That original 'if you dont like it change it, and if you dont have it proxy it' attitude was why i loved old Warhammer, and why i dislike how new Warhammer is presented.
Fun fact: As a subtle nod to Games Workshop's original logo, the lettering used in the coat of arms for the Rogue Trader house Von Valancius in the video game Rogue Trader uses the same font. The house coat of arms is two V's in the same style as GW's original logo.
Character advancement that allows for Stat increases with caps on those stats is a fundamental part of the GW skirmish games Necromunda, Gorka Morka and Mordheim.
I always thought that Gorkamorka was just a single word, I could be wrong, often I am like I was with Slaan earlier because it is apparently Slann . I live and apparently don’t learn…
Hey snipe and wib, weird outta place comment but here goes, it’s been 5 years since I first painted warhammer with the know no fear starter set and did terribly painted marines and yet I felt so good about them I posted them on twitter and tagged you guys and I remembered wib responded to it saying they were good looking boys, since then alot has happened and last year I rekindled my love for warhammer and redescovered my favourite space marine Legion the blood angles and even 5 years later I’m still listening to your videos in the background as I’m now painting the red of the sons of sanguinius instead of the blue of the smurfy boys and I just wanted to thank you guys for sticking around long enough for me to leave and come back. Lots of love and for the emperor
Yeah, I was surprised how well "Avarice" and "Hunger" work as alignments. Not every creature is necessarily motivated by nobility or wickedness. And "Neutral" doesn't always carry the same connotation as "wants money" or "HONGRI".
judging from how stones and bodys get mangled by even slow flowing rivers and channels those minis in the channel most likely turned into rounded zink lead pebbles....that means if you find a lead pebble in the area you technically can use it in a game of warhammer since it is an actual official miniature with rules, just a damaged one.
I really thought the final bowman was going to be called Elektra, as a Little Sisters of Purification reference, and then Megatron blindsided me into a spit-take.
16:49 I know demon and daemon are supposed to be pronounced the same, but when I say that I started a new daemon on my Linux box, I pronounce it differently so that people don't get confused and want to *exorcise* my machine. This pronunciation, which Wikipedia lists as a valid pronunciation for "Daemon (computing)", carries over to when I read Warhammer.
There's a simple and clean kind of a feel to models of this era. They're something you get with a single glance, no pretensions of anything else. There is a charm to that, but the clearness is also just enjoyable in a way. Honest. They are kind of like the lead equivalent of the rough and sketchy rpg art from way back, such as seen here. Sure it's technically piddly compared to modern work, but it also feels approachable. It's just a thing someone made, an effort. No attempt to make it something fancy or bigger.
Once people stop regularly using models they gain a certain charm. It's why fantasy models go for like 5x prices on eBay, and why gw is ruining that by bringing back the exact same kits in Old World...
Agreed. I really enjoy the simple design of the early models, as they had distict silhouettes which could be identified on the fly from 6 feet away on a table top (unlike today's models; looking at you Primaris Marines) The fact the sculptors were creating architypes of races and classes (a wizard had a pointy hat and a beard etc...) meant they had the freedom to create unique and more grounded models. I think this is why games like Mordhiem are still as popular with the gaming community, as they feel both fantastic and grounded at the same time. Similarly, like the early computer games of the time, with their basic graphics, it left alot to the players imagination which allowed people to imprint their own stories into the models. As much as I love the modern versions of these models, there will always be a special corner of my heart for these older sculpts.
Kinda like old people. My grandmother was a sweetie but she also used terms like "colored folk". Could bake you any type of cookie but found 8 revolvers stashed around her house after she passed.
I’m three Pan-Galactic Gargle blasters down and I agree entirely. Edit; what is English, what is numbers? My pan- galactic gargle blaster recipe: 1 part London dry gin 1 part limoncello 2 barspoons PURE mint extract 1/4r tbsp Lemonade KoolAid (or more depending on preference) Must be US version. Mix in glass. Top off with gaswßer (soda water). Drink Say bye bye to the world, embrace Slaanesh/ Ceogorach.
