Kai replied to comments on his Fb that Marko is irreplaceable so they are going to continue with a new concept. He also said that they came close to quitting but decided not to give up because they are not done yet. They are all so talented and creative so I'm curious to see what the new concept entails.
He is undoubtedly brilliant and a star is his own right, and deservedly so. It does seem though, in all of the performances I've seen, that the band is there for him. I think he would be better to stay as he is, a brilliant solo artist. But a "team player" who would fit in well with Nightwish? I don't think so. All current members of Nightwish have much in common but above all, huge talent without the huge ego, not sure Jarkko could be anything other than the main attraction.
Jarko is an amazing singer and play both guitars and bass, so is an intriguing suggestion. He is not a Marko clone, very different voice, but they never searched clones, they always moved on, trying new things every time they changed a member, so why not? Also curious if on the future Troy will have more sing time. Marko will be missed a lot but the future could be very interesting. We have only to wait and see what comes.
You should check Deep Purple cover "Highway Star" from Jarkko. He is playing bass also there, but the singing is really amazing. It sounds really effortless, when he gets the high notes of young Ian Gillan...

Rumors? Fans are just putting his name out there themself. These are not rumors. For this to work out Jarkko has to cancel his entire upcoming tour for example. His tour starts exactly, when Nightwish's is suppose to start, so that's not good.

Hi Jim, J. Ahola was the a bassist vocalist for many years with his band Teräsbetoni , here you can see them in action in 2008. We were so impressed ( my husband is a musician) that I wrote to him and he replied and we started writing and chatting and we created 2 fan pages to share him with the world. We are in Tasmania. He could definitely fit the bill but the big question would be whether he would be fine with not being lead vocal on 90% of the songs? Marko is very rare in that he's an incredibly talented vocalist that doesn't mind taking a back seat, I think that's going to be harder to find than any other quality imo.
Interesting performance. I'm guessing you have to be very careful with your singing dynamics in such an acoustic setting, use loudness sparingly to not oversaturate the experience with constant reverbations, but to make them count. He seems to be not only in very good control of his voice, but very aware of the setting he's singing in.
To get better understanding how Jarkko Ahola operates as a leading vocalist/bassist, check out his former (finnish language) metal band Teräsbetoni. Above song did not fare as well as the 2006 Eurovision winning Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah", but all in it's cheesyness (lyrics wise) it was a solid metal tune. Just like we always say to NW newcomers about Floor, this was just the tip of the assberg, (as the Finnish stand-up guy Ismo Leikola would say), of what Jarkko can do. Teräsbetoni gives a better idea of Jarkko, as a heavy vocalist. He also surprised the boss lady of the Finnish National Opera singing "Nessun Dorma" in a TV-format "Tähdet, tähdet", "Stars, Stars". A bunch of known vocalists having to sing with different styles, from heavy, to pop, to disco, to opera. But Marko is Marko.
Jarkko's name is right next in line when talking about singing bass players. He has stunning voice and you didn't hear about a half of his real power in this one though :D
I really don't want to predict anything. I just know that whatever they'll do, it's propably going to be cool. 😊 At least I'm hoping. 😅 Marko will be missed, I will miss him, but Nightwish is more than a single player or singer, we have seen that already a few times. This particular combo would be interesting to see, but whether Jarkko is willing to join in a band after going solo for so long, especially a band that already has a solid thing of their own going on, I don't know.. It could end up with an artistic clash - OR a very fruitful collaboration, who knows...

I've always felt that nightwish had two main singers instead of floor being the main and marco being number 2. But how that would go with Jarkko (should that happpen), would be completely up to the band. They could give him more to sing than what marco did.

To be honest, I haven´t been so keen on Nightwish lately, a bit too cinematic for me nowadays. Wishmaster, Century Child and Once are my favorites. After Once, I got distracted a bit, I adore Floor, though and enjoy listening/watching certain songs from the later era, but albums as a whole, not so much.

