    The question at 28:58, and Misha's explanation all the way to 36:24 was probably one of my favorite things about this interview. I've looked up to Misha and his musical journey since the late 2000's Bulb Demos, and hearing the way he explained his "feeling of purpose" with the chance to work a job he didn't hate, while being able to spend his free time chasing his musical dreams, was really nice to hear at this moment in my life.

    • @wavewithus4081
      @wavewithus4081 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah great highlights! I also love the part immediately afterwards where he talks about 'demo-itis' and how you often lose a 'vibe' or 'energy' when rerecording (old) demoes. That dissapointment after hearing the mixed result thats objectively better but subjectively worse somehow lol. I struggle with that a lot too

  • @P0rnCoachWill

    I've always thought Misha seemed like such a chill dude in a genre that often takes itself way too seriously. That's definitely the vibe I get from this interview as well. Thanks for the fun conversation guys.

      These dudes named songs and albums after memes, song about hating ketchup (scarlett lol), 'this time is personal','djent is not a genre', the last sound you hear on their latest album is the guitarist cheekily saying 'suck my balls'. Periphery is awesome cause they definitely vibe with and fuck around with all the goofiness around the genre

    • @thaddeusk
      @thaddeusk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cornela1 I don't think Scarlet is literally about hating ketchup, but it made for a fun video. I think it's more about avoiding giving in to hate, anger, and revenge and embracing forgiveness instead. Revenge might be the easier way to make you feel better, but you stain yourself at the same time.

    I love the conversation, I can really empathize with a lot of his notes about watching friends all going to college being passionate about a range of different fields, only for all of us to land in the same call centers, or coffee shops. I went for marketing, and digital design, and while I would eventually land a decent job that pays okay... its took about a decade of building a network of local artists to find a spot that opened up.
    Thankfully, it has helped having bands like Periphery (and all those in that same prog-metal circle) to get me through some rough times.
    Nice work Finn!

    I was very inspired by everyone Misha listed at 25:01. Such a great moment in time for home production in progressive music. I feel like Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker deserves an honorable mention as well. The production quality and writing on "The Discovery" and "Beacons" was insane considering the minimal amount of hardware and plugins used on those albums.

    I love the disagreement between Finn and Misha on whether Periphery is ripping off Meshuggah! It's super funny to watch. What do you guys think? Can you perceive Meshuggah's influence in Periphery's music? That section on demoing and rerecording was such a cool topic of discussion. I used to find myself romanticizing the idea of getting better recorded better mixed versions of my favorite albums and then there were some popular scenarios where it happened and I realized how important all that was to giving a particular character.

    Never heard anyone talking about this demo and re-recording thing before somehow, but this is SO real. I felt so seen by this conversation hahaha. It's so weird when you try to recapture that vibe and it's just so different when you try and "perfect" it. Ultimately I usually like the re-recorded version better, but sometimes it definitely feels like you lost something along the way. It's all just part of the process though.

    I remember back in 08 or 09, i was a junior in high school and Periphery added me on myspace. Hadn't listened to them before but i fell in love and as a fan of canadian deathcore it was right up my alley rhythm wise. Wasn't til a couple months later i discovered his SoundClick account and found the song Buttersnips. I used to drive my non-driving friends crazy listening to that shit on the way to computer class. I busted the speakers in my volvo 940 listening to specifically Bulb solo stuff. This interview is answering so many questions i had over a decade ago. I was a senior when the self titled album dropped and it became my whole personality. Adam Nolly GetGood and Sikth both shaped my perception of what progressive modern metal should sound like at the time. I think misha might have been 25 when i found them cuz he was working at an office supply store and always said, "Don't be frivoulous with your money and you too can afford an ENGL tube head."

    So stoked when I saw this! You always trash djent, even though it's in good fun, but Periphery is one of the greatest bands of our era and Misha single-handedly invented the current wave/style of "djent" starting back in the late MySpace days as "Bulb". I went seamlessly from an emo/metalcore kid to a young college kid listening to all of the early djent in about 2007. I was like, this is the new wave that's going to hit and you can't deny the direct link from djent to the current wave of metalcore and other stuff that mixes those grooves, tones, riff, etc.

    Way back in the day, my local band was offered a record deal from a smaller but recognizable label. They were willing to take most of our sales, no assistance with tours, no assistance with merchandising, minimal assistance with promotion. We passed and made the correct decision. I'm sure many bands would have jumped all over it, but we recognized nonsense and didn't want to accept it just to seem "like we made it." Like Misha said, a record deal is not a good deal just because of the label status.

    I always think about what would have happened if Jimi Hendrix had been a music Major in a college. They would have told them right from the get-go that he sounded like s*** that it was bad that he couldn't read music and that he had no future as a musician. He would have struggled for sure because he wasn't very well schooled in music. He very well could have dropped out of school and then quit music all together.