Warhammer 1st edition had night elves, which eventually became WFB's Dark Elves. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans allegedly began life as a rejected Warhammer RTS. After 2.5 games and a few novels of ensuring Warcraft is its own thing and separate of any Warhammer roots, they Introduce Night Elves... ...this amuses me far more than it should...
Oh yeah, I remember when the Warhammer 25th anniversary issue of White Dwarf came out featuring the revamped Harry model--I think it even contained an updated version of that Ziggurat of Doom scenario, too! Having only been into Warhammer for a year or two at the time, kid me felt like I was glimpsing ancient mysterious relics, haha.
Splendid episode. I'd love to see an episode dedicated to the history of games workshop history as a company. I found especially the "backstory" section in this video interesting and entertaining.
I wanna give you a billion Victory Points for using the Dark Omen theme tune music during the battle encounter demonstration. That rumbling tense anthem is deep in my memory stats.
Great video, lovely message at the end about creative endeavors. Always love seeing the early days of properties before they truly found themselves. Appreciate your hard word.
I'm really happy to see this, as there isn't much on the first couple editions around, and I've been really wanting to do Vengeance of the Lichemaster (Since it's the first appearance of the Skaven) for a while now. If I ever play Lizardmen I might have to name one of them Rip in his honor, we salute you!
My Warhammer army from this time was Skeletons, but Japanese Skeletons. QT Models had a range of Samurai and such like, and produced alternate heads. I loved this edition.
I can appreciate that, in a world of miniature ranges mashed together, deeply flawed rules and other such uncertainties, there is still just literally Italy in there.
I'm honestly surprised how much of Warhammer 1st Edition still exists across the various games today. For reference, Ld, Int, Cl, and WP are still actively in use with GW systems, thanks to Necromunda's current edition, and honestly the entire bar looks quite similar to an underhive ganger of the Houses.
i just wanna say that the bit of motivational talk wib says at the end has now made me almost cry twice in two days as a recent game design graduate, thank you both
I started with 1st Edition and 2nd Edition. I got a strategy banmed world wide and lead thw change in 3rd Edition. In 2nd edition you could equip Watgear. War gear was not limited to Race. The deployment was simple with 12 to 24 inches on the deployment. Eldar scouts,on Jet,Bikes with Power Fists. You setup 2x3 squads of scouts in the non deployment on the enemy side. You could wipe out all enemy vehicles.
Your videos are what got me into the retro side of the hobby, also I'm the same person who left the comment about laserburn that led to the video about it, turns out I'm trans, my new name is Emily!
Excellent, very detailed video. A fascinating look back. Another book that would be of interest to you is "Warhammer siege", as it also contains a lengthy section on sieges in 40k, essentially making it the precursor to city fight etc. If you want, I can lend one to you.
This was probably your best video. Well done. I am actually amazed with how recognisable the rules were to modern warhammer, you rarely see that with a franchise that old just look at the first edition of D&D. I was amazed with how similar the roleplay part of the system was to the later warhammer fantasy roleplay system. I feel like you could easily this WFRP 0 edition. I don't know if you ever looked at the first edition of fantasy roleplay but it is very similar, just more fleshed out. But seriously great video.
26:49 As someone who just got done with a session of D&D where my players made clever use of game mechanics to avoid fighting my lovable undead monstrosity made of various fish parts named Chumley before watching, I felt this very deep in my GM-ing soul
So, TH-cam’s ad algorithm seems to be developing either a dark sense of humour or is becoming rather sarcastic as when Wib mentioned fish getting lead poisoning the video cut to an advert for Just Eat with Christina Aguilera saying “yummy”
damn haven't even started watching this beforehand already acclaimed gem of a video and I was expecting something of like 10 or so. . .but I am utterly delighted to see it will be 45 minutes of pure enjoyment watching this 🎉🎉
"... it is more like lint." 😄😄😄 Thanks for another fun video; a great trip in to the origens of Warhammer. That C19 Lizardman is still a cool looking mini. It looks so self-confident. And the coveted Stormcast is a very cool big lad. "Balrogs have wings, eh? You Tolkien to me? I don't see anyone else here; you must be Tolkien to me."
The release of this and 2ed were gamechangers. A miniature fantasy wargamer's Woodstock. I have very recently used 1ed rpg rules for dungeon crawling. The lack of charts, lore, and the prescriptive approach which was to come is immensely liberating. Its surprising how quickly and effectively the imagination fills in the blanks.
