Have you ever wondered how to get those smoky blues sounds that you hear in classic movies?
Particularly when the movie cuts to a scene in a bar, it's late at night and people are hanging out listening to a blues band, and then all the sudden the band kicks into an AWESOME slow blues.
When it comes to playing a slow blues this pattern I am going to show you in today's video is a must-know for every blues guitarist.
It comes straight out of the T-Bone Walker school of blues guitar.
In this video you'll learn how to play "Stormy Monday" as recorded by the Allman Brothers from the Live At Fillmore East album on guitar.
You'll learn:
-T-Bone Walker's favorite chord shape
-How to use sliding triads for a classic blues rhythm sound
-How to change just a few chords from a simple 12-bar blues and really spice it up

Stormy Monday 🎤Lyrics:
They call it stormy Monday
But Tuesday's just as bad
They call it stormy Monday
But Tuesday's just as bad
Lord, and Wednesday's worse
And Thursday's all so bad
The eagle flies on Friday
Saturday I go out to play
The eagle flies on Friday
Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church, yeah
Gonna kneel down and pray
Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Though I'm tryin' and tryin' to find my baby
Won't somebody please send 'er home
Oh ho
Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Yeah, I'm proud, Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Though I'm tryin', tryin' to find my baby
Won't send 'er home, yeah, oh baby

Love ❤ your approach, so honest
I really appreciate the detail to which you explained the critical little subs and fills that make this a timeless classic
I used to perform with a gentleman who played the piano and sang the blues and everything from his heart and soul . He passed away early from substance use. Great tune.❤
Very, very well done, Jon. The D11 chord is so often played and taught as Aminor7 (Am7), but you can clearly hear the bass (Berry Oakley) going back and forth from the D root to the V note (A) below, then to the D# (Eb) note against the band playing Cm7. I saw the original ABB play it, and I know you are correct. Their version of “Stormy Monday” has been the standard for over 50 years now. T-Bone and Bobby Blue Bland set the bar high but The Allman Brothers Band topped it. Outstanding tutorial!
Nice job....my favorite band.... I'm old enough to have seen them three times with Duane, Berry, Dickie, Greg, Butch and Jaimo way back in 1970 and 1971..... Duane and Dickie taught me everything I know about playing the guitar.....self taught... listening to the Live at the Fillmore East album....no TH-cam back then
SWEET! I heard the first chord, with it's hint of reverb -- I was immediately transported back to that concert. I'm a bassist, and I thank you for breaking it down so meticulously.
Once again JonMacLennan demonstates excellence in teaching. I have played for about 4-5 months, have taken his first 2 courses. It's hard to believe that in several hours I have learned ther esentials of Stormy Monday. He is very clear and the camera work is excellent.
Great song breakdown. I love Stormy Monday
Wow
Best lesson on this song by far!
Excellent..my favorite cover blues song that any band has ever done, to date! Anything the Allman Brothers has done , cover or written, was masterful and sincere..IMHO.
Spot on Jon!
This is an excellent lesson. There is so much goodness in just my learning that intro for now. Where have I been not to have learned that G9! Great chord and I love movable shapes. Thx Jon.
One of my all time favorite songs . Thank You so much for putting this lesson out there for us to see and learn from. Fantastic lesson.
Thank you Jon. Classic tune. I am thrilled that you cover so many Allman Brothers songs...they are my all time favorite band.
Excellent thank you Jon!
This was an excellent tutorial on an amazing version by ABB. Thank you for the detailed breakdown

Thank you Jon. This was an excellent lesson on a great slow blues song!
How about doing the Bobby Blue Bland version.
You should be able to work out the Bobby Blue band version with this info. All the info is here.
Thanks for this updated lesson. The old one was good, this one really nails it.
Hi jon, your lessons are great super easy to learn from your step by step instructions. I worked on this video as well as dickey betts solo videos 1 & 2. I love the allman brothers music. I would love it if you could make more videos of the songs. Possibly the song dreams. Thanks for all your help!!!!
Merci pour tes excellentes explications !! j'ai découvert Dickie Betts grâce à toi , il y a 1 mois!, et j' apprends qu'il vient de mourir ce jeudi 24 avril !!! Je suis vraiment très triste
Great video thanks 👍. What tone are you using? It's awesome
Excellent lesson, thanks!
5 STARS!

