  • Life in Thailand can be simple.. live the life you want and not what you think you're expected to live.
Young family trying to make it work in Thailand. It's not an easy task... We will share the challenges... the up's and down's...
If you have any questions I'm probably not the best person to give you solid advice but I will answer to the best of my knowledge and anything I share i've normally heard from a thai or a well established foreigner so isn't always 100% correct.

Good luck mate.... I could see myself in your shoes 20 years ago when I left the UK and built our house in Mukdahan NE Thailand, my daughter is now 16 yrs old and for all the turbulence in the early days and the negative comments I endured I am still here and still smiling with a brilliant life with support from my wife family who live next door who have been unbelievably helpful over the years. I really hope the sun shines on you for the next 20 years as it has on me 🙏

@@lifeinisan Yes, I probably say mine/my too - - I've been lucky but firmly believe in sharing my luck w/not only my wife and kid but her family too... there is a saying that a Thai lady cannot be happy drinking out of fine crystal if her mother is drinking from a coconut shell. I like my Thai family and lived amongst them building a family compound for near 20 years.... all that said, you must consider variables and at my age, another consideration is how much longer I will be around - being young, there is nothing wrong w/wanting to know your wife and child will have a roof overhead forever. As you go along in life, you will need to keep re-evaluating... As you know, things change.. good luck.

Built a nice house and have a farm 17 years ago in Isaan.
Never again put anything in someone else's name.
If there's any life threatening emergency and you need to sell the property, Chances are pretty good that family won't sell the property to help you in a crisis.
It's possible that you could be abandoned when you need help the most.

Just found your channel Drew. Great video, I will have to catch up on your others. I live in mid Isaan with my almost Thai wife (soon lol) and 2 year old baby boy and we built a house last year on 1 rai and just finished building a new organic compost/fertilizer and chicken farm (eggs) business on another rai as extra income for her (us) - she is a school science teacher and I own a web company in the UK (fully run by my staff) so we have other income streams also. The farm has 1 full time employee also. I think it's a great life here and seeing young people like you moving here, starting a new life with a new family and building a house is great to see. For newbies to Thailand, if you buy or build a house for your lady, get her to borrow against the property to buy a big flash car that goes into your name.
1 million baht loan against the house for a flash wagon will cost approx 5000 a month.
If the worst does happen, she ends up with the 1 million debt and you own the flash wagon

That's an excellent view of how things can pan out for your relationship and your house. I get upset of how often men think so selfishly pertaining to property. Chances are you'll have kids, and more likely they will remain with their mother, so it is no loss to leave property for their future welfare. That's my same mentality and I already lost a house and property to that and never had a second thought.

The best way to protect your daughter is to protect yourself. Hire an attorney and get an ironclad WILL and business agreement putting everything in both your name and your wifes AS A BUSINESS not as family. Then, you will have control over your part of the property to leave to your daughter or do whatever you want to. DONT LEAVE IT TO CHANCE...EVERYTHING SHOULD BE IN WRITING. I learned this the hard way when my own elderly parents stole my inheritance from my grandmother. I had lived in my home for 25 years and put over $150,000 into improving the property and they stole it from me....GET IT IN WRITING.

I visit Thailand all my life and can easily argue how these guys who get fleeced are simply gullible and naively put all their eggs in one basket with partners who they met in questionable places. Your wife will spit the dummy if you suggest this. Insulting her mother through insulting her. You may have a lot to learn about culture. In the past I have been Requested to apologise t the Mother in Law due to a Barney between my wife and my self. She wasnt present at the time. But your wifes version of every event will be passed on to the parents and you have no defence unless you can speak the language.
Lots of words in Thai/Lao similar roots to English. Maybe this word barney and Mae Bahn are related. I refused to by the way. Still together. Building houses in a compound means its always going to be extended family making the decisions and the system of haerachy will rule your daughters decisions whether in her name or not. So much more to this.

As for owning the land , in Indonesia a foreigner cannot buy land. They say you can but the truth is you cannot. It has to be in a locals name which makes them the owner. I believe if you build a house you can own that and sell it if you need too. The Thai house you showed us was so bleak and dull. Why don't they add some decoration and furniture and make it look homey? And the dead electric plug. I would definitely make the man fix it and do a proper job of making the wall look perfect again. These places don't look very appealing. No flowers, bananas, mangoes, vegetable gardens. Maybe it's just the people that live there.

It's in the book "MONEY NUMBER ONE" (That you more than likely haven't read) never live within 200km of your Thai wife's family 300km if they have transport. Even the Thais know that. When we chose to live where we live now I asked my Thai wife why did she suggest there? Reply a long way from her family.
Regarding the socket, you can always run a new wire from a socket that works on the outside of the house through a conduit, drill a hole through the back of the socket, and connect. Not perfect but it's good enough, at least it'll stop them chopping up the wall on the inside. Just make sure they use 2.5 wire. Thais will skip and use anything they have.
Painting the wall/new concrete always use a sealer prior to Painting. It will cost a bit more but it'll last years longer (Tip. Never do it when it's wet or even damp)

@@lifeinisan Tip. Never rely on a Thai to do electricity. Why? because they will never do it correctly. I will lay odds that they haven't done a ring main (Look that up) At best they would have used plastic connector strips to connect the wires. At worse they would have wound the wires together and stuck black tape over the connections. Connector strips will last some 3/4 years before they go brittle and short out. At best you will lose power in some of the sockets/lights. At worse you will have a fire.
The first thing I did when we got our house was insure it for fire, then redid all the electricity myself using UK MK connectors. The latter not available here. Thank Buddha I know how to do Electricity to UK specifications. Oh, they don't have any Earths here. The best you can do is put an earth Stake in the ground and connect to that. Another Tip. Just make sure that at least your hot water showers are earthed. Many people die from Electric shock here if the showers short out. Best of luck.

Relationships are different in Thailand, typically not an amicable split, Thai women usually hate their ex after a breakup, regardless of how sweet they were during the relationship. They will want to punish you regardless of whether the split was your or their fault. That punishment typically involves assets, kids and ignoring that you exist for the most part. If the relationship ends she will likely turn your kid against you or at least try. You have unfortunately created a large power imbalance in the relationship that over time she may exploit. I'm hoping i'm wrong in your case, but I've been on the receiving end of this at no fault of my own. Start protecting yourself going forward, things can do a 180 flip so fast in Thailand, think about how you could manage looking after your daughter under a shared custody agreement, no house i.e. renting and working while trying to be a parent. Always best to plan for worst case even if it never happens, all the best, hope it works out for you!