This is honestly pretty similar to modern day warhammer, I've only had the chance to play 2 matches of AoS and it's genuinely shockingly close to the stripped back version I'm being taught (we're forgo-ing warscrolls etc for the meantime so I can grasp the bare basics, then slowly introducing more and more mechanics until I'm playing the full game. I'm essentially playing the tutorial)
I actually had an almost identical experience when nabbing my copy. About £90 to get each book separately or like £300 for the complete in box set. That box is cool but still...
Great video. Honestly this answers a lot of questions that GW never really answer in their PR version of their own history. It's always fascinating to me how deeply interconnected fantasy fiction, table top RPGs, CRPGs, JRPGs, fantasy trading card games and wargamming all were, drawing off each other and forming the recognisable ecosystem we have today.
Oh hey that back and forth in melee was sorta brought back for kill team! both players roll their attacks and then alternate either hitting with a success or using it to cancel out an opponents success
29:20 I did work out how the currency system works (and it does make more sense laid out on a chart.) there are three coins: Crowns (Gold), Shillings (Silver), and Pennies (Brass). There are 20 shillings in a crown, and 12 pennies in a shilling (which means that a crown has 240 pennies). The format for writing how much cash one has is written like "2 1/2", which translates to 2 crowns, 1 shilling, and 2 pennies (gold in front, first half of the fraction is shillings, and the second half is pennies). Hope that helps anyone looking into this version of the game!
Kind of floored how strikingly similar the basics of these combat rules are to modern AoS/40K, like it is recognizably warhammer from the beginning and I think that’s neat
Great video guys. I keep seeing odd old miniatures on Facebook marketplace and thinking of your videos. Also I used to work at Stonehenge so instantly bought a copy of WD issue 43 after seeing the cover. ❤❤❤❤
Merry Christmas to you both. Fantastic (pun intended) video. Great to see the origins of our favorite second mortgage hobby and how similar it is to the modern game in so many ways. Looking forward to seeing you both in the next videos in 2024.
I still have two of the rule books. Lost the third somewhere in the shadows of time. Ahhh those days of sitting with my school pals of a Saturday playing on our living room floors. Happy times. Good to see Snipey looking well.
A fourty minute long Codex Compliant! Thanks to the both of you, I can put off calling the Queenfather Nest Fleet for another day :3 _"...it's a sloppy amateurish piece of work that needs rewriting..."_ The nineteen seventies, the twenty-twenties, same thing. Warhammer. Warhammer never changes.
Snipe's looking great, really digging the hairstyle. I would buy a reprint of this in a heartbeat, after so many years of having to use sometimes three different books to find my army rules and a core rulebook I appreciate, and only play, games that use one to two books that have everything you need to know in them (like LotR)
... Wait a fucking second; that review in White Dwarf was written by *Joe Dever*? Small world. He's the creator of the CYOA series "Lone Wolf" which he ended up creating while connecting with artist Gary Chalk working as a warehouse manager for GW in the 80's. A series known for it's long-running friendly competition with Fighting Fantasy, and which is now being reprinted.
brian ansell sadly passed away just a day or two ago - RIP, brother. side note - 5:52: I didn't know that Joe Dever (Lone Wolf) used to write for White Dwarf?? Coolfax.
Excellent video guys. Loved it. Now, are you finally ready to do a Codex Compliant on the GREATEST Codex of all time (*cough* Chaos 3.5 *cough* *cough*)? C'mon, bite the bullet. 😂
Neat
Character advancement that allows for Stat increases with caps on those stats is a fundamental part of the GW skirmish games Necromunda, Gorka Morka and Mordheim.
modern necromunda even keeps the four different "leadership" stats!
I always thought that Gorkamorka was just a single word, I could be wrong, often I am like I was with Slaan earlier because it is apparently Slann . I live and apparently don’t learn…
So you could theoretically roll a character who's only skill is "Transvestite" and who's alignment is "Hungry"
Highly relatable. He just like me fr fr
Dying to a single arrow from a Goblin in the first round of combat in the game. That's my entire MERP experience.