Well, based on this song I don't see Jarkko as a member of Nightwish. From other comments, it seems he needs to the a lead vocalist in his own band where he can run the show. Just my opinion. As Nightwish has said, the next tour will be with a staff bassist then, IMO, either Marko returns or the band retires. Not a fit. He could reach most of Floors notes, and that with more volume or power if you will. And he does it with clear note. It would not contrast. Also Jarkko is a seasoned frontman / solo artist and I see no reason for him to join Nightwish as his primary group because he will not have the same challenges and possibility to use all his vocal abilities. Someone mentioned Jarkko be a good fit for Queen, I totally agree that would be a better fit he does fantastik Queen Songs, and he can truly master those challenging songs.
Jarkko also has a great voice. They are both tenors, I can't find any reliable info on their vocal range. As of right now Markko hasn't killed himself on any high notes as far as I can tell. This is a stupid way of saying something that my second language english doesn't allow me; in my opinion Marko's voice has more "personality" and I don't mean grit or rasp, just clean vocals. He's also a chameleon, theatrical if you will. I think that it's essential for Nightwish and especially in the Floor-era. It would be disappointing if they end up with a singer that can't match Floor. That would not happen with Jarkko.
Well said. I am not sure but I would say Marco is baritone i.e. sings low notes with ease but has powerful high notes as well. Jarkko is a tenor no doubt and his upper register is really powerful. Technically speaking Jarkko probably can sing anything that Marko does but on those softer songs Marcos ability to add feeling and colour is unmatched. The Islander would not be the same although not bad sang by Jarkko.
Jarkko Ahola is definitely a capable metal singer/bassist. He shares some vocal attributes with Marko (powerfull rock voice with strong vibrato) but has (IMO) bit less expansive and less rich "colour palette" in his vocal range/use/tone than Marko. On stage, Jarkko stands well on his own, tho not quite in the same ball park on natural presence/aura as veteran Hietala, IMO. So, Jarkko vs Marko = slightly different beasts in close proximity. All in all, Jarkko could be suitable candidate for Nightwish. He's voice might not gel aswell with Floor as it does with Marko, but there is definitely synergy and compatibility possibilities to be explored/found. We shall see.

I can see he got a vocal, but im a bit unsure if he can do Marko´s angry voice, in some NW songs Marko is this part, and Floor the beauty right, and yes its only a rumour, so this is far from a official thing yet, i could however see Tuomas and NW, get Jarkko somewhat more NW, and he would add something not seen from Jarkko yet to, it would never be a Marko duplicate, but that dosent mean it could not be good, just in a new way, but yes lets see who is really gonna be Marko´s replacement, and there is also the opertunity that Marko actually return to the band again, after taking a longer break, and i do think Marko will return to perform again, im a bit more unsure, if its gonna be with NW, or he do some solo stuff then..
Jarkko can pretty much do anything Marco does vocally, and he is the first man that comes to my mind about replacing Marco, but of course it's a different voice. He is an amazing singer, but I assume would come second on playing bass, even though he is a bassist. The main problem is that Jarkko doesent like to do many shows, and seems to enjoy being his own boss..this is why I don't think nw has concidered him, and vise versa.
My thoughts will not be original but based on knowledge of some circumstances: 1. That Marko just can't replaceable! 2. That NW can find a simple good bassist who only play bass, because anyway 99% front woman is Floor, but back vocal can do also Troy; 3. Jarkko is a bright individual personality as a soloist, performing artist and author; 4. as follows - Jarkko will never be soloist No. 2 or bassist - back vocalist, because his career has developed as a lead soloist, which means that it will be impossible for the two "leads" singers on stage to cooperate. 5. Jarkko can only replace both - Marco's bass and Floor as a front Man, but it won't be never ! 6. Jarkko can only be the lead soloist - front man, but that means if even he would be accepted by NW, then the band has to change a whole their concept that will never happen! 7. Maybe only what can happen, possible as miracle - Floor along to singing needs to learn bass play... ;))) p.s. of course the wishes of some Jarkko's fans are understandable, but do not correspond to the objective circumstances and knowledge of the situation ;) So likely point 2 is more possible to happen ... ;))
The only problem I see here is that Jarkko already has some big shoes... Jarkko is a seriously good singer. Might put Floor to a shadow. I don't know if they would want that.
Jarkko did five years ago Gary Moore's Over the hills - which Nightwish has also covered long ago - with full Vantaa Symphony Orchestra, Perttu Kivilaakso from Apocalyptica playing cello and Laura Voutilainen dueting that with him. Wonderful concert, many other heavy classics performed. Interaction between Jarkko and Laura just perfect. I agree with you Jim that it is sad that we will not see with Marco for foreseeable future, but I would rather have him away from the public eye and be happy than in the band and un happy. If it is better for his health to step back from the band I support him 100%. I think he has a great voice and he has the right amount of hair no viking beard though. Marko is unreplaceable. So was Jukka even if Kai is a monster. But as the band has decided to keep going, someone will come in on bass and vocals. Or two new dudes. We shall see. Great but not great enough. I think Toumas will change future music to suit and support the new member, who ever that is and also create a new take of Nighwish that we will all appreciate. He's definitely has the talent... but something in the back of my head wonders if Jarkko's apparent religious beliefs (I'm guessing here, since it was in a church), versus Tuomas' renown and devout atheism could present some ideological tension. We know Nightwish is more than just music. Tuomas' compositions also express deep philosophical ideology that some religious folk might have trouble dealing with. I don't mean to sell either short or accuse them of being narrow minded, but the thought popped into my head, so here I am typing it out. Don't BBQ me. Hehehe.
Hmm, he made it to news during one church performance last yr when he (accidentally) cursed when introducing the next song. Will not comment re any religious aspects otherwise as that I believe is a personal matter. Jarkko has long history of doing ever sold out Christmas Church Concert tours, as he is much loved for his Christmas performances. I think Finland may be one of the few countries where metalheads are welcomed to sing at the church, performances that are definitely nonreligious.
Jarkko as a singer is 100 times better than Marco..its just a fact...not saying i wont miss Marco...i just doubt Jarkko would want to do it...he is doing fine without Nightwish

