Buying just the DJI Mic 2 (No receiver/RX) to connect via Bluetooth means you won't get internal backup recording on the DJI Mic 2, neither 24 bit or 32 bit float.

Also, having just the DJI Mic 2 (TX) means you can't turn on 32 Bit Float internal recording if you want to use it just as a standalone recorder, it defaults to 24 bit (not possible to enable 32 bit float without the receiver/RX). There is also no way to turn of the low cut filter without the receiver. There is also no way of adjusting the gain on the mic, which is made worse by the fact you also can't adjust gain inside a thirdparty app like the Blackmagic Camera App - And you have to use that, or another 3rd party app, since the DJI Mic 2 doesn't work in the native iPhone video recording app ...
Slightly out of the way on the DJI product page is a piece of information that might affect your buying decision - Watch the video to find out how you can work around some of these shortcomings. Thanks for watching and commenting :) Yeah, I bought it with my own money so no holding back ;) I do have a full walkthrough of *everything* about the dji mic 2 planned in a couple of weeks, from just using the mic via bluetooth to a phone to the full experience but focusing on if there is a point for most people to use 32bit float or not, some eq-stuff properly explained etc, so watch out for that :)
And yeah, hahahahaha, I was early on the ball on TH-cam with my christmas tree cleanup video and thw popcorn removal video from my Siemens S65 phone ;) Didn’t properly start until this year though, with a couple of false starts october last year and early this year ;) Lot’s of fun so planning on sticking around sharing everything about «building my studio/filming setup» :)

Hahaha :) Thanks, appreciate it :) Yeah, that was like a last second addition, recorded it 5 minutes before rendering the video - watched through the video a final time and though to myself «I don’t wanna do that whole ‘reveal the thing midway through’ thing» and decided to add it at the beginning instead and put a positive spin on it with some potential ways around the problem hopefully giving people a reason to watch :) Thanks again man, got some more content on the Dji Mic 2 coming up before I continue with my DIY TH-cam Studio Gear stuff for a little while, before diving into examples of how to use the low cost DIY gear to try imitate «big» youtubers tricks and tips on a budget, hopefully you’ll enjoy it :)

Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback :) I totally agree, it’s all a «work in progress» and I’m still figuring things out ;) If you watch some of the newer videos I think you will find the audio levels are more … level? Balanced? Slightly more cohesive at least :) But still working on finding the perfect balance, so any feedback is welcome, keep it coming :)

I love the editing on this. I have the first gen two microphone DJI. I love it but I don't use it often enough. I have some adventures coming where I will use it more.

Working on a follow up now with a bit more «direction» and «purpose» for the video, focusing on usability of just having the microphone using it with an iphone vs having the transmitter *and* receiver with proper audio samples for all use cases, as well as a look at how to EQ it properly for deeper voices.
My voice sounds super muffled with it mounted to my chest like DJI show it in their promo pics, and the waveform analyser in DaVinci Resolve shows almost no higher frequency data when I analyze the audio from the mic) so that’ll be interesting :)
can u pls suggest a best sound gain setting receiver and transmitter gain ? using iphone 14 pro max some time am facing a issue with sound was annoying receiver gain +6 Transmitter gain +6 when i try to use receiver gain 0 and transmitter gain +9 sound looks better but am not satisfied pls help guide me a best setting for iphone lighting adapter sound setting used another way via cable connect to iphone 14 promax sounds looks better audio quality
which camera app are you using? I’m using the blackmagic camera app and have zero gain on transmitter and receiver and the audio level works for my voice - with cameras and using the audio jack you usually need mor gain, but on phones the gain can be around zero and give you proper levels :)

