Harshest scene in movie history: Littlefoot runs towards his own shadow, thinking it's his mom. The look on his face after realizing that she'll never be back is just so crushing.
Watching it as a kid, his mom's death totally wrecked me. As an adult, Littlefoot running towards his shadow was just the movie completely trying to ruin me at my core. Being driven into absolute delusion by grief and despair, hoping that his mom was alive, only to essentially witness her death all over again when he comes to his senses was so crushing. Even modern movies for adults don't really tackle these emotions or experiences as intensely as this.

This has got to be the most emotional and depressing children's film ever, more feels than Lion King and Bridge to Terabithia combined. I watched it yesterday and could not stop crying all the way through; tears of happiness and sadness....what a powerful film.
Littlefoot seeing his 'mother' as his shadow, then going up to it and licking it... Fuck, that has to be one of the most emotional scenes in any movie ever. (The music for that part is at 7:17 )
yeah but the Lion King scene only lasted 2-3 minutes of mourning... this whole scene is a full ten minutes of loss and grieving. And yes, I'm crying through every second of it

because as a kid it was nothing more than a cool fun adventure dinosaur movie but as an adult you understand the sadness, desperation of the situation and what exactly these five kids had to go through just to make it to safety and reunite with their families

When you're an adult, and your mother is pushing 60, aging more each year, you realize that one day she will eventually leave you, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.

This is for my dad who passed away on New Years Eve in 2022. He knew how much i love this series and listening to this music and the scene makes me think of that day when we lost him. RIP Dad

She really helped me cope with my autism and was such a caring, kind and loving dog. When Horner died, I was in Croatia on a short holiday. I was on a middle of a long walk in the hottest part of the day, and when read the news, somehow I instantly wanted to listen to the Land before time soundtrack, which is something I never done before, despite I love so much of Horners work. At Whispering winds, I almost lost it in the middle of the street, I hardy held back the crying. I was 25, but it was the first time I truly felt, that my childhood irreversebly passed away, and on that day, a part of it died (which wasnt true, since Horners music lives with us). I felt horrible. Now I am 33, I have a 2 years old daughter, and I cant wait to show her this diamond of my childhood, this masterpiece of animation, to watch it together. Life is a truly fucked up and weird thing, but I guess its beautiful because of these things.
This is the first time I've ever cried over a celebrity death. James Horners music has been such a intricately woven part of my life since childhood. His music was there to entertain, encourage, and comfort me as I grew up. One of the reasons I have such a passion for music. He has always been my favorite film composer. The depth of emotion he put into his works spoke to my soul on many levels. I cried several times listening to scores today, reminiscing good times.

Jesus no other film or music score hits me as hard as this. Watched the movie a few weeks ago as an adult. It had been about 27 years since I had last seen it and I wasn't prepared to see it through adult eyes. Couldn't stop crying and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. Don bluth bottled lightning with this film.

I am almost 35 on the 28th of this month. I just found out that the little girl who played ducky, her body was found on July 28th 1988, she was murdered by her father, and also her mother was murdered. Several months before this movie came out. I knew this movie was sad when I was 4 years old, but now I am in tears because now I know the true tragedy behind this movie. Rest in peace young one, people are savages. Your spirit lives on in all of us who grew up with this movie.
At first, Littlefoot only could think about his mother. He hardly noticed his hunger and forgot about the Great Valley and that he MUST somehow reach it. Then Littlefoot knew for certain that he WAS alone and that though the Great Valley was far away and the journey perilous, he would have to find his way, or the chain of life would be broken.
The first part of this music encapsulates the scenario perfectly: After the sharptooth battle, Littlefoot is separated from his mother, and searches for her, believing that she will be able to protect him, like always. He is completely oblivious of just how much Sharptooth did to her.
I listened to this after my dog died last week, god what such a teary moment but at least he's not suffering anymore. This song saved my life. All we need is a big cry

Oh my god... I'm not entirely sure what brought me here but I am so glad to have given this a listen to after so many long years. I can still remember the dialogue shared between Littlefoot and his Mother before she passes away with this music in the background... such a heartbreaking scene. I wonder what kind of person I would be today had I not been exposed to such art.
This track is so powerful for me. It reminds me of when my Mum and Dad divorced. I was 3 and I would watch this at my mums, day after day, crying my eyes out. Through depression it comforted me, thank you James Horner. Thank you very much.

