This is a no brainer. The 35 mm f2 is magical with the only flaw being a little soft when you’re shooting too close to its minimal focusing distance. Other than that, you can’t go wrong. The only thing I would be worried about is dropping my camera with this lens on it. It seems it will not live to see another day after a single drop. But I might be wrong of course. :D

Fuji need to do more of this. Sometimes a cheaper, plastic (lighter) lens is all you need. They need to start offering XF optics in cheaper, lighter bodies. I picked up the XC 35 f2 yesterday based on this video. I really wished Fuji would release a full cheap primes lens lineup by adding XC 23 f2 and XC 50 f2, with the same state of mind (same optical formula, same AF, metal traded for plastic and no weather sealing, lack of focus ring, all for way cheaper) that would make the Fuji system a VERY good system to begin with, with a full set of primes cause for a beginner, 400$ is still a bit expensive for a lens. 200 tho, that's much more appealing to get with someting like an X-T20/30 or E-E4, that kind of stuff. WR lenses makes sense only on WR bodies like the X-T3, otherwise you only pay for metal build and aperture ring. (Although I gotta say I have a bad feeling about this XC line of prime lenses : if they give same optical quality as the XF models for half the price, that would kill the sales for the XF models, and those 35 and 23 F2 lenses are generally your first lens you buy after the kit lens. That would mean a big loss of money in the end, I doubt that the XF is twice as expensive to make as the XC since the glass and autofocus are the same. I mean this lens is about a year and a half old, and I couldn't find it anywhere online in France, had to get into a physical store and they only had one left in stock, that was the model used for exposition.)

I'm very sure you'll be able to buy both in a kit with the XC lens valued at $100 on top of the body MSRP or a big kit with two XC zooms and the XC prime. It'll be great value, and the optical properties of all XC lenses are great if you're ok with the front-dial aperture setting and have plenty of light available. You can also find the XF27 for around $150 pretty easily these days, great "normal" focal length for walking around and taking pics of friends, flowers, trees, you know, the good life!
Hi Chris, thanks so much for the review. My experience with this lens is that is has a huge focus breathing when shooting video. You guys usually do a video review as well but I guess not for this lens. Question, would focus breathing be still present with the XF lens? I am not shooting movement on the street. I wanted to use it for video tutorial with a setup on a table, but found the lens constantly breathing. Too bad, because it’s is great for photo, but not for video. Maybe for street photography it’s not as noticeable. Thanks
2 months ago, I purchased the Fujixt30 and chose the 35mm f2 instead of the 18-55mm kit lens. I paid quite a bit more than I could afford but I loved the combo. Unfortunately, or should I now say fortunately, there was something wrong with the xt30 and I sent both items back. I haven't replaced them yet and I am so so very glad I didn't!
I sincerely hope Fuji keep producing these. I don't much trust cheap zooms as they're quite complicated and I'd rather pay extra for ruggedness. I'd stock up on a few plastic primes though.

I'm a Sony not a Fuji shooter but this move is a very good one by Fuji. Decent priced great optics. Every system should have a dirt cheap 'nifty fifty'. I would consider fuji if I wasn't invested in e mount lenses.
Wow, a lot of fans of the 18. I recently picked it up used to pair with the 27 to walk around with a T30 body. So fun and compact as a system while waiting for the X100V.
what about the differences in changing the focus point, during recording the movie? I expect some differences there... I own XC and for pictures its amazing.. (on xt4)
Would have been a nice option when I picked up the Fuji x-t30. I ended up with a used Zeiss 32mm f1.8 and I been loving it. I got it for 350 CDN. So I got lucky.
Used xf 35/2 is under $300 all over the place, they should've released a newer and affordable XC 60mm F2 or 1.8 with some macro capabilities (similar to the old 60/2.4) and portraiture for those who can't afford the 56/90/80 and 50/2 is too short for real portraits. Compression of longer FL (60mm) will help with shallower DOF in the absence of wider apertures of 1.4 and 1.2. I guess thats the reason their xf 23/2 and xf 35/2 are more popular than the xf 50/2
im researching the XF 35mm f/2, and after seeing images, and specs to the 1.4 the 2 seems to be so much better with sharpness on all F settings, less chromatic aberration, and less vignetting. i guess people get the 1.4 bc its a 1.4.
i tend to comment while i'm still watching the video. I guess the purpose for the cheaper f2, is for a good lens but sacrificing durability, which i think is nice for those who cant afford $$$ at the moment. that's a fair deal. I'm learning fuji still, but im so impressed with their quality and options for equipment for people. Their prices seem to be justified, and a significantly cheap lens that works the same as the 'higher dollar' is amazing. if i bought a cheap lens from canon that was $200 (or $400) it'd be plastic and cheap with the glass.