I dont know. That would mean huge changes for 3 bands. Nightwish (obviously), Northern Kings would likely lose 2 bassists/songwriters/vocalists (Marko & Jarkko) + Jarkko is also a songwriters, base player & vocalist with Teräsbetoni. If Marko & Jarkko were just base players, it wouldn't be as big of an issue replacing them, but when they are both also songwriters AND vocalists. Thats a lot to replace, for all 3 bands.
The fact that Marko was in Nightwish AND Northern Kings means that Jarkko won't have to quit that. Beside that Marko was also a member of Tarot, so there should be room for a second (third) band like Teräsbetoni. The question is more that Jarkko always been the frontman, but one can hope..
@@impugnu7852 As I said, Northern Kings had TWO bassists/songwriters/vocalists in Marko AND Jarkko. With Marko gone, Jarkko will have double the work load in Northern Kings, as well as Teräsbetoni. Then asking him to learn the Nightwish back catalogue, as well as assist in writing the new album & tour planning/rehearsals?. As a base player, no problem. But as a bassist, songwriters & vocalists? Something will have to give.
This is not even the best video to showcase his skills. I mean, I'm not sure if his bass playing skills are on par with Marco's but he's still the only one I can think of who could be at least a temporary replacement.
Jarkko seems very much like a star, that is a quality Tuomas do not like in his band- he wants everyone meld together, especially in their latest album. Jarkko is great but not the right type as far as I can see.
In my mind NO ONE will fill Marko's shoes, only take his place in the band which may lead to slight changes to Tuomas's compositions and arrangements. He can sing but in some performances with Northern Kings I've seen him trying to draw atenttion to him. I don't know if this guy would be able to be another member of the band without being the lead vocalist. In this video, jp leppätuolo is on the front and Jarkko is constantly doing something to the camera while the rest (Marko and Tonny Kakko) are enjoying performing being backing vocalists. Then he should be better than Marko, because Floor and Marko where a absolute perfect - equally powered and fully synchronized fit. What is see here is a good singer, but certainly not on Marko's level. But that's just my opinion and feel.

Also do check out Big brain singer analysing Jarkko's Walking in the air - he is an opera singer and knows his stuff. He is a very good singer, but it will be a wrong chemistry with Floor, he is also a lead vocalist, and theire is not mutch grows and metal in his voice, so i dont see any chemistry with Floor's voice.