Loved the video! Great to see a new one from you! I dont think I have any want to purchase the dji lav mics. I dont have much of a use for them. Sure the bluetooth would be nice, but Id only need the transponder... idk... very fun video though!
Hey man, thanks for the kind words :) Yeah, this was a quick turnaround indeed, just two days from buying the small combo to publishing, while stuff I’ve recorded weeks ago sits on a shelf ;) The need for something like this is a very case by case thing, I have a couple of very specific scenarios where I was constantly having to adjust gain levels on the stationary mic, move in to talk to the camera, audio changing while I was working on stuff and commenting, so having something «on» me for consistency in audio slowly turned into a «must have to save some time» scenario.
Apart from that, well, it does introduce opportunity to have more variation in shots, like some of the stuff you do when out and about filming yourself setting up a shot - being able to talk and record audio while setting up your camera for a shot adds some variation to the shots you can get of yourself working - but if your current situations are 1) talking head videos and 2) commentary on top of footage, and not much «interaction with a stationary camera while moving around» it’s probably not a must have or nice to have :)
@andresjoberg yes. That is mostly what I do. When I feel the need for a lav mic, I usually run my Pocket 2 as a "b cam" type angle. Most of the time, I dont use the footage, but I use the audio instead. I think the only feature I would like in this product is the internal recording and the bluetooth connectivity for my phone. ( I dont film a ton with my phone, but it would just be nice to have in very specific circumstances) I am looking at a Comica wireless system, though, so that might be more what I need. But we will see if I buy any wireless lav system anytime soon. Im getting a long fine without one right now, so why spend money when I dont have to?

That’s correct, and unfortunately an oversight from DJI who could have programmed a button combo or a simple app to allow for this functionality to be controlled from a phone, allowing for use with just mic and phone - but maybe for the mic 3 with better bluetooth audio :)
@@AndreSjoberg it’s bad business practices paywalling 32bit behind a receiver or new device. At least give us noise cancelling as it can be enabled from the transmitter itself. But just doesn’t activate even through the light turns yellow. Maybe in the future.

I have a question though. Let say, you paired the transmitter with an iPhone, do you need to relink it with the receiver or it is automatically relinked by the receiver when the power is on?
Hi :) You switch modes on the transmitter with a button between bluetooth (blue light) and wifi/receiver (green light). When you switch from bluetooth to wifi, and the receiver is on it automatically reconnects, and the same when switching from wifi to bluetooth if it has been paired with the phone previously :)
hello so i could just buy the transmitter and have quality audio? i actually prefer syncing the audio later
Hi :) Yes, you get 24 bit audio recorded directly on the transmitter :) Of course the quality of the recording will depend on mic placement, use of lav-mic etc, since the built in mic is good, but very different sounding based on placement of the transmitter when recording.
It is of course nowhere close to the studio mic quality if used for music etc, but for voice you can get decent recordings directly on the transmitter :)

Now that you have used it, how do you like the quality? From the videos I’ve seen, specifically between the DJI Mic 2 and RØDE wireless pro, the RØDE have sounded better in my opinion.
The quality of the internal recording and through the DJI receiver is miles above the bluetooth-quality in general for the Mic 2, next video will hopefully show this :) As from what I’ve heard of the Røde wireless it seems to depend on the characteristics of the voice being recorded - depending on the most prominent characteristic frequencies in the voice being recorded the results between Røde and DJI 2 differ in terms of which is better - I’m guessing this depends on the frequency curve in the microphone element of the two - hopefully the next proper tests I do tomorrow will shed some light on what quality I’m able to get with some slight EQ’ing, making it easier to compare :)
I think that røde has better audio quality. I’m not fully satisfied with dji mic 2 but there are some settings that can help.
Volume up receiver and transmitter gain. My volume was super low before i did this.
I could barely hear my recordings.
Placing mic right in front of your mouth gives best audio.
Only time when dji is better than rode is in noisy environment with TURNED AI noise reduction.
Ai is even good if you dont have loud background noise because it enhances my voice even better.
Using transmitter connected via Bluetooth is waste of time. Audio quality is super bad. I highly recommend using receiver or record internally.

I don't get it. When using the receiver with my iPhone, do I have to do an extra recording with the transmitter or does the video file of my phone automatically contain the 32bit float audio?
Hi there :)
The transmitter/microphone can record internally a backup audio track in 32 bit float. You start this recording on the mic by pressing the red circle button (and the red light lights up). This is stored on the mic/transmitter itself. You then have to connect the mic to a pc or mac via usb-cable and transfer the audio recording-file, and put it into your editing software, sync to the audio in your video file and mute the original audio track from your video file.
The video file from your does not contain the 32 bit float-file, it is a backup track feature :)
But this feature is only available if you use the mic/transmitter with the dji receiver connected to your phone (green connection light on the mic).
If the transmitter is connected directly to the iphone with bluetooth (connection light is blue) the feature that records a backup track on the mic in 32 bit float is disabled.
Great. Thanks. It’s too bad that I have to go this extra step. I want to record interviews with people and have to press the button on both microphones to get that 32bit float. I daresay I forget to stop that recording. 😳
@@harzenduro Yeah it can be a bit of a hassle - but in reality if levels are set correctly on the mic in most cases you won’t need to use the 32 bit float recordings, if it doesn’t clip in the video file recording on your phone it doesn’t give you any additional real life quality enhancement using 32 bit float :) It’s nice to have if something goes wrong with the audio recorded with your video file on the phone, but personally, so far after having used it for a couple of months now I haven’t needed it at all :)
Best solution: if you’re going to do 32-bit internal recording, get a Rode Wireless Pro for a few dollars more. Sound quality is a little better too, and you have timecode!