based on the side-by-side photos shown, i could see that the colors are slightly more saturated on the wr, revealing a better lens coating. the difference in coating is visible when look at the lenses glass.
5:36 They have different coatings. The XC seems to have a tiny bit more of contrast. But well, I bought a XC for 170€ brand new for my used X-T10. I like the 50mm look more and I use it like a X100, a small and lightweight camera combo I can always have in my backpack and is with 300€ cheap. The image quality is great across the frame, I´ve seen worse on a fast lens. And I like the creamy Bokeh, the colour rendition and the focusing speed. All in all a good allrounder.
Comparison between Fuji 35mm F2 XC and XF lenses, focusing on optical performance and build quality. Both lenses have the same optical formula, providing similar sharpness, resolution, and bokeh characteristics. The XF lens has a metal build with weather sealing, while the XC lens is plastic and lacks weather sealing. Price difference: XC lens costs $199 USD (approx. $4000 CAD), while XF lens is double the price at $399 USD (approx. $8000 CAD). Considerations for buyers: XF lens offers better build quality and weather sealing, while XC lens provides affordable optical performance for those on a budget.
does fuji have any low price wide angel lens like signa 16mm f1.4 for canon or sony? or 3rd party made any? I like the fuji colors, but I can't find any cheap wide angle 16mm lens for low light video making. Thanks.
I already have the XF version. Otherwise I would get the XC one. I don't need WR and the few grams do make a difference. Especially when traveling and depending what X-Body you use. The XC one is a great choice for people wanting to use a prime lens, but don't want to spend much money since they aren't into photography. And the focal length is easier to work with than a 50mm at the beginning.
I love my 35 and it's actually the one lens I use the most. It's a good thing Fuji is now releasing a cheaper version for those wanting to try and get their feet wet with Fuji systems
Just came across this older video. But help me to understand. You’re reviewing 35mm lens but calling them nifty 50’s. Ok, I’m starting to understand there’s a crop factor. So then if this same ‘35’mm lens was put on a full frame camera, would it be a ‘50’ mm lens? And if I buy a nifty ‘50’ mm lens. Aka I brought a Canon EF 50mm for a Digital Rebel 300d. Then what is it called?
how does this lens compare to the 35 1.4 ? and does anyone if fuji will ever give a new 35 1.4 with the same quality, faster focus water resistant and with image stabilisation ? thats what the people are missing more
The irony is that one of the compelling things about many Fuji lenses is the aperture ring on the lens WHERE IT BELONGS but dangit if "half off" isn't still 50% off (unless it's CDN$).
Huh, I was surprised that Chris mentioned polycarbonate for the lens mount, instead of Nylon. So, I popped the rear of my Sony DT 55-200mm off, and looked. Sure enough, the molding mark says "PC-GF20". So, polycarbonate with 20% glass fiber reinforcement.
I'm sooo torn! Honestly I like the look of the XF better and like the idea of the aperture ring... but, is it really worth an additional $4000 CAD? It's also nice that the XC is lighter! There isn't a clear winner I'm confused :(
As much as I want those better f2 lenses, this new lens is a very appealing option to me. I'm getting into the system this year and I dont have a large amount of money. I'll be getting the 15-45 for the wide end and I may get the cheap 35 f2 instead of the 50mm f2 I was going for
Buy the XC and with the $200 you saved, buy a bunch of beer, chips and a shrimp plate and have a party. Take a ton of pictures at the party with your new lens! Great review and as always, I don't buy any photo or audio gear without peaking in on this channel. Thank you.
The Canadian dealers are listing the XC 35mm @ 260.00+Tax CDN about the US--->CDN dollar exchange rate these days. The XF 35mm is going for 500.00+Tax CDN.
Great video can please make video about the new lenes vs 35mm 1.4 so the newest vs the oldest. I see that 35mm 1.4 better than 35mm f2 I use with xt30 it look for me 35 mm 1.4 really good
If I didn’t already own the 35mm f2 WR, I’d get this one in a heartbeat. I would love it if they did the same with the other lengths (23mm and 50mm), but not holding my breath
Wish they made a cheap plastic 23 mm F2. For $200 and the same optics, I can live without the aperture ring. That would pair nicely with my X-T30 plus I don't need the WR.
Finally, some lens for beginners and occasional shooters! Not ready to part with another 400 or 500 USD they were just stuck with their kit zoom before. Salvation.
good thing i was able to buy my XF35 used but in brand new condition at around $220, otherwise i would have felt ripped off lol. nonetheless, this is amazing optical performance for the price. a no-brainer purchase for all starting photographers like myself.