He IS a great classical singer who can belt out some high azz notes but he is NOT for Nightwish. His voice will not compliment Floors like Markos heavy rock voice does. Continue the search!
Listen "show must go on" from both Jarkko Ahola and Antti Railio. Antti must be the filling singer.. Jarkko has old granny's vibrato. please take with some humour, but still Antti could be great and versatile guy..

Kai replied to comments on his Fb that Marko is irreplaceable so they are going to continue with a new concept. He also said that they came close to quitting but decided not to give up because they are not done yet.
They are all so talented and creative so I'm curious to see what the new concept entails.

I don’t expect him to be the pick, but it makes for fun speculation. He’s a great talent.
He is undoubtedly brilliant and a star is his own right, and deservedly so. It does seem though, in all of the performances I've seen, that the band is there for him. I think he would be better to stay as he is, a brilliant solo artist. But a "team player" who would fit in well with Nightwish? I don't think so. All current members of Nightwish have much in common but above all, huge talent without the huge ego, not sure Jarkko could be anything other than the main attraction.

Jarko is an amazing singer and play both guitars and bass, so is an intriguing suggestion. He is not a Marko clone, very different voice, but they never searched clones, they always moved on, trying new things every time they changed a member, so why not?

You should check Deep Purple cover "Highway Star" from Jarkko. He is playing bass also there, but the singing is really amazing. It sounds really effortless, when he gets the high notes of young Ian Gillan...

Marko is very rare in that he's an incredibly talented vocalist that doesn't mind taking a back seat, I think that's going to be harder to find than any other quality imo.

Interesting performance. I'm guessing you have to be very careful with your singing dynamics in such an acoustic setting, use loudness sparingly to not oversaturate the experience with constant reverbations, but to make them count. He seems to be not only in very good control of his voice, but very aware of the setting he's singing in.

Just like we always say to NW newcomers about Floor, this was just the tip of the assberg, (as the Finnish stand-up guy Ismo Leikola would say), of what Jarkko can do. Teräsbetoni gives a better idea of Jarkko, as a heavy vocalist. He also surprised the boss lady of the Finnish National Opera singing "Nessun Dorma" in a TV-format "Tähdet, tähdet", "Stars, Stars". A bunch of known vocalists having to sing with different styles, from heavy, to pop, to disco, to opera.
But Marko is Marko.

I just know that whatever they'll do, it's propably going to be cool. 😊 At least I'm hoping. 😅 Marko will be missed, I will miss him, but Nightwish is more than a single player or singer, we have seen that already a few times. This particular combo would be interesting to see, but whether Jarkko is willing to join in a band after going solo for so long, especially a band that already has a solid thing of their own going on, I don't know.. It could end up with an artistic clash - OR a very fruitful collaboration, who knows...

I've always felt that nightwish had two main singers instead of floor being the main and marco being number 2.
But how that would go with Jarkko (should that happpen), would be completely up to the band. They could give him more to sing than what marco did.

To be honest, I haven´t been so keen on Nightwish lately, a bit too cinematic for me nowadays. Wishmaster, Century Child and Once are my favorites. After Once, I got distracted a bit, I adore Floor, though and enjoy listening/watching certain songs from the later era, but albums as a whole, not so much.

Well, based on this song I don't see Jarkko as a member of Nightwish. From other comments, it seems he needs to the a lead vocalist in his own band where he can run the show. Just my opinion. As Nightwish has said, the next tour will be with a staff bassist then, IMO, either Marko returns or the band retires. Marko is just as much an integral part of Nightwish as Floor and Tuomas has said that, if Floor leaves, the band will not go on.

Not a fit. He could reach most of Floors notes, and that with more volume or power if you will. And he does it with clear note. It would not contrast. Also Jarkko is a seasoned frontman / solo artist and I see no reason for him to join Nightwish as his primary group because he will not have the same challenges and possibility to use all his vocal abilities.
Someone mentioned Jarkko be a good fit for Queen, I totally agree that would be a better fit he does fantastik Queen Songs, and he can truly master those challenging songs.
I would say there's no way they'll ever replace Marko, but I said the same thing about Tarja. And then Floor came along.