It's not fair, for someone like him to be gone. No one can rival James Horner when it comes to beautiful, warm, peaceful, fun, and memorable music. Except for John Williams and Alan Silvestri. His style was unique, and incredible. So, thank you Mr. James Horner. Thank you for creating such sweet and beautiful musical scores throughout the years. Thank you for entertaining me as a child, for making me scared in Aliens, for making me sad and at the same time uplifted in Titanic. And so on and so forth, we'll miss you.
***** Horner used to be friends with Jerry's daughter and Jamie used to come visit and watch Jerry in the studio recording scores during the late 70's. That's where Jamie got some tricks of the trade out of Jerry and you'll definitely recognize some of that Goldsmith touch in several Horner scores.
I've been reading through the comments section here and I completely understand what everyone feels. I lost my grandma last night 24 hours ago and I feel so much emotional agony, extreme loneliness, sadness, fear, denial, anger, counterfactual thoughts and yet fond childhood memories and all the moments we got to enjoy and cherish together. When she and grandpa used to take care of me when I was a kid, I loved dinosaurs and this movie was at the forefront of it all. The music makes me cry every time I hear it and I'm 22 it captures so many strong emotions I can't help it. You're never too old to cry and you're never to old to reminisce childhood memories. It felt so long ago and yet it didn't seem that long ago. Thanks for sharing your stories, everyone. I find comfort in knowing I'm not alone in my loss. I'll continue to be strong and fight until I draw my last breath just like my grandma. Love you, grandma forever and always ❤
This is the only soundtrack that will move me to tears every time without fail. Not only because of the composer’s and the youngest cast member’s death, but because of how beautifully tragic the melody is. Even when I grew up with this movie I would become emotional just imagining how I would live without my parents like Littlefoot.
I am 17 and I am still like all 14 movies and TV series, this song is so beautiful and remembers me that the circule of life is real, when I am going to perish at the age of +80 like any normal human, I want to wake up in the Great Valley like an apatosaurus and live all the eternity in that place, that is my dreamed paradise after all the life, the perfect paradise, If only was real.
I am a Millennial in my 30's. I am soooo glad I grew up in the era that I did. Nothing before nor after the 80s and 90s tops the innovation of movies, music, and entertainment. I have children and feel sorry for them. They will never know...
I'm almost 40 now. This piece will always cut me to the core. I think this was the first movie that really dealt with death, like the 80's and 90's kids lion king. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch it again when I lose my mom.

As much as it is a tragedy that Mr. Horner is no longer with us, another tragedy happened around the time this movie was being produced. Judith_Barsi, the voice of Ducky, was murdered by her father. If you read her Wiki page it is fucking sad as shit.

I used to watch all those movies as a kid. Not much has remained, except for the music. When you are a kid, only the movie matters, so when after 10 years the music has remained, that means how powerful the music is
And they all grew up together in the valley, generation upon generation, each passing on to the next. The tale of their ancestors' journey to the valley..... long ago.
I love this score!! Sad in the beginning -- I was almost tearing up, too, but I kept thinking "he's just got to get to his grandparents!" The comic relief helped some too (the young flyers fighting over the berries, Ducky's cute way of introducing himself and trying to cheer Littlefoot up). Still pretty here though!
Back in the 90s, I watched the film for the first time: Littlefoot just lost his beloved momma, and then this music came... right in the feels, and I'm crying honestly. I'm thinking of my mother more and more and more. This is why this classic animated movie has a beautiful plot yet is sad, which makes it memorable. The soundtrack has a song leitmotif of Diana Ross' If We Hold On Together, which literally makes me sad. Thanks for uploading James Horner's music for TLBT. I love the original film.

true, older movies like hunchback of notre dame and beauty and the beast, the villain gets thrown off of a castle/church tower. There are themes of racism and hints of sexual scenes, which you only notice when you rewatch them as an adult. We baby kids for too long nowadays. Even in tarzan, you can see the shadow of the villain hanging by the neck on some vines. Its not graphic at all, just like little foots mom. This movie was my favourite as a child. loved the whole soundtrack and every scene
Disagree, kids are exposed to way more violence in media nowadays, and also, The Land Before Time was supposed to be scarier but they had to trim down scenes with Sharptooth to make it less scary for kids. And this was back in the “old days”.

