_Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home_ is another example of "action without violence". A sci-fi caper that takes a cue from _Close Encounters_ in it's intensely action-packed yet bloodless race to communicate with an unknowable alien entity.
Saw this film at the cinema in 1978 nobody had ever seen anything like it just brilliant and blew me away as a 13 year old boy ! Still does now as a 57 year old grandad
Great video. Even though it made a bunch of money, I feel people don’t talk about it enough. It’s one of those films that feel very personal. It’s the same thing with E.T. It’s always fascinated me how much hate he got from the art house community for making that movie. Like it was just worthless, money grabbing garbage. That’s absolutely insane to me, because to this day, E.T. Is one of the only films that’s ever made me cry. There’s this great video of John Cassavetes talking to an interviewer who clearly believed E.T. to be an impersonal, dumb studio movie, and lauded a “serious” film like A Woman Under The Influence. John, being the unpretentious dude he is, supported Spielberg, and understood that regardless of how much money it made, it’s still a film that has something to say.
That's a great story. The presence of Truffaut in Close Encounters is also an interesting example of a director more respected in academic/sophisticated circles championing Spielberg and his work. Truffaut was also allegedly a great supporter of E.T.
at that time, some producers of the film said "Close Encounters of the Third Kind'" was an extremely bizarre title for a movie, they feared it would have epic fail just for that what the hell is "Close Encounters of the Third Kind'" it will confuse the public even more, they argued

That's something wild about watching the Close Encounters climax. As beautiful as the music is, it's arguably only Williams' second best score for the year
Close Encounters is one of the greatest scifi movies, but it's difficult for me to watch. All the stuff with the family and the wife and kids leaving is tough to handle. Also, I'd be curious to see you do a video on The Sugarland Express and/or Duel. I think TSE is one of his most underrated films and has my favorite John Williams score, and Duel is actually my favorite movie of all time and doesn't get nearly as much love as it should.
My music teacher taught me piano/keyboard WITH THIS SCENE when I was an early teen, took me a year to perfect it, It's the piano equivalent of dueling banjos or a power metal dual guitar song from LoveBites or Iron Maiden. I can still play the whole thing perfectly now, which is NOT as easy as you may think. LOVE this movie and still watch the dvd often. And now I have to go watch it again. Lmao. Nice analysis.
Honestly idk why but I was scared of this movie growing up as a kid but I loved other scary Alien movies I it was mostly because in my head I always expected something more

The bizarre domestic stuff and the fact that the father abandons his family at the end while joyous music plays give a weird connotation.
Why? His family sucked.