Jarkko also has a great voice. They are both tenors, I can't find any reliable info on their vocal range. As of right now Markko hasn't killed himself on any high notes as far as I can tell. This is a stupid way of saying something that my second language english doesn't allow me; in my opinion Marko's voice has more "personality" and I don't mean grit or rasp, just clean vocals. He's also a chameleon, theatrical if you will. I think that it's essential for Nightwish and especially in the Floor-era. It would be disappointing if they end up with a singer that can't match Floor. That would not happen with Jarkko.
Well said. I am not sure but I would say Marco is baritone i.e. sings low notes with ease but has powerful high notes as well. Jarkko is a tenor no doubt and his upper register is really powerful. Technically speaking Jarkko probably can sing anything that Marko does but on those softer songs Marcos ability to add feeling and colour is unmatched. The Islander would not be the same although not bad sang by Jarkko.
I feel Troy might do justice with The Islander
Jarkko Ahola is definitely a capable metal singer/bassist. He shares some vocal attributes with Marko (powerfull rock voice with strong vibrato) but has (IMO) bit less expansive and less rich "colour palette" in his vocal range/use/tone than Marko. On stage, Jarkko stands well on his own, tho not quite in the same ball park on natural presence/aura as veteran Hietala, IMO. So, Jarkko vs Marko = slightly different beasts in close proximity.
All in all, Jarkko could be suitable candidate for Nightwish. He's voice might not gel aswell with Floor as it does with Marko, but there is definitely synergy and compatibility possibilities to be explored/found. We shall see.

I can see he got a vocal, but im a bit unsure if he can do Marko´s angry voice, in some NW songs Marko is this part, and Floor the beauty right, and yes its only a rumour, so this is far from a official thing yet, i could however see Tuomas and NW, get Jarkko somewhat more NW, and he would add something not seen from Jarkko yet to, it would never be a Marko duplicate, but that dosent mean it could not be good, just in a new way, but yes lets see who is really gonna be Marko´s replacement, and there is also the opertunity that Marko actually return to the band again, after taking a longer break, and i do think Marko will return to perform again, im a bit more unsure, if its gonna be with NW, or he do some solo stuff then..
Jarkko can pretty much do anything Marco does vocally, and he is the first man that comes to my mind about replacing Marco, but of course it's a different voice. He is an amazing singer, but I assume would come second on playing bass, even though he is a bassist. The main problem is that Jarkko doesent like to do many shows, and seems to enjoy being his own boss..this is why I don't think nw has concidered him, and vise versa.
My thoughts will not be original but based on knowledge of some circumstances:
1. That Marko just can't replaceable!
2. That NW can find a simple good bassist who only play bass, because anyway 99% front woman is Floor, but back vocal can do also Troy;
3. Jarkko is a bright individual personality as a soloist, performing artist and author;
4. as follows - Jarkko will never be soloist No. 2 or bassist - back vocalist, because his career has developed as a lead soloist, which means that it will be impossible for the two "leads" singers on stage to cooperate.
5. Jarkko can only replace both - Marco's bass and Floor as a front Man, but it won't be never !
6. Jarkko can only be the lead soloist - front man, but that means if even he would be accepted by NW, then the band has to change a whole their concept that will never happen!
7. Maybe only what can happen, possible as miracle - Floor along to singing needs to learn bass play... ;)))
p.s. of course the wishes of some Jarkko's fans are understandable, but do not correspond to the objective circumstances and knowledge of the situation ;)

Jarkko did five years ago Gary Moore's Over the hills - which Nightwish has also covered long ago - with full Vantaa Symphony Orchestra, Perttu Kivilaakso from Apocalyptica playing cello and Laura Voutilainen dueting that with him. Wonderful concert, many other heavy classics performed. Interaction between Jarkko and Laura just perfect. I agree with you Jim that it is sad that we will not see with Marco for foreseeable future, but I would rather have him away from the public eye and be happy than in the band and un happy. If it is better for his health to step back from the band I support him 100%.

