The studio heads tried to fuck the end up by having them stationed in Alaska. Chance survives and they showed them in an alternate scene in an Arctic outpost. By the way, I've never seen another movie attempt to show a guy hit in the head by a shotgun like this one. It's almost impossible to pull off and come off as what the viewer might expect as authentic (lest they were Navy SEALs who know what open head cavitations really look like), but they did a good job with effects and editing for normal folk. There's a sharp cut to him falling down so the audience doesn't get a lot of time to critique the effect at the moment. Of course, you can after you've seen it a ton of times. The blood splatter and black dot (his skull hole) had to hit him in the forehead just right. I wonder how many times it took for that dot to stick to him right in the forehead.

The best part of this scene is at 6:20 when they juxtapose Richard’s thoughts of bungee jumping to John’s reflecting on the guy getting shot. Richard is experiencing the ultimate rush while his partner is losing his mind reflecting on the dangerous totality of the situation they’ve gotten themselves into. What a masterful piece of cinema

It's not just the car chase either. Willem Dafoe has a great part, as does Robert Downey, Sr.; yes "Senior." Someone posted that the music used for the car chase seemed out of place. Wang Chung was a cutting edge/new wave band in the mid 80's. Given the edgy feel of the movie being set in L.A., it was totally appropriate.

The Seven-Ups also had one great chase, of all the movies I have seen The Seven-Ups, Ronin and this movie are my favorite ones, back then they sure knew how to make a proper action movie.

When I studied in South Africa from 84 to 87 my friends once kidded me about American's craze for car chases. They didn't get the appeal. I remember telling them about To Live and Die in LA, which had just come out. My point was that car chases could be incredibly good. The whole film matches it. Most people grasp (at least instinctively) that going the wrong way down the LA freeway was an allegory for Chance's entire approach to law enforcement. The criminal side of lawmen is timeless, going back to the sheriffs in the wild west, who often doubled as henchmen for cattle barons. This movie modernized and dramatized the combination of good and evil in law enforcement masterfully.
The reason why people from many places will criticize America car chases in movies is because their culture does not have cool cars. The cars in German culture and Italian culture are for wealthy people. So a V8 Italian car will cost the price of a house were as American V8 can be driven by an electrician from Utah.

This blows Connection out of the water and then some. And that is my favorite film by this director. The sequel to connection was also pretty good but not as good as the original. I'll have to concede your point on Bullitt though. Don't think Steve McQueen burning up the streets of San Fran in a Fastback will ever be topped. Especially now with Hollywood's obsession with CGI. And that makes me want to watch Bullitt right now

Unfortunately, I saw it after it became a famous film and knew about the chase before I watched it, so, like you, I was watching to see if it measured up to Bullitt. Here was Popeye, driving through what looked like an obstacle course, hell bent on catching a foul and loathsome murderer who killed women and policemen. I remember a TH-cam commentator pointed out that Chance wanted to die. This scene, with the imagery of suicide around 6:22, and the look in Chance's eyes afterwards, seems to confirm it. Yes, in some sense he wants to keep breathing, but the adrenal rush of dying enthralled Chance. What a great fucking movie this is.
He got his wish when he caught a 12 gauge shotgun blast to the forehead. I have to tell you, I was not expecting that to happen when I saw the film for the first time.
The imagery isn’t suicide. It’s bungee jumping, and it’s referencing Chance’s getting the ultimate thrill while the other guy is thinking about the guy who just got killed

i just took another look, everything seems to be correct, correct drivers side and words can be read, im going to chalk it up to some weird fucking shit they did in the 80s where they swapped what side the traffic drove on in whatever bum fuck city this was shot in.
It's that way just to mess with your head. It jumbles up your brain to try to get you into the Chase's headspace. Works really well too.. You kinda feel like something is wrong without being able to pick it out right away.

Oh, it can be brutal. Quite regular to have 5-10 car pile-ups on LA/OC freeways that take 5 lane (in one direction) fwys down to just the shoulder, traffic goes 5 mph bumper to bumper for hours. Your commute, already long, triples. That's why I escaped to eastern WA. We still only have a rush hour, that's right half hour in the morning, and half hour in the evening on the only fwy.
The movie, the soundtrack, (Wang Chungs best work) the actors made this movie an underground classic among underground classics. This and Blade Runner never cease I amaze me everytime I watch them.

The Chevy makes me think of the used Impala I bombed around in when I got my license in 1985. I remember my dad saying, “Now take it easy, ‘cause this is a lotta car.” Glory days of steel, V8 engine, a carburetor you had to take care not to flood, and a big old engine roar. Great car for making out in, too. It was good to be a kid in the 80s.

I saw this film the week it opened. Most memorable to me was it didn't make me think what a great chase scene I'm watching. I was in sympathetic fear for Vukovich. I kept thinking, "Let me outta here!" Character and action combined to make this a riveting scene.

