I like this "cut out of a stream" format. I also appreciate that your answers were suited to different areas of interest. I also love that your "starter" suggestions didn't include the 7300. Granted it, alone, is more than $1000, but it grinds my gears when folks suggest it for beginners. I started on an FT450D (still my main rig), and love it. And it's much cheaper.

I came here from the Modern Rogue since I'm an Austinite and I enjoy their content. Been wanting to get a whole ENTIRE shack just for fun! I really want to get into this and talk to other people. Ive gotten a nice little radio and a power supply but I want a shack whenever I do get my license so I can use everything I have lol.

Have to say I enjoyed this show ! I'm designing my shack around emergency comms, SOTA/POTA and QRP. At the present, I'm more interested in building antennas. I want to also have portable QRO rig that doubles as my first home base station. Want VHF/UHF portable units in cars, one in garage and a home base unit. I want to include local scanners/CB/GRMS/and a very good SW listening setup with dedicated antenna. I buy nearly every piece of equipment used. Have had good luck so far. I save a lot of money that way. My ultimate goal is to actually set up a repeater station running everything on solar/ off grid ! Excellent show ! But $1000 is hard to work with. Now you need to get a show together showing how to test used equipment in the field or at the swap meet or ham fest !
I liked this video very much! This is very good for a beginner or a newer ham. As for suggestions for improvement, I would go with a simpler background behind you. It would put you more in focus. The person who downvoted you has no reason to do so.

Just got my General ticket. Now time to try and figure out how to get on HF on a VHF budget. ;) I ran our VHF net several times on a TYT TH-UV88 with speaker mic many times. Only recently got a Yaesu FT-2900R mobile (bought on QRZ) and put it on a very inexpensive, but fully usable 30 Watt peak/25 Watt continuous PS. I run that into a Tram discone multi-band antenna. I think my HF goal for now is a Xiegu G90 and maye a dipole or even a longwire. I just want to reach out of Texas for now. I don't need to hit Europe, China, or Brazil. Nice, but not necessary.
The wife selling your radio gear for what you paid for them is like the gun guys who say the same thing. LOL.
Concerning the crimper. I picked up a Harbor freight standard crimper, on sale for 10.00. Then ordered a set of Kline jaws for Andersen power pole, for about 16.00. They fit perfectly, and for about the same price I have a tool that does both.
HRO is great. They guys there are friendly, helpful and informative. You also get to try out the stuff they have in the store before buying.
I’ve finally settled on a version of the HF $1,000 shack; interested in voice only, not contesting, being portable on my property and I like to listen:

Since we are almost 4 years into the future of this list , how valid are the options still? I really love this list as someone new to radio , im studying for my basic and harec license right now ( Belgium ). Since 2019 a lot of things have changed , covid happened , electronics shortages , new radios , inflation , ....
I got myself a 450D used for £400 and a new End Fed long wire £45. Then a basic SDR for £13 and an Panoramic Adapter Tap (PAT70M) Board £20 plus a cable assemble £12. Second hand 25amp power supply £10 and Auto antenna tuner £80. Total £580.
Picked up a box full of radios and CB for £45 which included a nice old VHF rig and a 2m dipole for £40. and 2x Baofeng UV-5r £23. Plus loads of coax £40 All in Total Price £728.
So shopping around it can be done under $1000.

I live in an apartment so there is very little I can do. I put a dual band 1/4 wave antenna on my balcony. I currently feed it with 5W HTs (I have a 10W HT on the way). So far, no complaints even though I'm on the second floor so the antenna is quite visible. It works reasonably well but isn't great being about 10' off the ground on the corner of a four story building facing water side instead of towards the city.
So much to learn. I passed my tec and general on Saturday. Waiting for my FCC email. I have no idea where to start so here I am.

Just starting to "cut my teeth" in amateur radio studying for my technical license, and I love the information here. My goals are to simply make contacts with others (I know a few people from my Scout troop and a couple of folks I know through church who are also hams), and then I'd like to explore storm spotting and relaying weather information through our local Skywarn network.

@Hoshnasi that's what I've figured for my first u/VHF radio room. If Spawny can do it in CA$ i know i can from here on the USA. I've actually process it all out. And yup going with the FT8900R. Going for quality. Think I'll save the lmn coax for the hf rig. So basically, just a UHF VHF radio room i can do in 1k USD. I've gotta a kiddo a help raised that's a great welder and plan on getting him in on helping with the antenna mount. Maybe I'll get him in on ham too. My son and him used to amp up thiet CBs to unreal power shhh lol.