I got into Nightwish from Ocean Borne. A special album 💿 Nightwish is falling apart, the saddest thing to see.
Marko is unreplaceable. So was Jukka even if Kai is a monster. But as the band has decided to keep going, someone will come in on bass and vocals. Or two new dudes. We shall see. If the band made a great pick, we will know. Jarko Ahola is badass and while he's not Marko, he's great on his own merits. Let's stay tuned.

Great but not great enough. I think Toumas will change future music to suit and support the new member, who ever that is and also create a new take of Nighwish that we will all appreciate. He's definitely has the talent... but something in the back of my head wonders if Jarkko's apparent religious beliefs (I'm guessing here, since it was in a church), versus Tuomas' renown and devout atheism could present some ideological tension. We know Nightwish is more than just music. Tuomas' compositions also express deep philosophical ideology that some religious folk might have trouble dealing with. I don't mean to sell either short or accuse them of being narrow minded, but the thought popped into my head, so here I am typing it out. Don't BBQ me. Hehehe.
Hmm, he made it to news during one church performance last yr when he (accidentally) cursed when introducing the next song. Will not comment re any religious aspects otherwise as that I believe is a personal matter. Jarkko has long history of doing ever sold out Christmas Church Concert tours, as he is much loved for his Christmas performances. I think Finland may be one of the few countries where metalheads are welcomed to sing at the church, performances that are definitely nonreligious.
Jarkko as a singer is 100 times better than Marco..its just a fact...not saying i wont miss Marco...i just doubt Jarkko would want to do it...he is doing fine without Nightwish

I dont know. That would mean huge changes for 3 bands. Nightwish (obviously), Northern Kings would likely lose 2 bassists/songwriters/vocalists (Marko & Jarkko) + Jarkko is also a songwriters, base player & vocalist with Teräsbetoni. If Marko & Jarkko were just base players, it wouldn't be as big of an issue replacing them, but when they are both also songwriters AND vocalists. Thats a lot to replace, for all 3 bands.
The fact that Marko was in Nightwish AND Northern Kings means that Jarkko won't have to quit that. Beside that Marko was also a member of Tarot, so there should be room for a second (third) band like Teräsbetoni. The question is more that Jarkko always been the frontman, but one can hope..
@@impugnu7852 As I said, Northern Kings had TWO bassists/songwriters/vocalists in Marko AND Jarkko. With Marko gone, Jarkko will have double the work load in Northern Kings, as well as Teräsbetoni. Then asking him to learn the Nightwish back catalogue, as well as assist in writing the new album & tour planning/rehearsals?. As a base player, no problem. But as a bassist, songwriters & vocalists? Something will have to give.
Are Teräsbetoni and Northern Kings even active? These projects looks like they are done. So, plenty of time.

Jarkko seems very much like a star, that is a quality Tuomas do not like in his band- he wants everyone meld together, especially in their latest album. Jarkko is great but not the right type as far as I can see.

He can sing but in some performances with Northern Kings I've seen him trying to draw atenttion to him. I don't know if this guy would be able to be another member of the band without being the lead vocalist. In this video, jp leppätuolo is on the front and Jarkko is constantly doing something to the camera while the rest (Marko and Tonny Kakko) are enjoying performing being backing vocalists. I just came up with a wild guess. The bassist replacing Marko is going to be a woman.

He is a very good singer, but it will be a wrong chemistry with Floor, he is also a lead vocalist, and theire is not mutch grows and metal in his voice, so i dont see any chemistry with Floor's voice.
I would love to see Simen Hestnaes replacing Marko ;)
How about ICS Vortex joining Nightwish? He has a good set of pipes.

Jarkko "replaced" Marko in Dreamtale. They literally sang in the same band already.
Jarkko does a maximum of 2 shows per week, preferably one. That would never work with Nightwish.
I've heard that the new bass player is badass, and it is not Jarkko Ahola.
He IS a great classical singer who can belt out some high azz notes but he is NOT for Nightwish. His voice will not compliment Floors like Markos heavy rock voice does. Continue the search!
Listen "show must go on" from both Jarkko Ahola and Antti Railio. Antti must be the filling singer.. Jarkko has old granny's vibrato.
