Maya is the only 3D software that isn't strictly in-house (Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney, etc.) that features parallel rig evaluation. The OpenGL viewport 2.0 is the highest-performing I've ever used, it can handle dozens of millions of polygons on animated characters at full framerate.

No. Colin Levy (Director of Sintel) was hired by Pixar on the strength of his work, not the software he used. He's since moved on but the point still stands. Unless we're talking about Houdini (and in several cases, even then); _skills transfer_ . Build your foundations, become (to quote Seth Godin) So Good They Can't Ignore You. They will happily train you in whatever in-house pipeline they use.

Of course simply having Maya experience is not the only factor but it is the baseline for you to even be considered for a position in a shop where Maya is the Main pipeline 3DCC.
the industry decides what is the standard
so if you want to work in the industry you have to conform.
That is the reality in so many other industries as well.

Unfortunately, not in the so close future, other programs such as Blender are coming right on board. Mark it😊

Yup, and I don't mean this as a slight against Blender, blender is a great piece of software. But if the job ad specifically requests Maya and you only know Blender, are you going to get past the HR screen? Personally I would like to think so, that if your resume and portfolio is strong enough you would still get the interview and or job even if you did not use Maya. At the same time however HR may simply trash your application right there and move on to the person with experience in Maya. So if you don't have maya as your 3d base (and yes obviously you should know other software like Zbrush, Substance painter, designer etc...) it can be harder.
Yes I do see more job ads that will lists " Maya or Blender or 3d software equivalent", so Blender is "getting up there" but that is not the case with I would argue a good majority of job ads. For better or for worse Maya is still the baseline though I do hope that one day Blender will be up there as well.

@@tiredguy2753 Well said and sadly the truth. However, it is not a surprise that our today's world is filled with conspiracies especially on a specific program or policy. We understand the mentality 😅 and hope to change the occultic narration soon. And on the side of HRs and job givers we say...the sky is wide enough to birth opportunities for the unexpected. Disruptively or magically, time shall take them by storm. No thanks to Elon Musk 😂

I actually got a job with Maya, because the test was to be done in Maya. I hadn't used it before, as I was using Blender and 3Ds Max, but with a few weeks of doing tutorials online I was able to prepare and I managed to ace the test and interviews, and now I work in Maya almost exclusively. To be honest, now I love the software and I can understand why sooo many studios and companies use it.

Does Maya have a similar modeling workflow as Blender?
Because I wanna learn Maya but I hear a lot of people complain about a lack of a non destructive way of modeling.

@@Dumka78 I'd say they're equally hard to learn, but when you get the hang of it, it's pretty much the same. Blender has a loooot of free online tutorials, but the software changes a lot from update to update, whereas the Maya interface stays pretty much the same

I'm just glad that I've used Maya for 24 years. I haven't been consistent, so I am not as far along as I'd like to be looking at these clips you're playing. But then too, there's another possibility. One can be a professional creative (as I am) and surprise them with your 3D skills incorporated where it's not expected. Others are starting to learn 3D, but you remain most knowledgeable.
But now that there's Blender and AI...I don't know what people are impressed by. That was even noted here, "A kid using Blender..." Ugh.

My question is (for someone who is not familiar with 3d and vfx that much yet) how can the dude say that millions of people have access and can make that scene in Maya when the entry fee to even download these program is enough to not let most people in. The only industry i have seen that has such high prices for it's softwares that leads me to believe that it's a not very much crowded one.

I appreciate the advice however it’s just too much. I don’t want anything so bad that I am forced to compromise my moral standard. These studios know how badly a person would like to land one of these jobs. Do you think that they care about how a person is treated knowing this. Not worth it unless it comes with a kick ass house, car and supermodel. Anything less is a joke. Do your own thing and forget about studio jobs.