Nope, that’s one of the problems, and default is 24 bit - you have to either use the receiver, or (I think) it can be done from the Pocket 3 / Action 4 - this goes for the low cut filter as well (on by default). Also you can’t adjust mic gain either. Only noise cancelling can be turned on/off with the power button

Yeah it does have limitations, but it feels like some of those limitations are «DJI-imposed» since some features like that could easily be implemented with a series of button presses in sequence, and some could be done with an app. The major problem is the lack of backuo recording with bluetooth connected to smartphones though, I really don’t understand why they did that :/
I bought just the transmitter itself with no receiver. Is the 32 bit float automatically enabled in the transmitter? I bought it for taking audio clips of car exhaust. After a test run with my car it seems to be clipping quite a bit. Any input?
Hi and thanks for watching :) that’s a really good question, and one I’ll be looking into in the next video - from my memory I *had* to go into the transmitter/mic settings on the receiver and turn the 32 bit recording mode *on* for the mic, so I think the mic, out of the box, is *not* 32 bit float. Which is a problem since there is no button combo as far as I know that will switch that on the transmitter/mic - so that’s one of the issues I’ll look into in yhe next video, cause I haven’t had time to check if the app has any access to the device to set those settings. The quality switching feature *could* possibly be added through a button press function later on, but I haven’t seen anything yet that suggests its there now - stay tuned and we’ll find out :)
On my mic I had to turn on 32bit via receiver because it was not turned when I opened it.
So my guess is that you are not recording with 32 bit right now!
@@MrIbrakic You are absolutely correct Sir :) 32 bit float is turned of by default, and the low cut filter is turned *on* by default, removing some of the fullness of the sound being recording, leading to tinny voices.
Unfortunately, DJI support told me you need the receiver or one of their other compatible cameras (pocket 3, action 4) to enable 32 bit internal recording.
Yeah, that really put’s the nail in the coffin for DJI in terms of making money off of smaller creators wanting just the mic for either convenience or cost - worst part is I see no reason why this can’t be enabled through a firmware update setting up a button combo for it and some confirmation through blinking led’s -not ideal since there is limited ways of then knowing if 32 bit is enabled or not, and kind of convoluted, but it would be a nice if they did something like that for those who feel up for the task of enabling it this way, bit I’m guessing they want people to get at least the TX/RX combo - which makes sense from a business perspective
Can I use the internal recording without the receiver?
Yes you can :) The Mic/Transmitter allows you to do internal recording, but not 32bit internal recording unless you have access to a transmitter to connect and turn it on. Also, the low cut filter on the mic is on by default, so you need a transmitter to turn that off as well. And if course: if the mic is connected to an iphone via bluetooth the internal recording does not work.
By the way: just released another video on the DJI Mic 2 - even when using the internal recording the audio might not sound great out of the mic untreated, so check it out for some examples of how it sounds with my voice untreated, and how much eq’ing and compression I had to do on it :)
@@AndreSjobergIf I am not wrong if you pair it with dji osmo action 4 trough bluetooth, you can disable the low cut. Probably the same on pocket 3
@@Mindfulskeptic- that’s correct :) but not everyone has those, and this video specifically is for those who thought buying just the mic and using the mic with a smartphone that they have, not having to invest in another camera like the pocket or action 4 :) Dji fronted the bluetooth connection to smartphone functionality in their messaging, but pushed the «with reduced quality and no backup recording feature» to the back.
Ny first though when I saw the launch was «great, now I only need to bring the mic when I’m recording on my phone on the road», but after digging I found these * all over the place, and finally found their «of but it doesn’t do this or that».
And the same goes for the settings:
a combo of button presses *should* be possible to implement to turn things on or off, or an app, or a small piece of software for a pc or mac, just to use the mic 2 standalone *and* have access, but they obviously don’t see that market share as significant enough.
I was really hoping you mentioned how to use the Mic 2 without receiver or other device to do standalone recording. I can't seem to find any instructions on how to do that... yet.
Hi :) You just turn on the mic, and then press the button with a red circle. Light should go red and it records internally :) If you look at 6:32 in the video, I press the red circle button and the red recording light turns on. So if you buy just the mic you first turn it on with the power button, but don’t pair it with anything - and then turn it over and press the red circle record button and it will record internally. when you are done press the red circle button again and it stops.
Then you connect it to your computer and open it up like a hard drive and copy the audio files from the mic to your computer :)
@@AndreSjoberg Thank you. I did finally figure it out but on mine it doesn't always work seamlessly but at least it works. I just have to make sure the light turns red. The volume is very low but I guess I can boost it in post. I have the gain set to -12 when using it with the Action 4. Maybe it stays there but behaves differently in standalone mode. Thank you for taking the time to explain it.
@@SW-Video Great :) Yeah, double checking for the light to go on is key ;) And yeah, the volume *is* low, which is partly to keep it from blowing out/distorting since it doesn’t do 32bit float without turning it on with the receiver - but how/where are you mounting the mic on you? are you doing the chest?
In general the signal can be boosted quite a bit in post without introducing a lot of noise, and of course EQ-ing will help with clarity, and Compression will help with keeping the levels level :)
If you haven’t watched it already I do have another video on the channel about the Mic 2 and EQ/Compression, it’s not a super detailed one, but it does have some audio examples, and eq/compression settings in post varies a lot for each persons voice characteristics so it might be worth a look *if* you’re not too familiar with it/want more info :)