It's bizarre to me, sometimes, that this movie actually made me sad for creatures who died millions of years before I was here. In a way, 2021 earth defense measures exist because these creatures died. It's almost like they laid down their lives for us. This is one of the best lessons I learned from this movie, when watching as a child and processing as an adult (I'm 40 years old) Maybe we'll all meet again in the great beyond

This song is so sad, it's basically my childhood. However I'm not saddened by the film itself, I used to watch The Land Before Time all the time when I was a kid. When I watch this film it makes me think of my mother and how she would always be over my shoulder while I was sitting on the floor watching the film. I remember I had the game on PlayStation 1, and I couldn't jump over the river, my mum Sat down and helped me play it... We never got over the river, we were both terrible, but she helped me anyway. I have subconsciously connected my memories of my mum when I was a kid with this song :'(

The Land Before Time wasn't afraid of being harsh for child viewers. The loss of a loved one- your guardian, being on your own, braving the dangers of the world, uncertain if you will reach salvation. The first time I heard James Horner's music was this film, 48 Hours, and Commando. I was surprised to find he did the soundtrack for Avatar. Thank you, James.
This song, this one freaking song, is what brought me here, 16 years after seeing the film as a tiny lil thing. I was just enjoying a beer when this tune began playing in my head, it's so beautiful. Solemn at points, but also hopeful and uplifting at points.

James Horner was my favorite composer with this, Field of Dreams, and A Beautiful Mind being some of my favorites. I'm no classical connoisseur by any means but I always thought of him as a modern Prokofiev. One of my earlier memories discovering my love of music was attending a "Peter and the Wolf" puppet show at school and being totally mesmerized by what I was hearing, like music suddenly just made sense to me in that moment. I hear that same power in everything James Horner did with similar elements being used. He had such a knack for dynamics and making you feel one thing and then another with such fluidity. Such a talented man.
Until today, the last time I saw the movie was a teen in the beginning of the 2010’s. I felt triggered to come back to the movie due to my nostalgia for this music

I just found out that the little girl who played ducky, her body was found on July 28th 1988, she was murdered by her father, and also her mother was murdered. Several months before this movie came out. I knew this movie was sad when I was 4 years old, but now I am in tears because now I know the true tragedy behind this movie. Rest in peace young one, people are savages. Your spirit lives on in all of us who grew up with this movie.

At first, Littlefoot only could think about his mother. He hardly noticed his hunger and forgot about the Great Valley and that he MUST somehow reach it.
Then Littlefoot knew for certain that he WAS alone and that though the Great Valley was far away and the journey perilous, he would have to find his way, or the chain of life would be broken.

The first part of this music encapsulates the scenario perfectly: After the sharptooth battle, Littlefoot is separated from his mother, and searches for her, believing that she will be able to protect him, like always. He is completely oblivious of just how much Sharptooth did to her.
I listened to this after my dog died last week, god what such a teary moment but at least he's not suffering anymore. This song saved my life. All we need is a big cry

Oh my god... I'm not entirely sure what brought me here but I am so glad to have given this a listen to after so many long years. I can still remember the dialogue shared between Littlefoot and his Mother before she passes away with this music in the background... such a heartbreaking scene. I wonder what kind of person I would be today had I not been exposed to such art.
This track is so powerful for me. It reminds me of when my Mum and Dad divorced. I was 3 and I would watch this at my mums, day after day, crying my eyes out.