Great lesson Jon! Thank you!🤙🏽😁
John your instructions are awesome! Can you break down “ Here and Now” by Luther Vandross?? Thanks
I'd like to hear a lesson on "Your Funeral My Trial" Thanks!
Great lesson; thanks.
Great lesson!!
John, that was superb
This is an excellent lesson!
Hi John,great lesson!!!!!
Hi Jon,
How about a lesson on Framptons Do you feel like we do. Of course with all lead parts. Thanks!
Lovely!
Great job. Thx
Terrific Lesson! How about Allman Brothers 'Come on in my Kitchen".
I had to watch it about 4 times, but I’m on my way. Thanks for the breakdown.
Love this lesson .. some great subtleties and chord nuances .. my only challenge is you're not playing a Les Paul or SG to teach it!! :-) ..
Perfect!
Nice job..again!
Wow ! Brings back memories of T-Bone Walker ! Very nice !
@Gangnam Style Grandpa T Bone is one of my all time favorites. Love the Allman Bros also but check out Bobby Bland's edition with the great Wayne Bennett on guitar. 👊🏾
John great vid…exactly the arrangement I was looking for. Took about an hour to get it down. Plenty of room for my own fills to fit in the groove. Now I just need to my vocals tight with this arrangement…that’ll be interesting. My Buddy will do the solos on harmonica. Thanks again great vid.
Tried several tutorials and none come close to yours
Thanks
Fantastic lesson by a brilliant musician.
Tablature would've been very beneficial to someone such as myself who can't necessarily see the placement of the hands and on what strings.
If you wouldn't mind and have the time could you please provide all of the tablature for this song.
Thank you in advance,
Jeff
Hi Jon awesome lesson and im really going to learn this song and get some of these chords into my blues playing more often especially that augmented chord. I would love for you to do a lesson of it hurts me too - john mayall & the bluesbreakers. Peter Green's lead playing is absolutely incredble and i think is a great example of using the major pentatonic and some mixolydian ideas too! thanks
Man, so good! Beautiful Song, love this Allman Brothers cover of this Classic! Jon, awesome playing, awesome lesson! Thank you so much! 🎸🎶
Jon could you teach Weight by the Band
Thanks Jon! I've wanted to learn this tune, and Statesboro Blues. Have you
ever taught the latter? If not, let me know if you'd be willing to give it a shot.
You have a good feel for the blues. Thanks, Bill
That tone is killer - how about a rig rundown sometime?
Good job Jon ! Thanks from France.
Have you tab anywhere ?
That's a favorite of ABB,,
Hello Jon. If your willing to take this one on, it's your groove. Will you please give us a lesson on Deep Down in Florida by Muddy Waters?
Great lesson! How do I get a PFD of it?
RIP Dickey🎚️
Hi John!,what would that setup that your using ,run me?
Thks
Nick

I have tried to create an account on your website but it seems to be impossible. You can login if you already have an account, but there is no way to create one. Please fix. Thanks.
Cm/D# is not the best here before the turnaround. a Cm7 sounds better, or a D#M7 is quite nice. In my ear only ;)
Great lesson, but a shame that you give no credit to Wayne Bennett, who played on the Bobby Bland version. The Allan’s cover lifts his chord work in its entirety.
kold actions jimmy dawkins?!?!?
Great video. Clear, understandable and well taught. Some TH-camrs can play the guitar, but cannot teach it effectively. You can do both. Anyway, annexed is a link to my own “Stormy Monday” cover, inspired by your excellent tutorial. If you have time to listen, please check it out with good headphones as I put a huge effort into arranging it!! Thanks again. “Stormy Monday”: th-cam.com/video/VwmkApknJ_g/w-d-xo.html
Isnt it funny that the things worth learning are from 50 years ago? Music today is such garbage.
Not true, try Marcus King, Sturgill Simpson, Arlo McKinley
@@mkwalkerrealestateyou know music
Seems you have to wear a hat in doors to play the blues. Not just any hat but one that looks like a cowboy hat for a child.
Duain Allman is Rolling in his Grave. Playing with a Telecaster. Shameful 👎. Twangy.
