- Dave "Softy" Mahler, KJR-Radio, Seattle joins 365 Sports to discuss his thoughts from the state of the Washington program after Kalen DeBoer left for the Alabama head coaching job, his thoughts on a magical season for the Huskies, his thoughts on the Jedd Fisch hiring, and more.

I absolutely hate what has happened to college football. How is a fan supposed to stick with a team when the coaches and players are all short term rentals? Mad respect for Mark Few at Gonzaga who had options but stuck with the program in Spokane.
I agree, but just stick with your team no matter what. I am a Fresno State fan and Deboer was only there 2 years before leaving to hop to Washington. Washington fans get mad at him for leaving in the same amount of time. Maybe the writing was on the wall already?
@natlovell122 this comment is interesting considering I'm a Bama fan.
Dude, we had nick saban 17 years… do a Google search of how many of our coaches have been poached. Alabama doesn’t look for turn around, we look for someone to stick around. People just take our staff away
@Freedom_Half_Off praise you for your wisdom. As a die hard Longhorn fan having been through heartache and coaching carousel for the last decade and a half, and coming off a loss to an outlier performance of a covid 6th year QB, only to learn he used up all his magic bank account against my team and showed his true self in the championship game, after all the ish the delusional husky fans talked over the course of the last two months...I find all of it amusing to say the least.. lol
@@Freedom_Half_OffPerkins was the “rebound” after Bryant. He wasn’t liked very much when he coached at Alabama and was being pushed out the door.
Softy is the best, so entertaining. Thanks for having him on guys!! UDUB fan here and just love your show.
These players are picking schools according to Coaching and NIL. If you lose the coach good chance you lose a nice portion of what he recruited unless open the pocket book and beg really hard.
Yes we are at Alabama have lost a lot of our kids to this guy coming here we are totally screwed
Penn State faced a worse situation over a decade ago. Fortunately they had stand up players who not only weathered the storm but went on to win a championship.
It’s remarkable that PSU has continued its football program despite not having a head coach.
Hate to have to sit in the dmv in Tuscaloosa 😂
Fisch also left for a ton more money, and a massive jump in resources. Deboer actually took less money, and he also left his long time friends behind- unless he takes them eventually.
Is Bama really paying him less money?
As an Alabama fan I love the hire. I wish Washington nothing but the best. I feel for what they are going through.
But I do believe he deeply cared for those players. It showed in the press conference.
Don't worry about the UW. After a year or two, DeBoer will head to the NFL.
@@kennethrohen5963In Alabama the Crimson Tide IS the NFL. I know because thanks to my late father I’ve been Roll Tide my entire life of 60 years.
You will want to to throw him back after three years. Kalen sucks.
Welcome to OU's world.
Go Ducks !
Oregon won with Lanning staying. Bama will be looking for a new coach in five or so years.
Maybe it's stupid.....
All the universities form a trust and all coaches work for the trust. Each head coach would be subcontracted at what ever price is negotiated, just like now. The trust then could force the coaches to honor the contract eliminating buyouts. Fail to finish the contract, ineligible for 1 calander year starting at the contract breach date.
All player must sign a 2 year letter of intent when they enter college, if the 2 year contract is broken, and eligible for 1 year.
Cap the NIL with any amount, just make it so everyone operates on the same level. Spend how they want.
@@Freedom_Half_Off not saying my idea is a solid plan, just a rant..... but the conversation starts somewhere. There has to be a better way than what is happening now. When you are paid millions of dollars to produce and fail, I don't have any problem firing the coach. High rewards with high risk. Everyone of us would sign a 5 million dollar contract today knowing we could get fired at any time.
He went to a Better Place!
Sort of like Reggie Jackson signing with the Yankees?
I agree CFB is hosed. How do you reconcile pro football at a university?