I love how it keeps getting more desperate. This whole movie takes a complete left turn and goes completely nuts from here on out. One of the greatest movies I've ever seen and I recommend it to everyone.
Easily the best car chase sequence of the decade from the man who had perhaps the best car chase sequence a year earlier in The French Connection. Harrowing experience for everyone involved, too. Director of Photography refused to film it and both Pankow and Petermen were really in the car that entire time. Friedken shot this at the end of the shoot so that if something happened to one of the principal actors, the movie would be mostly finished.
Interesting how John Pankow and his brother James Pankow have each appeared in two of the greatest alltime car chase scenes, this and "Stay the Night."
At the end there when he goes against traffic, All the other vehicles are going the 'wrong' way. His car is the only one going the ' right' way..., Unless , they were in England and not LA

As far as anxiety goes this has to be the greatest car chase of all time! The Seven Ups and Bullit are in the conversation but I didn't feel the dread like I did in this.

The tracking shot that follows the two cars as they approach the end of the bridge is AMAZING. That required perfect setup and timing.

I remember a TH-cam commentator pointed out that Chance wanted to die. This scene, with the imagery of suicide around 6:22, and the look in Chance's eyes afterwards, seems to confirm it. Yes, in some sense he wants to keep breathing, but the adrenal rush of dying enthralled Chance. What a great fucking movie this is.
He got his wish when he caught a 12 gauge shotgun blast to the forehead. I have to tell you, I was not expecting that to happen when I saw the film for the first time.
The imagery isn’t suicide. It’s bungee jumping, and it’s referencing Chance’s getting the ultimate thrill while the other guy is thinking about the guy who just got killed

i just took another look, everything seems to be correct, correct drivers side and words can be read, im going to chalk it up to some weird fucking shit they did in the 80s where they swapped what side the traffic drove on in whatever bum fuck city this was shot in.
I noticed that the first time I saw that. From what I know, Friedkin was forced to do that, but I don't remember the reasons why.

It's that way just to mess with your head. It jumbles up your brain to try to get you into the Chase's headspace. Works really well too.. You kinda feel like something is wrong without being able to pick it out right away.
Wish more people knew about this flick man, one of the best crime thrillers ever made. It’s just when bad gets to worse and shows what a true “hero” cop would be like; all badass playing by his own rule and absolutely no morality

Oh, it can be brutal. Quite regular to have 5-10 car pile-ups on LA/OC freeways that take 5 lane (in one direction) fwys down to just the shoulder, traffic goes 5 mph bumper to bumper for hours. Your commute, already long, triples. That's why I escaped to eastern WA. We still only have a rush hour, that's right half hour in the morning, and half hour in the evening on the only fwy.
Funny how at the end everybody is driving the wrong way except for those two.

The movie, the soundtrack, (Wang Chungs best work) the actors made this movie an underground classic among underground classics. This and Blade Runner never cease I amaze me everytime I watch them.

The Chevy makes me think of the used Impala I bombed around in when I got my license in 1985. I remember my dad saying, “Now take it easy, ‘cause this is a lotta car.” Glory days of steel, V8 engine, a carburetor you had to take care not to flood, and a big old engine roar. Great car for making out in, too. It was good to be a kid in the 80s.

Saw this when it was released in 85 I was 17 years old this scene was amazing on the big screen.
I saw this film the week it opened. Most memorable to me was it didn't make me think what a great chase scene I'm watching. I was in sympathetic fear for Vukovich. I kept thinking, "Let me outta here!" Character and action combined to make this a riveting scene.

Best car chase in film history!, 80’s cop films like this were just the business. Whoever directed this was a genius. I have this on DVD and watch it from time to time, a classic, gutsy and gritty. They just don’t make them like this anymore.

One of the most memorable and best produced movie car chases ever. When I saw this scene the first time, I constantly tried to push an imaginary break pedal. Jason Bourne movies borrowed a lot from this (especially the "wrong lane" idea).

William Friedkin is a master of car chasing scenes
I love how it keeps getting more desperate. This whole movie takes a complete left turn and goes completely nuts from here on out. One of the greatest movies I've ever seen and I recommend it to everyone.
Easily the best car chase sequence of the decade from the man who had perhaps the best car chase sequence a year earlier in The French Connection. Harrowing experience for everyone involved, too. Director of Photography refused to film it and both Pankow and Petermen were really in the car that entire time. Friedken shot this at the end of the shoot so that if something happened to one of the principal actors, the movie would be mostly finished.

Interesting how John Pankow and his brother James Pankow have each appeared in two of the greatest alltime car chase scenes, this and "Stay the Night."

I think six years after this movie came out, director Kathryn Bigelow decided to pay homage to this chase scene by reusing the same two chase vehicles in her movie Point Break. A tan Chevy and a burgundy Lincoln.

As far as anxiety goes this has to be the greatest car chase of all time! The Seven Ups and Bullit are in the conversation but I didn't feel the dread like I did in this.