Congrats :D you’re the first one to notice and comment on that :) It’s only the first segment though, and the views and comments so far just goes to prove that relevant and informative content trumps both video quality and even audio quality ;) All jokes aside though: the Blackmagic Camera app has a problem, it 100% gains the røde video mic 2 I’m using every time I plug it in, so after recording a short test to check the volume, which irritatingly means I have to unplug the mic to listen back since the iphone/blackmagic app tries to play back audio through the mic, I plugged the mic back in and forgot to double check the gain setting, so that first segment got blown a bit, but I didn’t have have the opportunity to rerecord it since I was editing in a different location :/ To be fair though, the topic is lack of features in the mic, and the muffled audio in bluetooth mode - and the remaining audio for the unpacking and test of the bluetooth audio quality should be fine :) Thanks for watching, and next video I’ll triple check the levels (the joys of making videos on a phone with no view of the levels on screen while sitting in front of the phone ;)
@@AndreSjoberg good work. I am not your supervisor you don’t have to explain yourself. Regardless what you do, shooting on a phone will always be annoying. Limited storage, the annoyance of transferring footage without SD card, overheating risk, non-removable battery, accidental text/call/notification tones ruining the shot, forgetting to turn on or off the airplane mode…. I recommend you to give up shooting on a phone and move up to a proper mirrorless camera as soon as you can.

If I had the cash for a proper camera do you think I would be shooting on the phone ;) The funny thing is, almost none of the things you mention have been a *big* problem so far, recording directly to ssd (even better than using sd-cards), no overheating issues, filming at hours with little to no calls coming in works for me - the two major pain points is 1) not seing myself (fixable by transmitting image to my laptop to check framing) and 2) the iphone refusjons to playback video audio through iphone speaker when mic is connected (not sure if it’s a blackmagic camera app problem, or iphone audio routing problem, or røde mic not identifying as just a microphone/not a headset/mic combo.
Apart from that doing production on a phone, from a low budget diy just getting started point of view (which is also the main focus of my channel (for now)) the phone route is actually pretty good, of course having a dedicated camera will make *everything* better, but also emptying my pockets for 3-4000 in camera body, lense(s), memory cards, card reader ++ but since it’s not an option the phone will have to suffice :) Fortunately I have a couple of older phones as well that I’m using for B-Cam since it’s kinda hard to film your phone with your phone ;)
