Yes, you can! As long as you make sure to remove all plant material in the spring. Also, let the sand dry out during the summer so no mold will grow. Then you can moisten it again in the fall. Thanks for the commend!
Hello there and thanks for the comment! I just use play sand. Nothing fancy! Then I let it dry out completely in the spring when the root cellar is empty. Might not want to have giant boxes though, mine get pretty heavy!
Thanks for the video, I’ll be using sand to preserve my carrots as well over the fall/winter. Since I’m not a fan of buying new plastic stuff, do you think wooden crates will work ? I’m also planning to store my beetroots this way. Just one more question, since the veggies are buried in sand, the storage room doesn’t have to be fully dark right? Thank you
I definitely think wooden crates will work. Probably something like pine or cedar that won’t rot as easily. I think you do need to cover the sand if your room isn’t dark. Roots underground will start to sprout if there’s light. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I used my insulated fish cooler. Works great!
Can I reuse the sand multiple years in a row?
