For real. Patrick told the story himself when his Mother sent him in her place for her induction into the Bucks County Playhouse Hall of Fame during Hammerstein Festival. It's why David remade the song on "Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes".
Ironically, the last time I saw David Cassidy was in 2009, when he gave a free Summer concert at a Bensalem, Bucks County Park ampitheater. Sadly, it was just on the cusp of his gradual downward spiral. He forgot the words to a few of his hits, complained about the lighting, and snapped at the old fans who wanted an autograph, proclaiming that he didn't do those things anymore. A far cry from when I had the pleasure of meeting him at Tower Records in Philly in 1993, when I found him to be a youthfully handsome, wonderfully gracious man. I had been a fan from the age of 13 in 1970 and saw him in concert multiple times in the 70's. To realize just how cruel time, circumstance and the universe would betray him was just heartbreaking. What a gifted, multi-talented man, who deserved so much more than the hand he was dealt.
Well the cast did bond like a second family. Heck, most stayed in touch for over 40 years. On a Today segment with Katie Couric, Suzanne did state David was like a big brother. I think all looked thrilled he sang to them.

When I just close my eyes and I trace

Where we spent our early summer days
The hill we climbed that went on forever
We reached the top of the world together

High above all time and space and I remember summer days
When you gave your love to me and I remember perfectly
High above all time and space and I remember summer days
Come climb that hill again with me; come live that love again with me
Baby, baby, baby, baby; hold my hand and we'll be free; said we'll be