I've been reading through the comments section here and I completely understand what everyone feels. I lost my grandma last night 24 hours ago and I feel so much emotional agony, extreme loneliness, sadness, fear, denial, anger, counterfactual thoughts and yet fond childhood memories and all the moments we got to enjoy and cherish together. When she and grandpa used to take care of me when I was a kid, I loved dinosaurs and this movie was at the forefront of it all. The music makes me cry every time I hear it and I'm 22 it captures so many strong emotions I can't help it. You're never too old to cry and you're never to old to reminisce childhood memories. It felt so long ago and yet it didn't seem that long ago. Thanks for sharing your stories, everyone. I find comfort in knowing I'm not alone in my loss. I'll continue to be strong and fight until I draw my last breath just like my grandma. Love you, grandma forever and always ❤

This is the only soundtrack that will move me to tears every time without fail. Not only because of the composer’s and the youngest cast member’s death, but because of how beautifully tragic the melody is. Even when I grew up with this movie I would become emotional just imagining how I would live without my parents like Littlefoot.

Just how simple the tune is is enough to sadden us all. Especially during such a scene as Littlefoot's Mother's death.

I love this score!! Sad in the beginning -- I was almost tearing up, too, but I kept thinking "he's just got to get to his grandparents!" The comic relief helped some too (the young flyers fighting over the berries, Ducky's cute way of introducing himself and trying to cheer Littlefoot up). Still pretty here though!

Back in the 90s, I watched the film for the first time: Littlefoot just lost his beloved momma, and then this music came... right in the feels, and I'm crying honestly. I'm thinking of my mother more and more and more. This is why this classic animated movie has a beautiful plot yet is sad, which makes it memorable. The soundtrack has a song leitmotif of Diana Ross' If We Hold On Together, which literally makes me sad.

You can't make movies like this anymore because it would considered too violent and tragic for younger audiences.
true, older movies like hunchback of notre dame and beauty and the beast, the villain gets thrown off of a castle/church tower. There are themes of racism and hints of sexual scenes, which you only notice when you rewatch them as an adult. We baby kids for too long nowadays. Even in tarzan, you can see the shadow of the villain hanging by the neck on some vines. Its not graphic at all, just like little foots mom. This movie was my favourite as a child. loved the whole soundtrack and every scene

Disagree, kids are exposed to way more violence in media nowadays, and also, The Land Before Time was supposed to be scarier but they had to trim down scenes with Sharptooth to make it less scary for kids. And this was back in the “old days”.

It's bizarre to me, sometimes, that this movie actually made me sad for creatures who died millions of years before I was here.
In a way, 2021 earth defense measures exist because these creatures died. It's almost like they laid down their lives for us.
This is one of the best lessons I learned from this movie, when watching as a child and processing as an adult (I'm 40 years old)

This song is so sad, it's basically my childhood. However I'm not saddened by the film itself, I used to watch The Land Before Time all the time when I was a kid. When I watch this film it makes me think of my mother and how she would always be over my shoulder while I was sitting on the floor watching the film. I remember I had the game on PlayStation 1, and I couldn't jump over the river, my mum Sat down and helped me play it... We never got over the river, we were both terrible, but she helped me anyway. I have subconsciously connected my memories of my mum when I was a kid with this song :'(

The Land Before Time wasn't afraid of being harsh for child viewers. The loss of a loved one- your guardian, being on your own, braving the dangers of the world, uncertain if you will reach salvation. The first time I heard James Horner's music was this film, 48 Hours, and Commando. I was surprised to find he did the soundtrack for Avatar. Thank you, James.

This song, this one freaking song, is what brought me here, 16 years after seeing the film as a tiny lil thing. I was just enjoying a beer when this tune began playing in my head, it's so beautiful. Solemn at points, but also hopeful and uplifting at points.

The tears in my eyes right now show so much more than I'll ever be able to describe. Holy shit, this movie, man! Forget the sequels!! This is, and will always be, the only LBT movie.
I stopped watching after Stone of Cold Fire. And you were right, the sequels are dead to me.
James Horner was my favorite composer with this, Field of Dreams, and A Beautiful Mind being some of my favorites. I'm no classical connoisseur by any means but I always thought of him as a modern Prokofiev. One of my earlier memories discovering my love of music was attending a "Peter and the Wolf" puppet show at school and being totally mesmerized by what I was hearing, like music suddenly just made sense to me in that moment. I hear that same power in everything James Horner did with similar elements being used. He had such a knack for dynamics and making you feel one thing and then another with such fluidity. Such a talented man.
