      For sci fi, I recommend Project Hail Mary. I know it wasn’t your fav but the three people I’ve told about it, really enjoyed it. I tried to read Dune years ago and thought it was awful. Have seen it in bookstores lately and thought maybe I should give it another try. After listening to you, I’ll quit while I’m ahead. 😂

    Hi, Emily! I have been watching your channel for a very very long time and I remember when you’d answer these questions with Harry Potter as the book/series you’ve read the most, or Sam Gamgee being one of your all time favorite characters. It’s nice to see how your answers are changing, because mine have changed too, though still Sam is baby and needs to be protected, but overall our tastes have matured and refined, and it’s nice to see you enjoying more and more books that aren’t the most mainstream, but they’re your stream haha.
    Keep it up, Emily!

    Not me waiting for you to whip out Ice Planet Barbarians in the "guilty pleasure" category 🤣🤣 (I think you reading that was more a guilty pleasure for everyone else TBH). Also, I COMPLETELY agree with you about Dune. That is one of the only scifi books I've read that I like the movie adaptations so much more than the books. Have you read "The Book That Wouldn't Burn" by Mark Lawrence? I'm 25% of the way through it and I feel like you'd like it. Happy Monday! xo

    I actually like Ruby Dixon's books. If I were to recommend books to someone, these days I'd recommend The Color of Distance by Amy Thomson, Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon, Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, Seveneves by Neil Stephenson.
    When it comes to series, I'd recommend Jean Johnson's " Theirs Not to Reason Why" series (love the tropes in the series) which is also connected to her "First Salik War" series about humanity's first contact with other alien races. I'd also recommend Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse series for something more light and fun to read (though books haves some chapters that aren't so funny))

      @llaiyaz I honestly thought when I started reading that I wasn't going to super love it. And I kept going cause I didn't hate it. But I enjoyed the world and the concept. And then... it is so worth the read. I really liked the parts before the school, but I can appreciate that when thats when you know what you are getting yourself into that's what you are expecting. I would say give it another go, get to the school and then see how you feel

    Hi Emily, mentioning you love scifi books I have a question. Apart from Neuromancer that eveyone knows, I was reommended to read Schismatrix Plus (1996) by Bruce Sterling as a classis cyberpunk piece which was an inspiration for later works by other famous authors. To my great surprise, almost no one talks about this book, why? Have you read it? If not look it up. Thanks.

      Once you have some vocabulary you could try rereading books (especially YA) in French.

    I feel you hate for DUNE. It's my most hated book of all time. It took that spot and nothing can fight it down from there. This could only become so popular pushed by certain men wanting to be the chosen one, and they will forever deny that there is something wrong with this book. While the list of WTFs about Dune is eternal.
    I also gave it one star and it didn't take a day for men on goodreads to ask me why I would do that.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t notice any big difference. I did like reading it more but it’s just because I got more out of it by reading the book again. I’m sure I’ll feel like that each time I reread it

      That's good to hear, it suggests the translation was true to the text. My French is very rusty, so I wouldn't get far with the original 😂

    I'm a sad person since besides my mom, nobody in my circle reads, so can't recomend books. And my mom and i have different tastes (which is funny since it was she who would bring fantasy books from the library to me). She reads literature, classics and magical realism (one of her favourite authors is Isabel Allende and if you know her books, are full of magical realism). And I am more of a fantasy, science fiction, non-fiction kind of gal.

      I’m on the same boat as you. My mom is the only avid reader in my admittedly small circle and our tastes are so different 😭. She likes to read steamy historical fiction, metaphysical books, pseudo science, magical realism and generally things that have a guaranteed happy ending. 😢 I read a lot of different genres except those lol. Right now I’m reading The Unmaking of June Farrow and 8 minutes in I’m bored.

    I have to disagree on Blood over Bright Haven being a bingeread, at least it wasn't for me. It was great, I also gave it easily 5 stars, but it was so PAINFUL to read. The emotional hurt! the rage! I kept having to put it down, because I was in no condition to read something so heavy and I needed to read something lighthearted and humorous on the side to not fall into a reading slump.

    I do think you are wrong about Dune. I would have expected that you would have been very intrigued by the Bene Gesserit. I might suggest that you listen to some youtube videos that do detailed summaries of the series to get more about them. As the series develops we learn more and more about them, and I really think that they would speak to your interest in feminist prose. The summaries might be adequate for the purpose of enjoying the idea of the sisters without the mechanics of Frank Herbert's writing that you really disliked. Or, maybe wait until the TV series about them comes out. Might get you the good stuff?
    In contrast, I read /I Who Have Never Known Men/ on your recommendation. I found the premise intriguing - perhaps as intriguing as I have in other of my favorite sci-fi novels. However, for me the prose in English was so dry that I had trouble staying engaged and motivated to keep with it. I understood that the narrator was emotionally altered by the circumstances of her upbringing. For me, though, I wondered if it would have had more impact were it not a first person perspective.