The good ol' earwax removal?
@@CallioNyx Were I allowed last words, they would have been "oh, oh bother, I've got something in my eye..."
I think MERP is the sound you make when getting sniped by a goblin archer in the first round lol
A 45 minute Codex Compliant, What a treat!
It is very good to see Snipe's hair coming back in so nicely.
"In a war it would side with the insects", nice to see you channelling bill bailey
I love that the plural for "Manfish" is "Menfish".
Avarice and Hunger make a lot of sense as alignments. Especially in a game with dragons and wild animals.
Yeah, I was surprised how well "Avarice" and "Hunger" work as alignments. Not every creature is necessarily motivated by nobility or wickedness. And "Neutral" doesn't always carry the same connotation as "wants money" or "HONGRI".
Hunger kind of carried forward for the Ogre Kingdoms in 6th through to 8th as well.
lol I think Hunger and Avarice made this video
As a person in my mid-sixties, this brought back so many memories of the early days of RPGs.
You should do a mini full batrap with 1st Ed rules would be interesting to see what it was like.
Very much this!
Also agree. Please Do This
judging from how stones and bodys get mangled by even slow flowing rivers and channels those minis in the channel most likely turned into rounded zink lead pebbles....that means if you find a lead pebble in the area you technically can use it in a game of warhammer since it is an actual official miniature with rules, just a damaged one.

No, the names are reference to The Great Escape. The three names are the codenames of the tunnels.
@nikoladedic6623 Ah, yes, the famous Great Escape tunnel...Megatron. How foolish of me to miss such an obvious reference.
In all seriousness though, the phrase "Any Tom, Dick or Harry" to refer to a bunch of generic people predates The Great Escape by centuries.
16:49 I know demon and daemon are supposed to be pronounced the same, but when I say that I started a new daemon on my Linux box, I pronounce it differently so that people don't get confused and want to *exorcise* my machine. "You can barely call that fluff, more like, lint" 😂😅❤👍
You sir, made me spit coffee out out mid sip with that one! Well done. 😂❤👍
These ancient models always have a weird charm. Like they are objectively bad, but also really neat
Very much objects of their time haha . You’re right about the primitive charm they have though .

Five beers in i find your comment, Cheers to you good sir!
I’m three Pan-Galactic Gargle blasters down and I agree entirely.

My pan- galactic gargle blaster recipe:
1 part London dry gin

2 barspoons PURE mint extract
1/4r tbsp Lemonade KoolAid (or more depending on preference) Must be US version.
Mix in glass.
Top off with gaswßer (soda water).

I like that the scenarios for the Characters book use "Ath Cliath" as a town name, which is just the Irish name for Dublin
9:21 I love the correction stating that their rule is "a foul lie!", apparently erratas had personality in the 80s XD
I honestly didn't expect this video to get me a little teary eyed at the end.
Love seeing elements at the start of Warhammer that help make WFRP the flavour that it is (Critical hits)
Oh yeah, I remember when the Warhammer 25th anniversary issue of White Dwarf came out featuring the revamped Harry model--I think it even contained an updated version of that Ziggurat of Doom scenario, too! Splendid episode. I'd love to see an episode dedicated to the history of games workshop history as a company. I found especially the "backstory" section in this video interesting and entertaining.
JordanSorcery has that covered, and it's hard to do it without just reading out DiceMen...and you can just do that yourself 🤷♂️
I wanna give you a billion Victory Points for using the Dark Omen theme tune music during the battle encounter demonstration. That rumbling tense anthem is deep in my memory stats.
Likewise! "We fear the enemy!"
R.I.P. Bryan Ansell.
Looking great Snipe! I'm so glad you're healthier, hoping to see you and Wib even more this year. Every Codex Compliant is a must watch for me!
Can I just say, I really appreciate your use of the Chaos Gate soundtrack from 1997. It is, to this day, my favourite soundtrack ever.
New codex compliant! My day just got a lot better. Glad to see both of you looking so healthy!
Great video, lovely message at the end about creative endeavors. Always love seeing the early days of properties before they truly found themselves. Appreciate your hard word.
I love the look and feel of these oldhammer rules and minis, thank you for a great reveiw.
