- I've had a number of ideas for VGM lists / countdowns in my head for awhile now, but I never have the time to make them. I realized it's been over a year since my last one, so I thought I might as well do some quicker lists. What do you guys think of more short lists featuring a specific composer like this, or featuring a specific game?
Anyway, I've become a huge fan of Jake Kaufman since starting this channel, and even putting together this list it's obvious how talented of a composer he is. So sit back, and enjoy his varied tunes!

Did Jake Kaufman not do the recent Shantae games? How foolish of way forward not to bring this guy back. He was the reason I fell in love with the Shantae games.

I love your countdowns and would love to see more of 'em even if they're shorter and more focused. Great concept for a countdown on this one, btw. Kaufman is a talented guy.
I like the idea of this as well.
In my opinion, Jake Kaufman has an energetic, fast-paced charm to his music,
like how Koji Kondo has a feel-good vibe,
and David Wise has a relaxing tone,
and Grant Kirkhope brings a sort of magic and wonder to his games he composes in.

They all have their own unique styles. But one thing is for sure, they all graduated from certified banger university. Crush 40 and Koji Konda. As you mentioned, David wise and grant kirkhope, Evelyn Fischer. All have their masters in making certified bops
All these songs are a perfect example why Jake (Virt) is one of my favorite music composers!
Especially the Shantae and Shovel Knight music tracks ;)

I'm also gonna say I'm totally on board with this 'focused top 10' sort of style.
Jake Kaufman is great, and his music is so immediately recognizable that this is a good place to start. I'd like to see some less recognizable composers get this treatment, but at the same time I'd be interested to see your personal top 10 of some of the really big names that worked on lots of notable games like Yoko Shimomura or Hideki Naganuma, too... Or lists based on just one series known for great music... Look, it's all good, I just like the idea.

I love the idea of composer-focused top 10 lists. I'd like to see more of these too.
(Although I don't think anyone can top Jake Kaufman as my favorite composer, but ey who knows?)
Jeroen Tel maybe? :P Or one of the other famous SID composers, though that might ultimately just be my personal preference for that chiptune variant
Jake also worked on video game remixes as well. I recommend checking out a song he worked on called "The Impressaro." It took the play from Final Fantasy 6 and turned into this Bohemian Rhapsody-like song.
I loved his work with Contra 4 !!! guy is truly gifted.
Definitely make more of these, I would love them, found some great new tracks in this video.
I found Jake Kaufman from Mighty Switch Force but I haven't actually played any games that he's composed on I just like his style. I might buy some of these just for the music though lol.

Jake Kaufman should join the team of composers for a Pokemon game. The hype would be through the roof! The Shantae Boss Battle theme is super in-character for Pokemon battle themes!
Just discovered this for the first time when considering doing my own list... now I kinda shouldn't cause your list basically has most of my picks, almost in the same order lol.
Nice to see one of your well-colored lists, yet again. Just keep making sure that your picks for composers and such, because I would prefer that, actually, is varied enough, so it isn't predictable.
If you want to make another composer list like this, I would effervescingly prefer to start with the more popular folks, like Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shimomura, or Koji Kondo, and then, make your way below the rainbow road to the most obscure ones, like Jun'ichi Masuda (he's actually not that well-known, other that his works on Pokemon), or Hideki Naganuma.

Jake kaufman have so much more than energetic music. He have some really beautiful music. For example le bouquet megique from shovel knight or peaceful moon from bloodryne.
and of course some really frickin good jazzy tracks
24:11 It's true, Kaufman did a great job on this, but his Remastered arrangement for The Moon is unbeatable imo.
I expected much more generic, widely-known tracks, but you didn't go there. Good.

Strike the Earth is probably Kaufman's best known track, but the Adventure Time one is also amazing!
Featuring a specific game is a bit tougher, since not too many games have 10 great tracks on their own... maybe Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross could be good choices? FF9 and Symphony of the Night are other good ones, too.
You sure about that no one game having 10 good tracks on its own? I know music is subjective, but could name at least 3 good examples.

Weird I learned his name because of the group Big Bad Bosses. Knew his work in shovel knight, but didn't really know his name.
I found Jake Kaufman from Party in the Clouds, I really like that song, it never get boring.

A few expected tracks and a few not-so-expected tracks, plus a lot of vocals early in the list.
Top 10 from a game might be a little trickier to pull off, although I'm sure there are plenty of games that would support it, but ten from a composer is perhaps more interesting. And it lets us see that a particular composer isn't only known for one thing in particular, the way I think of, say, Jeremy Soule as doing almost exclusively background near-ambient music.
Actually, it'd be hilarious if you did one for Sakuraba, and we got to listen to 10 songs from different games that all sound exactly the same. I know you're a fan of his stuff, so you could totally make that happen. Just play Leap the Precipice and The True Mirror and a bunch of Tales battle themes...
I will then refer you to the "Gaia Online zOMG" or "Monster Galaxy" soundtrack (they're the same) which Soule composed and is a bit more charming than ambient
I realize this list is two years old but you should totally listen to the CAVE DoDonPachi arranges by Kaufman. They are fantastic.

This went from 10/10 to 9/10
To be honest, I expected Disco Decent from Cyrpt of the NecroDancer. He KILLS it in that one.
Too bad his Bandcamp has none of his Red Faction tracks, best ones weren't solely made by him thought. But now to the actual list, its pretty solid and shows how varied he can be. I'm not sure how these go chronologically but i first took notion of him from Red Faction Guerrilla. Thanks to this list i also found couple gems i had missed, thanks for sharing it.
Hands down best composer... next to Richard Jacques... damn, its so hard to decide!!!

If I recall correctly, this same guy did the music composition for an obscure kaiju fighting game called Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee which has a pretty badass OST.