So amazing how the fortunes can change so quickly. A few short weeks ago I and thousands of other Duck fans endured a ridiculous amount of trash talk ( rightly so with regard to the two losses, UW was the better team in those days. But then also when it seemed as though WE were about to lose our HC to Alabama! Fast forward to a loss I. The NCG snd the loss of YOUR coach, most of your coaching staff and all of your best players! I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of de-commits and portal transfers! Ow a program in shaanbles ( at least in the short term). Might want to be a little more gracious next time around! Can’t wait for the last game of next season at Autzen? Next years Oregon team is absolutely loaded and they might hang 60 on the pups! GO DUCKS! 🦆
Don’t worry, Lanning will be leaving Oregon any day. No one wants to stay.
@@SarkDawg wanta bet? : )
@@SarkDawg 😂.
NIL & portal, with out protective guardrails, will bring down college football. It’s all about money, forget a college education.
No it won't. It will split off into its own division. Like it has already done twice before.
Dude acts like Washington is the first to have this happen to them when Nick saban rarely started consecutive seasons with the same coordinators or ga's . We at Alabama get gutted every season.
Yep, ever year. Also, still won.
WE HAD SARK AND HE GOT STOLEN OUT UNDER US ALSO. YEAH SARK AND DEBOER. BEAT THAT.
We haven't been gutted like this in 17 years. It's going to hurt like we haven't hurt in a long time. Bama does not have the collectives like fsu or Texas, nor a coach like Nick or kirby. Just wait until signing day next year🫣
BOOHOO. I could coach half a roster of 5 star players. Give me a break!!
@smaimmigrationlawfirm no, no you couldn't. A bunch of premadonna's and who are you?
The loyalty should be to the school. Getting a degree. Not playing football and being paid.
Capitalism my guy!!
@@shallojalloh I know.
I'm with you my friend, but we're dinosaurs.
Will these schools start requiring players to sign binding contracts now lol? ugh what a mess.
Used to make them sit out a year . Worked real well
Maybe not the schools, but the NIL consortiums definitely. Sucks that you give a guy money for "endorsements" and he says screw you and takes the money and runs.
That’s my take as well, if you take a NIL deal then you must finish your eligibility at that school.
The next Don James couches 4 and a half hours south of UW and his name is Dan Lanning 🦆
Lanning will leave, too!
Lame Lanning says aggressive attitude and the Washington Huskies said BIG DEAL 😂😂😂😂 you ought to be ashamed of yourself saying Lame Lanning and Don James in the same sentence 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂hilarious
If not for bama, who?
Cope.
@@daniel_503 the chiefs.
Oregon can’t have the next Don James dipstick. Lmao, you Ducks are delusional. The little brother, me me me attitude is embarrassing.
Alabama fan here, We are in misery down here as well. I feel bad for your program and we are getting poached. Tampering from other schools, taking our best players. This is a nightmare
Tampering ? What does that even mean in this environment ?
Yeah, too bad they didn’t have a contingency plan already in place. A good internal promotion would’ve been perfect. Instead, it’s caused a massive domino affect. And it wouldn’t have matter if it was DeBoer or not. If it was Lanning, or Sark, or anyone else coach, except maybe Kiffin. Ole Miss wouldn’t have been as much of an allure, though 7-8 mil a year probably would’ve. The difference is that not every coach will move to Mississippi.
@@daddio159yep internal promotion would have sunk it a little slower, like urban leaving Ohio. You hit the nail on the head. Except that kiffin part hahaha
@@trails4all what do you mean, you think Ole Miss being open would’ve gotten Deboer to leave UW? I don’t think so. I do think he would’ve left for one of the big 5 though. Bama, Tex, OSU, Mich, USC. He might’ve even taken something like OK, but not sure. He was t into TAM, but that’s because he might’ve already have an inkling of Saban retiring.
@damienk2652 no,no, sorry. I thought you were talking kiffin to bama
No Loyalty!
UW is a stepping stone for coaches to bigger and better.
…and Arizona was a stepping stone to UW. There are probably 10-12 jobs that might be a step up from UW but there are 30+ above Arizona. Sad but is the reality of the business.