I'm really happy to see this, as there isn't much on the first couple editions around, and I've been really wanting to do Vengeance of the Lichemaster (Since it's the first appearance of the Skaven) for a while now.

Perfect length for my morning commute! Excellent video. Cheers!
Favorite series by far. Happy holidays you two!
One of the goals was "it must have rules for every mini we make"
Great work on this video, I loved every part of it! And a very true message at the end about just trying something and make some mistakes!
I truly love you guys, your content is only getting better. keep doing what you're doing!
I feel very unwell. My organs are failing. But ill keep breathing for this.
Great video. Its great to see yall making deep dives like this.
God, i needed this. Love your codex compliant series 😊
That Lizardman mini is really quite nice, good paint too.
Nice video.
always a treat to see new videos, this helped me a bunch during my stay in the hospital!
This was probably your best video. Well done.

Is that music from Dark Omen I hear? It awoke a long dormant memory from ages past. Love that game.
So, TH-cam’s ad algorithm seems to be developing either a dark sense of humour or is becoming rather sarcastic as when Wib mentioned fish getting lead poisoning the video cut to an advert for Just Eat with Christina Aguilera saying “yummy”
Haven’t watched you two in ages. Fantastic backlog I’m so excited
That White Dwarf review of 1st edition was by Joe Dever, who wrote the Lone Wolf and Freeway Warrior books
damn haven't even started watching this beforehand already acclaimed gem of a video and I was expecting something of like 10 or so. . .but I am utterly delighted to see it will be 45 minutes of pure enjoyment watching this 🎉🎉
"... it is more like lint." 😄😄😄
Thanks for another fun video; a great trip in to the origens of Warhammer.
That C19 Lizardman is still a cool looking mini. It looks so self-confident. And the coveted Stormcast is a very cool big lad.
"Balrogs have wings, eh? You Tolkien to me? I don't see anyone else here; you must be Tolkien to me."
Haven't seen your videos in years! Glad that you guys are still doing Codex Compliant series. Happy new year to you.
Im a huge fan of that Oldhammer Chaos Warrior, its so different but so interesting
Great video. Oh and Dice men is a great book.
Another interesting fact about Newark is that it's an anagram of Wanker. Just saying.
This video was neither too long, nor too short. It was exactly as long as it needed to be.
You used the Dark Omen music for the little game demonstration! Don't think it went unnoticed!
God I love the old editions. As a newer fan it feels so much simpler yet more unique compared to what we have now.
C15 and c16 orcs, some of the best characters ever made, glad I still have my 200 plus lads.
"Everytime you drink a monster energy drink" was said AS I was sipping one lmao. Perfect comedic timing.
The Italian princess first appeared in Mario, released in the UK by July 1983 (some sources say March).
Oh hey that back and forth in melee was sorta brought back for kill team!
both players roll their attacks and then alternate either hitting with a success or using it to cancel out an opponents success
This is easily the best and most watchable video on Warhammer!
I’ve got a copy/set which my brother gave me as a birthday present. I can’t believe that was 40 years ago. I feel so old
Always wild when I watch these videos and see my local store featured.
Looking so good, Snipe! So glad to see you on my screen again. You two are aces.💜
Avarice and hunger feel like alignments that have always been part of thhe character creation in dnd, but long forgotten.
Its time to bring them back!
29:20 I did work out how the currency system works (and it does make more sense laid out on a chart.) there are three coins: Crowns (Gold), Shillings (Silver), and Pennies (Brass). Delightful video ❤ I purchased it this year as we’re both turning 40… Will have a go at The Ziggurat of Doom at some point!
too long? this was too short if anything, it was great! great video as usual :>
"And thus Megatron's Mega Arrows entered the annals of history, heroically even."
Seeing the cover of Ender's Game on a White Dwarf cover is weird at 4:16
My copy of WH 2nd edition is signed by Joe, who I accosted at an event at the Citadel factory.
@@johnscarr70 My copy of Lone Wolf 20 is signed by him :) He got me my start as a writer.
brian ansell sadly passed away just a day or two ago - RIP, brother.
side note - 5:52: I didn't know that Joe Dever (Lone Wolf) used to write for White Dwarf?? Coolfax.