Loved the video. I got lucky with some in my shack. I had a coworkers family member sell me some when her father passed. A Icom 2 meter that I sold for $100, a ic271a, a ic765, and a kdk 2 meter. For all of those four radios for $700

Distillation of stream to video always appreciated. Less chitchat, more noteworthy info over time. Could be a lot more concentrated, still. I don't care about someone's just having gotten their license and other trivia, most especially not superchat or equivalent where people effectively purchase online presence through your feeling compelled to call out their messages. Video is called Budget $1,000 Ham Radio Shack, so that's what I'd expect to learn, and nothing more.
Poor audio level matching, though. If the little green bar in Windows volume mixer (or fruit-based fashion accessory equivalent) is barely twitching above zero even with everything cranked to 100 %, you're too quiet, simple as that.

Wierd, I just got into ham a little more than a year ago...my setup, used 450d $350, Baofeng, $32, Ftm 3200dr $145, offset dipole $45, and just recently added a Nooelec sdr....looks like I doing ok with my choices.
What is a good bench power supply for a Icom 7000 with a Buddipole Mini? Trying to get to my first setup past the Baofeng and bought a Icom 7000 at a Hamfest 4 years ago for a steal. Never got around to setting it up and getting back into the hobby and can use some help!
I started out with an ICOM IC-7200, a Baofeng UV5R, a (cheap) power supply and an MFJ autotuner. I built my own random wire antenna. All totaled, a about 1500 bucks. Did you mention you have to buy things like coax, connectors, maybe a soldering iron and some other small tools? There are also costs (mileage will vary) for building and supporting the antenna. Also, you may have to placate neighbors whose electronics are affected by RFI, or your radio may be affected by their RFI. That costs some money to alleviate, too. After a short time, the costs do begin to mount up.
Still, compared to other hobbies like boating, hunting, tennis or even golf, the cost of entry into amateur radio is tolerable, especially for the XYL. On that last note, the XYL is also a determining factor on he kind and cost of your antenna(s).
how does the Alinco DX- SR8T match up in the HF world? I've been thinking about picking one up.
I have a simple shack. For analog VHF/UHF Btech 25X2 for $114 and my DMR setup is DVMEGA (Gigaparts) $239 with a MD 380 $89 for analog radio I use a Diamond X50A $95 Total of $537. Add about another $100 for Coax. $637 with Coax.
At the very start of the upload, no idea what the kit is yet, but I hope it's an IC7300 and an EFHW :)
I like digital and fm/ssb on hf and vhf. Here in sweden you could buy a g90 (5600sek), a handie-talkie (~1000sek) and a portable antenna (hf-p1, almost like mp-1 1500sek) for about 8100 sek total. Its about 980dollars with todays value (8,27sek/1us$) maybe you can squizze in the ce-19 for about 400sek (49$). All prices are local here in sweden and can be buyed att Limmared webshop.
At 27:25 you're talking about methods to record the audio from the radios. Why not use a pocket recorder with either USB out or Memory card to record that audio? You feed using a 3.5mm (typically stereo) headphones jack right into the recorder, you can usually set the sound quality, it makes it easy to navigate between recordings as each file is assigned a file number and full date/time stamp, and can be organized by about 5 folders.
The second option is to record using your laptop, desktop, tower PC. These offer way more storage and superior filing and audio capabilities. You already have a computer so why spend more money on a dedicated one? Use Audacity or other powerful free audio mixing and editing software for your recorded conversations.
I'm a newbie to this topic. I'm going through your reviews to learn about this topic. But I was wondering how a fractal antenna can be deployed for base, mobile, handy-talky, walky talky transceivers? Are the walky talky transceivers more like the backpack variety of WW2 and Vietnam era models? Or does such a model exist?

For a thousand dollars you could buy an FT-857 which covers most ham bands. Still have enough money left for a power supply. With a large roll of house wire you can make up your own antennas.
Except, there are better radios out there now for less money.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse well that is only one option. I mentioned it because of the wide coverage it has. I own an Ft- 891 which cost me 600 dollars new. That would leave you enough for a dual band HT or mobile like an FTM100 or whatever suits you to cover vhf uhf. But there are many options. When I first started out all my gear was bought used from ham swaps.
It’s pretty easy to spend a lot more than $1000 dollars, maybe under 2000 to get a decent shack. But it requires a lot of study, because if we think about buy everything for the shack instead build it, it will be insanely expensive

What is a good alternative to the Yaesu FT-818? I am wanting something mobile with at least 10-25 watts, battery would be great but do not mind having to bring an external battery. I am wanting something for a go bag.

FT-818 is only 6w I believe. If you looking for 25w or more in something portable you're basically looking for a Yaesu FT-891. There aren't alot of radios that have a small footprint in that power output.

The design is old enough to get a driver's license, it was always kind of a crappier "Me too!" to the Icom 706MKiiG, which got discontinued 10 years ago.
I use a affordable manual tuner (MFJ-971) - this matches almost anything.

