot of the times, things that Paul says reminds me of things I would say. And I get that stuff from my dad.

Dang, I wanted to see Paul try to put the fired 3 inch hull in the 2 3/4 inch chamber, I am pretty sure this is the first time I have seen Paul overlook an opportunity to reinforce a lesson.
No risk of injury when inserting an already fired shell.

Learned this lesson the hard way when i discovered that .22s .22L and .22LR were all different cartridges. I figured a .22 is a .22. Granted i was 14 or so at the time, but i was still stupid. Loaded my fathers favorite .22s (a semi auto of some flavor) with .22LR, and went out to shoot at squirrels.
A couple of malfunction, and some unintended automatic fire, the rifle jammed and i was unable to clear it. Had to go home, and tell my dad "i broke your .22." He broke it down and hammered the bent .22LR out. He laughed and told me "you put the wrong ammo in, check it first."
I never forgot that lesson. In fact, every .22 i own now will accept all 3, just because of this screw up.

Welcome to the club. Im up to 5, cause my 870 needed a 20 gauge sxs brother, which needed an over under 12 ga friend, which then asked for a trap gun girlfriend and then i needed an auto loader so no shenanigans would happen between them all.

I have a box of really nice turkey shells that I have absolutely no use for because I didn't check the box carefully enough, and I don't own a shotgun that will even take a barrel with a 3.5" chamber. At least it was before THE EVENT and they weren't painfully expensive.

Since I don't own or shoot any firearms, I always assume the shell length was the length of the shell before it was fired. I can see how new shotgun owners could be confused about the shell lengths. I knew about the shell expansion before because I have found used shells.
Just to blow your mind there's also this not entirely uncommon (in Europe) older chambering called "2 1/2 English" which is not a good thing to put 2 3/4 shells in for exactly the same reasoning.
And remember that not all shells are crimped equally. Depending on brand and type of loading (full power buckshot vs ultra low recoil trap loads) there can be quite a bit of variation. My Mossberg takes 5 2 3/4" shells in the tube, so long as they are Federal, Winchester or Remington; some imported shells, it holds four. The imports are 3/16ths longer crimped. Fired, they're all the same size.
You have never seen a picture of a crimped end of a shot shell?
Another little word of wisdom? Fire always what your gun was designed for. Always read the owner's manuals.
You know? A Firearm stamped with .223 Rem you should not fire 5.56 Nato rounds through it. You can fire .223 Rem safely out of a Firearm designed for 5.56 Nato though.
In the case of shotguns though. You are creating too much chamber pressures firing a 3 inch out of a 2 3/4 inch camber. I mean you already have a choke at the end of the barrel totally designed for the desired pattern of the shot after it already starts spreading. All guns are pressure tested or should be before they ever end up on a store rack.
Yeah Nato rounds and even more confusing is pistol rounds. +P and +P+ you really need to do research and always read your owner's manual that comes with the Firearm. And never ever fire a Firearm out of the box. Always clean it first and work the action a quite a bit. Buy some dummy rounds or use empty casings to make sure it works as it should. What else you got to do watching TV?
The problem with things like 2 1/2" English guns is that they are way past being associated with the manual, and the ones I've seen aren't marked as such. You gotta get out the micrometer and check. When in doubt, I always consult a real gunsmith. @@daveweed2765

Yep - Likewise. And the same reason my ARs all have 5.56 barrels. "Having a 3 inch 12 gauge means never having to care if it's a 2-3/4 or 3 incher you're stuffing into it, same as having a 5.56 barrel means never having to care if it's .223 or 5.56 in the mag.

Perhaps Federal, Winchester, or Remington could test the pressures when a 3 inch was fired in one of their 2 3/4 inch test barrels. In addition to tearing the shell case apart I'd bet the pressures would be exorbitantly high.

I didn't know that this was an issue, that is people not knowing the interchangeability. I just never thought about exactly why it wasn't safe. My basic rule is only use the ammo size(s) stamped on the barrel and you'll be safe.

Excellent. I never knew this, it never occurred to me to try a 3" magnum round in a 2 3/4" chambered gun. Then again except for an old 12 ga. double I got from my grandfather I've never owned a 2 3/4" shotgun and I had no intention of ever putting a magnum load in my grandfather's old shotgun.

I had at one time a beautiful Remington Wingmaster in 3" Magnum with a 30" full choke barrel. The instructions with the shotgun specifically stated not to use 2&3/4" shotgun ammunition. I have never understood why and used some 2&3/4" 00 buckshot shells without a problem. Now I understand why. Thank you for solving such an old question for me! No, you should not shoot 2&3/4" in a 3" chamber either...think about it. 1/4" before you get to the actual start of the barrel and how much pressure is lost and the fact that the charge could get a little wonky before it has a chance to stabilize. So now I know why Remington advised against it.

Awesome Paul, I might be able to make it to Missouri gun show ! edit, now to look up where in Missouri that town is.
A few years ago, a friend came to me with a .410 that he was having trouble with. He said sometimes when he fired it, the end of the shell would get ripped off and he wasn’t sure why. So I took it home and discovered that it had a 2 1/2 inch chamber and he was shooting 3 inch magnums in it. As a tool and die maker, and the owner of a very similar single shot .410 shotgun, I had just recently made a chamber reamer to lengthen the chamber to 3 inch, so I lengthened his chamber, and he was happy as a pig in….slop! Chamber length DOES matter!!!!

I was behind a guy at the Sporting Goods store, that was rudely and aggressively asking for some " bullets" for his shotgun. The store employee asked him what " shells" the he was specifically interested in. He didn't even know what gauge that he needed, whether or not he needed birdshot, buckshot, slugs, etc. Again he yelled at the employee "Just give me the biggest available ". I spent an hour with the guy to give him a basic education.
You're more patient than I am. I would have handed him anything 2-3/4". He wouldn't know the difference anyway.

I was on a store when a fellow walked up wanting a magazine for his pistol, he had no idea the make model or caliber. Nor did he have the firearm with him, but he expected the guy behind the counter to provide him with a mag😂

My (occasionally) dumbass dad used to shoot 3" magnum 00 buck through a pre-WW2 WINCHESTER MODEL 12, 2¾", full choke. The 3" shell always had shredded ends, & eventually the barrel split at the choke constriction.

Would 3" slugs be more accurate than 2 3/4" slugs because there is less travel down the forcing cone 🤔
They are for sure when shooting sabot slugs in my experience, but I've never tested with shot
Probably, but the only way to be sure is to test your shotgun and ammunition.

Ran across this situation a few years ago when I went trap shooting with a friend. I provided the shotguns but he had to bring his own ammo. He brought 3" when the Remington 870 only fit 2 3/4". It failed to eject after his first shot which indicated something wasn't right and I discovered the error. The shotgun sometimes jams during pumping now, but I'm grateful he didn't blow his arm off (unlikely and dramatic, but those were my thoughts at the time).
This was a great lesson to me to be very thorough in outings with new or unfamiliar shooters.

I learned this lesson 50 years ago when I inherited my grandfather's Winchester model 12.
It has 21/2" chambers.