Big deal games will be played champion's will be crowned KING and money will be made and students will recieve diplomas and life will go on , BIG DEAL!!! WASHINGTON COULD WELL HAVE BEEN A 8-4 TEAM THIS LAST YEAR
... and kept Deboer
The allure of Bama is too much?
Mike Norvell says otherwise
He didn't get an offer. I Promise you, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE at the University of Alabama, be it Fan or Alumni, wanted Mike Norvell. He ain't it. Trust
Norvell sucks
@@someguy6212 I think u spelled "Alabama under DeBoer" incorrectly.
@@shallojalloh I would take DeBoer over Norvell. He's done more with less.
@someguy6212 | lol lol lol I see ur a stand up comedian.
Whose gonna tell him? Lol
Over rated carried by Penix... wont last more than two years, all about the money.
There you go. It came from SOFTY’s mouth, talking about (Oregon) the most hated rival. Not WAZZU😂😂😂. I’m just glad Washington one year wonder is over.😂😂😂
excuse me but the "one year wonder" was actually two years....and we beat you 3 times in that span...one at your place, one at our place, and one at a neutral site..... no excuses for your babbling
Fisch will also beat you guys!
The last time I checked, we’ve been to 2 CFP’s since the last time you did.
DaWgs will be back Quack fan. Might take a couple years.
Historically in pac12 lore the Huskies are the best of the 2 programs , more championships and titles just plain better than oregon , GO HUSKIES 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I live in Vancouver wa and I’ve never seen so much husky gear. Don’t worry, it will all go away (in shame) soon.
Oregon has the series lead over the pac12 era, even 12 straight wins recently. You can brag about your 3 wins all the way to begging for a bowl game. Back to the basement. 😂
Greed, greed, greed......he ruined the dreams and expectations of several young men who believed in him, and for what?? MONEY!! FAME!! How much money is enough Kalen? How much do you need to support your family? You had great success at Washington for 2 years, and the players and the town loved you and your staff.....doubt you will get that at Alabama
Well said…what hes going to get at Alabama is incredible scrutiny/pressure and criticism when he screws up. Hope he’s a top recruiter because Kirby Smart and Steve Sarkisian sure are. Don’t see this ending well for Deboer.
I reckon ol' Kalen will be fired within 3 seasons (at most) at Alabama, he better not come crawling back to Seattle.
@@eastsidebadger8416I'm an Alabama fan and Im already saying this you are absolutely right because it is not easy to recruit in the SEC
@@benjaminvalenti1242 No it definitely isn’t..Bama just lost one of their best recruiters to UGA.
@@wgriffin3460 He won’t..probably coach in the MAC
More Bama fans were there to meet Deboer's arrival than went to the WA spring training game. Bama will sell out the first Spring training game. Bama is serious about football.
Your right, very serious. A very wealthy football program with unique passionate fans. It's easy to hate them.
Get serious about losing. Y’all are done.
I’ll admit, we’ll likely get our a*ses whooped by Oregon next year. The roster is absolutely stacked. But ducks fans said the same thing this year and lost twice. 😂 Lanning ultimately made multiple boneheaded decisions that cost his team both games and THATS why he’s not in Alabama so we fully expect more of that next year. So when you guys come on here sounding cocky, rubbing in the losses we’ve endured the last week just remember you got smoked by a crippled, 50% cadaver QB and a team full of 3 star players. 🫢
I wouldn't say Smoked. Lol. We lost 3 times by a total of 9 points. That's not smoked. Smoked is when you guys lost by 21 to Michigan.
Ducks fans have never had any class. Wish we had won it all just to hold it over them. The O in Oregon is for 0 natties. win 3 and then you can talk trash Ducks.
@@smaimmigrationlawfirmhusky fans are putrid and horrendous to deal with. They think they’re this big time nation wide brand and they are not. Congrats on the used car salesman you got from Arizona.
Ted bundy was a husky and you’re an adidas school.