I know this is an old video but I happened upon a deal kind of like the yard sale thing, I had bought a camp stove from a guy probably a year or so ago. Never met him he just had the stove outside. for me...actually he may have given it to me. Anyway I saw a yard sale type post and recognized his house. I was driving by a few days later and decided to swing in and check on him...Sadly he had passed away. He was quite the collector of stuff and his daughter was trying to get rid of it all. So she said I could go into the house and look. Quickly I found and old Heath HF radio and power supply. Not having an HF radio I picked it up and a few other things and kept looking around...the place was packed with stuff. Radio (CB and HAM) and TV and a bunch of other stuff. Anyway I told her I would take the stuff I had and we made a deal for a couple hundred dollars. She asked me if I had seen another one in the garage...I hadn't. Long story short I ended up with tote after tote filled with radio gear. I have maybe 10 2 meter radios. A bunch of power supplies, antennas of all sorts. Two more HF radios (Ic-707s) A GAP Titan antenna a couple other antennas and a ton of parts and pieces. She saved everything radio related for me. She said she would have had to toss it if not.
While the HF radios are old they all seem to work. The worst looking one (and IC-707) I have actually made my first contacts on 40 meters with. I still want a IC-7300 but for now I am learning a ton setting up a shack finally. Once I go through some of these radios (specifically all the CB and 2 meter stuff) I will probably be able to make back most of my money I would guess. Not sure what I will do with all those radios otherwise.... maybe a HRCC FB giveaway for a newbie or something...hmmm

Wires-X just works! HRI-200 only required for dedicated operation.
If you run a radio in pdn mode or HRI mode you still need a computer to make it work.
One fcc commissioner who was a ham, a Mr. Hollingsworth commented that if he died people would get a bargain as she believed what he told her. That no matter what the equipment cost is was $200.
I think the kenwood d710ga is a better radio for a aprs shack. it digipeats on its own without having to hook it up to a computer or anything.

Invest in a good antenna analyzer and build your own antenna! Learn how they work and using your analyzer, tune the antenna for where you want to operate and maximize your output.
I am not a fan of the junk collection some Hams have. if I am no longer using a piece of equipment, it goes up for sale and it’s outta here! you won’t see me schlepping it to the next HamFest in hopes of getting five bucks for it.

Alright, here’s my question. My dilemma.

What’s different now from 4 YRS ago, is that we’re right on the cusp of falling into
World War III. That being the case, I foresee our supply of radios, and basically every component and nick-nack piece of hamsterology will immediately dry up and become buku spendy, the moment
America formally goes hot and deep into this foolishness.
Alright- talk to me about the radio I should buy, and the kind of antenna I can inexpensively stick up on the roof.

1000$ is gone easy when have to buy radio gear for the schack. I saw a guy how will sell 2 Yaesu FT-847 for under 1000$. But they have some bucks. Send to the right guy here can Fix them for under 200$ an the was one antenna tuner with them also an some other gears.
You never mention Kenwood. Kenwood has some of the best radios out there, and they offer the Kenwood TS-480SAT, which has an internal tuner and runs about $789 right now. I realize you aren't into Kenwood, but they're worth a mention.

I'd love to have an 857 but it seems like such a rip off at the price. $800+ for the radio and then all the other stuff you might want or need like tuners, usb interface, filters. That stuff should be included and priced at $2-300 less. Pretty much 20 year old technology here. It's obscene how much hf gear costs.

@@tjlovesrachel I have and while it's much more expensive, I think it's slightly more reasonable being a much more capable radio, but still really overpriced. It seems super obvious to me that the prices are arbitrary and not connected to production costs at all. If a Chinese manufacturer like Xiegu can sell radios with the features they have for under $450, why can't Icom and Yaesu put out anything for less than $600. Is an IC-705 really more than 3 times the radio that a G90 is?

@@tjlovesrachel I don't have an HF rig yet, no. I'm leaning towards getting either a Xiegu G90, or an Icom IC-7100 when I can get the money together. I passed the tech and general and was one question short of the extra almost 4 years ago, but I live in a small apartment and it's been hard for me to justify the expense with the compromised set up I'd have to deal with. If I could have any radio I wanted, the FT-991A or even the FTDX10 would be at the top of my list. I've wanted to get a QRLABS QSX for a long time, but I've given up on waiting for that to come out.
HRI-200 isnt needed anymore if you dont care about having your own room.

I recommend you buy used and make your own antennas then. $1,000 is a modest sum for a whole shack to be fair.

First thing you need is a well built "shack" ample power ran to it, perhaps some security on it, OK there's $5000.00, now lets get to the equipment

For HF yes. VHF and UHF can be had for way cheaper.

Stop recommending the Hakko soldering irons. I realize this is an old stream, but the TS100 or TS80 are far better, cheaper, and portable (since the can run off a battery pack or USB-C, respectively).

While I think that your videos might be very helpful and informative, there’s too much nonsense going on. It would be much easier to follow if there wasn’t all the going back and forth. Do the video on the topic at hand and leave out all the rest. I’ve tried watching a lot of the but can’t get through them. Kind of like ADHD. Here’s my video on, oh look, butterfly, etc