Cool and very accurate comparison, thx a lot.
Hey you guys! The difference is in the bayonet no? I worry about the plastic mount
How is the focusing motor of the new lens? Is it accurate and silent?
thank you for this video I just bought my xt3 and I was looking for some lens this video helped me
After watching thigs this vid I am now buying my first fuji lens which is Fuji 35mm F2 XC. TY for the review
I love my 35 and it's actually the one lens I use the most. It's a good thing Fuji is now releasing a cheaper version for those wanting to try and get their feet wet with Fuji systems
I might just get an xt200 with that affordable 35mm. Amazing bang for your buck.
Agreed ! The X-T200 is a real pleasure to use 😊 imagine if that XC 35mm was the kit lens 🤩
Great review big shoots!
Excelent video, great job!
Great job also to Fuji to provide this great performance at this price point. Hope we'll see it bundled in some kits.
Great review and well done Fuji
It's a super good review. Thanks.
I really did not expect that the AF motor will be same. XC 35mm F2 seems to be a real nice choice
I'd love it if we could get a rundown of your audio setup
Will the 35mm CX will works on a XPro1 ?
Man, forget the lens reviews, how about a hair styling video?
how does this lens compare to the 35 1.4 ? and does anyone if fuji will ever give a new 35 1.4 with the same quality, faster focus water resistant and with image stabilisation ? thats what the people are missing more
does the XF fit on the xt200?
The irony is that one of the compelling things about many Fuji lenses is the aperture ring on the lens WHERE IT BELONGS but dangit if "half off" isn't still 50% off (unless it's CDN$).
Will the XF lens work on X-T200 camera?
Huh, I was surprised that Chris mentioned polycarbonate for the lens mount, instead of Nylon. So, I popped the rear of my Sony DT 55-200mm off, and looked. Sure enough, the molding mark says "PC-GF20". So, polycarbonate with 20% glass fiber reinforcement.
I don’t think that it was pointed out here but the f2 has pretty noticeable chroma too. I haven’t used to XC lens so I don’t know about that one.
How about focusing speed and accuracy?
01:44 He says they are the same
@@AdamJRichardson Thanks Adam, I somehow missed that.
Love the exchange rate!
Wonder how it'll focus on the Xpro 1? Hopefully they will make a few more xc primes, I'd like to see a 18mm f2 & 23mm f2.
This is what I would like to know. I am happy using old OM manual lenses, but sometimes I'd like an autofocus lens.
Agree. 23 and 50
I'm sooo torn! Honestly I like the look of the XF better and like the idea of the aperture ring... but, is it really worth an additional $4000 CAD? It's also nice that the XC is lighter! There isn't a clear winner I'm confused :(
hi! one cuestion
Can you use it on a xpro1?
it’s an x mount lens, so yes
is both of them have image stabilization??
As much as I want those better f2 lenses, this new lens is a very appealing option to me. I'm getting into the system this year and I dont have a large amount of money. I'll be getting the 15-45 for the wide end and I may get the cheap 35 f2 instead of the 50mm f2 I was going for
@@aceflibble oh. I might end up getting the better 50mm f2 later.
I began on apsc though. Thanks!
The XF 35mm is going for 500.00+Tax CDN.
what is the video performance of these two lenses?
Great video can please make video about the new lenes vs 35mm 1.4 so the newest vs the oldest. I see that 35mm 1.4 better than 35mm f2 I use with xt30 it look for me 35 mm 1.4 really good
That`s been done to death. Many, many vids on You tube about that. Please, not another one.....
how about a xc 18-55 kit lens?
If I didn’t already own the 35mm f2 WR, I’d get this one in a heartbeat. I would love it if they did the same with the other lengths (23mm and 50mm), but not holding my breath
i have XT20 wich one should i buy ?
If you have the money get the more expensive one, if not get the cheaper one. I use this ""method"" for everything lol
Nice, thanks Fuji! I’m in Canada, so I might just put my car up for sale so that I can grab a brand new XC35mm! 🥳
The canadian dollar has depreciated compared to euro/dollar but not by great measures.
Is there something else i miss?
how is the 35mm for portrait photography on the xt30 crop sensor?
Good enough. But, I think you should go with 50mm or 85mm instead.
Salvation.
Thank you for review
good thing i was able to buy my XF35 used but in brand new condition at around $220, otherwise i would have felt ripped off lol. nonetheless, this is amazing optical performance for the price. a no-brainer purchase for all starting photographers like myself.
