    Congrats on the battery change and the start-up improvement. Cheering for you from Florida!

    When screws are too tight, put the screwdriver into screw slot and lightly tap the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer (sometimes might require a harder tap or multiple taps). This will dislodge the corrosion on the screw threads and loosen it up.

    It’s your starter, fairly easy to swap out thankfully

      I might check the timing or try a new ignition module (on the distributor) if you have any future issues starting it up. I hope it keeps starting well and you don’t need to do that, however.

    There is a 20A fuse for the turn signals, this fuse is shared with the ignition. The Fuse boxes in these things do corrode, probably because of salt air in Japan. Wire brush on the fuse terminals, and a small emory metal emory board (like for fingernails) you can get into the fuse box terminal. (disconnect battery first). Dielectric grease is ALWAYS a great idea. Rooting for you from the Gulf Coast of Florida.

    1:15 you dont need to replace it, starters either work or they dont. if its slow, it still works but may be full of dust and crud or even the grease has gone hard. pull it, open it, spray it clean and regrease. will work like new.

    It could also be the alternator

    • @XXX-XX-X-X
      @XXX-XX-X-X 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really? Wouldn’t the alternator only be providing more power after the engine has fired up?

    Theres grounds and power wires on the starter itself that get corroded. Clean those off

    When wire brushing, use some solvents

      Hi, what solvent do you recommend?

    It almost sounds like your timing is a touch too far advanced. Definitely could cause a hard start condition. If you can borrow or rent a timing light id recommend checking that. I think orderzone will loan one. Pretty easy to adjust timing.

    If it keeps giving you trouble, have a friend tap the starter with a hammer while you try to start it.... Easiest to just replace, but more fun to take it apart and see whats going on inside. Also, that would make for a cool video.

      @@JulesMariani I'm not old myself but it's inspiring to see someone young tackle fixing up something like a Kei truck. I'm also about to get one though I've never worked on a vehicle in my life other than the normal oil change and stuff like that. Ready for a new chapter in my life lol. I'm in love with the retro look of these things even if its a price to pay for safety :P

    You can tell by the slow cranking its generally the starter, battery or timing too far advanced. Fuel very unlikely - coolant possible if hydro locking in cylinder(s). If motor runs normal first check starter related components first.

    The screws aren't phillips, they're JIS drive. Your phillips screwdriver will mangle the screw heads.

    • @JulesMariani
      @JulesMariani  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see haha! That makes sense why majority of my screw drivers weren’t working. I purchased that Philips head at Autozone and it did the trick. Screws are intact!

      @@JulesMarianiDoes it sit flush or does it stick out a bit? I bought a similar one for my 1990 and it wont sit flush because of the top of it. It hits the dash and sticks out about a half inch from where it should.

    • @JulesMariani
      @JulesMariani  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dfs316 it is nowhere near as flush as stock. However, it is not an eyesore. I think it sits nicely for my standards. I could show the radio more in-depth in a future video or create a TH-cam short. I have had quite a few people interested in the radio.

      @@JulesMariani Ok so you had the same issue. I was debating on sending it back for a regular size single din unit with a 5 inch screen. Its not too bad but it was bothering me. I tried a 1 inch extension kit made for gm but it was too big and I trimed it a bit. I might try universal din spacer or two on amzn I saw for $7 to take up the space before I decide to send it back.
