Why a South African MMA Fighter Chose Kun Khmer Over Muay Thai!

- Kun Khmer is a traditional form of kickboxing that evolved from early forms of Khmer fighting techniques. It was developed by the Angkorian armies to defend the Khmer Empire from invaders. Kun Khmer uses various techniques, such as elbows, knees, feet, and hands, that are based on animal movements. Kun Khmer is not only a physical art, but also a mental discipline that teaches respect for nature, society, and peace.
Kun Khmer is a national sport in Cambodia and has many tournaments across the country every week. It is also popular on TV and attracts many spectators and people who loves kickboxing both Cambodian and foreigners. Some foreigners have learned and appreciated its value and history. One of them is Emmanuel Onyedikachi, a South African MMA fighter who has lived in Cambodia for more than 10 years. He started practicing Kun Khmer with Chan Ratana in 2008 and has since represented Cambodia and Kun Khmer in many domestic and international competitions.
In a recent interview with the media on April 20, 2023, South African MMA fighter Emmanuel Onyedikachi stated that he had lived in Cambodia for more than 10 years and was fascinated by “Kun Khmer” since then.
Emmanuel Onyedikachi or Manu Selpak described: “I have been practicing Kun Khmer with Chan Ratana since 2008. I have been practicing for 8 months and I wanted to compete. Then I asked to fight abroad and I fought for Cambodia and Kun Khmer since then. In this competition representing Kun Khmer and Cambodia, Manu claims that he fights with love from the heart because Kun Khmer has something special that makes him interested.”
The 37-year-old continued: “For boxing, I like global boxing and MMA cage, but I love Kun Khmer more because Kun Khmer use a lot of tactics, such as using elbows, knees and feet and do not use much force, but use the brain.”
Emmanuel Onyedikachi said: “I used to fight Thai boxers and foreigners who learned Muay Thai a few times. I thought they learned Kun Khmer, they copied from Cambodia. Their fight techniques are the same, they changed its name to Muay Thai, because Muay Thai Federation likes to do business. In conclusion, their original moves are from Cambodia.”
Onyedikachi has a record of 57 fights, 50 wins and seven losses. His most recent victory was against Russia’s DARA by knockout in the third round in the 88kg category. He hopes to continue promoting Kun Khmer and Cambodian culture to the world through his skills and passion.

It’s not surprising that the Thais copied Khmer martial arts and changed their martial art that they have learned from the Khmer to Muy Thai since the Thais love to attribute and name everything after themselves. For example: Asian egg plant is renamed “Thai Egg plant” by the Thais. Spicy Asian hot pepper is named “Thai pepper” after themselves. Basil, an aromatic mint native to all of south Asia is named “Thai basil” by the Thais. An aromatic rice that is grown all over south Asia is given the name “Thai rice” by none other than the Thais themselves! The list of things that the Thais named after themselves are nearly endless. Even the country in which the Thai people called their own was a piece of land that the Thais took from a weakened Khmer Empire and renamed it “Thailand” to trick people into believing it was their own land from the beginning, which it isn’t. The kings of Siam (Thailand’s original name) used to hire many Khmer martial artists to train their army. That was how the Thais learned Khmer martial arts. Even the writing that the Thais used was copied from the Khmers as the Thais did not have their own system of writing until they adopted Khmer writing. The Khmers were the original people that lived in present-day Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and south Vietnam. The Thais migrated to their present-day location from China about 700-800 years ago. They conquered large swathes of land that was part of the Khmer Empire during a time when the empire was weakened by in-fighting, corruptions, and invasions by the Thais and the Vietnamese. Interesting fact: The Thais and the Laotians are related to one another as they speak the same language and basically shared the same cultures. Thailand and Laos used to be one country called “Siam.” The Thais lost Laos to the French who threatened to conquer both countries if the Thais wouldn’t give up Laos to the French. Thailand is the only country in southeast Asia that has never been colonized by the Europeans or the Americans, which is the reason why it has gained so much strength and power over other southeastern Asian countries. There are still many Thai people that are living in China today and they are called the Dais.

Kun Khmer is just a copy of Muaythai. It was invented like some 10 years ago inspired by Ong Bak. The bas-relief at Angkor wat (Hindu temple) is Indian martial art not Kun Khmer. Thailand ruled Cambodia for almost 500 years. That's why they don't have their own culture and the ancient Khmers were slaves (of Tamil-Indian families) according to Zhou Daguan who visited Cambodia in 1296 during Angkor era.
