  • This Camaro was at 2 different shops over 3 years in an attempt to restore the body and get painted! What will it take to make the panels right?

I have very little body work experience, only on our own in the past. Retired from repairing, teaching, now onto a new area. Loving it. I like the work done while the jack is under tension, it provides a solid platform to move metal elsewhere that does need it. Great idea!
I only wish to make the top 8” of my new tailgate narrower because it is 3/16” too thick, idiots! Sorry, I don’t won’t to make a 7 year oil boy loose his job and cry. Genuine GM authorized stamping, my foot. Oh, 67 C10 tailgate, one side is fat on top of perfect tail light pocket. Cut, move, weld in patch? I am still mad!

Gotta do what you gotta do. Sometimes you cut, sometimes use a BFH and sometimes walk away.

In classes for ACDelco, I used to bring out a ball peen hammer, the size of a body hammer. I said, I use this on Chevy’s, then a 2lb. cross-peen and said this is for Chrysler’s. Then, I grabbed a 12lb. sledge and said, I use this on Fords.
It is not that I dislike Fords, just as a tech in an aftermarket shop, we were working on older 74, 75 and so. Just to do a timing chain (TC&G), but no two bolts the same size or length. I would empty my tool box, this was crazy. Then 3 different ignitions systems, 5 different front suspensions. It became ridiculous! I was the import tech! My first day, they gave me a Honda Civic. The block was bare. I asked “Where are the other parts?” The manager told me, the pistons are in the solvent tanks, rods in this box, cylinder head under this fender cover, I thing it’s done. It took me a week or more. It gave me nightmares!

Thanks, I've been doing this for a long time. It's definitely not easy.. gotta be persistent. A lot of back and forth work off camera.

Nick, this technique is sort of like dating a fat girl, it gets the job done but you wouldn't want your friends to see you!
In all honesty this is an extremely valuable lesson. I have more than my share of OCD and I struggle with doing things the "Right Way" vs. accomplishing them the easy way. You have just saved your customer a ton of money by using artistic license and creative bending, and not compromising the quality level of the job.
This must be hard to put this out for public scrutiny, you know how youtube is, but thanks again for reinforcing a real world technique!

Great to hear from you Mike! Actually, it was quite easy to post this video. Just went up to the top right of the screen and there's this radio button called 'upload video'. hehe! People such as yourself can appreciate the means in which things were done. However, I do hear where you are coming from and I'm sure that at some point I'll get an earful. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. This was a small glimpse into what is possible without cutting everything apart and starting over with yet another set of aftermarket panels(they always have to be massaged to fit right). When a guy comes to you after all hope and a lot of hard earned $$ is gone asking what can be done to save their ride sometimes an out of the box approach needs to be used to make things right. Jack was just tweaking surface angles in a very controlled manner. The pops weren't spot welds breaking(I checked), it was the layer of bondo around the hinges letting go. That will be addressed later. In the next video, if people watch it to the end, the results will speak for themselves. Cheers!

Maybe they used the "if you can't weld good weld a lot" precept. Good information Nick!

I’m about to start my 81 70 conversation because I like the 70 body style better. So right now I’m collecting my parts then I’m going to collect all my tools to start. Then I guess I’m gonna go at the old rusted out 70 for all the good part’s because I’m on a budget. But I’m gonna make it happen. 👍🏻

Cool! You're going about it the right way. One thing I may suggest is try to find something that's not too bad. You'll spend a lot of time and $ with rust repair and that may put a damper on things. Any questions feel free to ask.

So true Andrew! We had to dig deep into the toolbox for this one. There have been a number of times on other projects when we aren't so fortunate and have had to put things in reverse... cutting apart just about everything that was done by others to start fresh because things were so bad. It hurts! Plain and simple. Not only for me but for the client. As we move forward they are kept in the loop every step of the way through visits and photos. Nothing is buried or hidden from them.
