"This Huey will try to kill you." I was a former UH-1 crew chief during the Desert Storm war and was lucky enough to have pilots who felt it wise to ensure the crew chiefs could handle basic flight if an emergency arose. You aren't kidding, keeping this thing from killing you is a trick when you're learning.
Fun fact: if you increase the throttle before engaging the starter you initiate something called "hotstart". This could damage the engine IRL and this is why you see fire coming from the exhaust. The best way is to watch the engine RPM. If it reaches 15% and the main rotor is spinning then apply the throttle.
If you are interested, the ship you landed on is an Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigate. When you landed, the ship was not configured for flying operations, the rails around the flight deck and should be laid outboard to form a safety net and the 4 big whip antennas up on 02 deck should have also been laid outboard. The hut down on the deck to starboard is for the person controlling the RAST system that pulls the Seahawks down on deck in rough weather and catches a stubby pole in the under-body in a big clamp. You can see the track that the two clamps run on leading back to the port and starboard hangers, used to drag the helo in after shutdown and the tail and rotor are folded. The windowed area in the rear end of the superstructure is the flight controller. There should be an artificial horizon above that hut and below the CIWS. To starboard you can see the three traffic lights (vertical circles)that indicate to the pilot if the deck is open, flashing green for good to go, red for give it a miss and yellow for hang about, we're not quite ready yet. You can also see the comms cable for the marshal coiled on bulkhead between the hangars. Pretty good model for a flight sim.
Flown many airplanes in FSX and always found helicopters ridiculously harder to master and the fact that this is alot more realistic gives me a new respect for Squirrel lol
Hi Bob, they are not really hard. However, the concept of flying a real helicopter in simulator is . . different. The concepts are pretty alien and much different to what you imagine.
The ATC wasn't mistaken clearing you to land on runway 07. You approach the runway and fly along it in a low hover to the taxiway and then follow the taxiway in a low hover to your parking area. It's the same for take-off. Taxi in a low hover along the taxiway to the runway and only then once facing into wind fly away.
All_Roads all real world airports require rotary aircraft to enter the traffic pattern and perform a touch down on the runway. The comment above is correct. The only time you wouldn't is if there is a specific helipad away from the main airport.
Fun fact - we used to do something similar on our S62 Seaking simulator at RAF Valley. As part of our daily morning readiness tests, we would take off from the pad at the former Search And Rescue Training Facility and fly over Cymyran beach. Just off shore, we had a carrier and a frigate. To test the flight controls and instrumentation, we would land on the carrier, then fly parallel to the frigate and land. Oh and we had a timed scoreboard, so the clock stopped when you landed in the center of the H outside the SAR building (you could hear the weight on wheels switch clunk). Sadly SAR was privatised and the Seaking simulator was decommissioned for scrap.
Also, just to clarify squirrel, when you loose lift and drop on landing it has nothing to do with altitude or ground effect, ground effect is that cushion of air you were talking about, that drop is due to loss of what is know as translational lift, what that means is that above a certain speed (about 40kts in the huey if memory serves) the rotor disk acts as a wing surface and behaves like the wing of a fixed wing aircraft, which is where most of your lift in forward flight comes from, once you slow down below your effective translational lift threshold (that magic 40kts mark) the amount of translational lift becomes negligible and you are back to relying on the lift from the blades themselves, hence if you don't adjust collective you drop. The best way to counter this is to gradually increase collective as you slow, with practice you should be able to have the collective reach it's hover position at the same time your forward airspeed drops below the 40kt mark. Good luck :)
I rode in the side door seat of one of these things 45 years ago. I still still remembered some crews who loved to do 70 or 80 degree banks. I always wondered if they were either high or legally insane, but that wasn't really a big deal back then, certainly not for us in the back of the chopper.
Fun Fact: The helicopter landing area on naval ships is called a Flight Deck. IRL the railings would have been down and they act as a safety net in case someone falls off the deck. After helicopters land, a crew runs out the them to put chocks on the wheels and chain it to the deck so it cannot move until it is ready to take off again.
You can't fly a Huey without playing "Fortunate Son" or "Ride of the Valkyries". 😞 What's the matter, Squirrel? Don't you love the smell of napalm in the morning?
While your landing on the friggin frigate quit friggin oscilating like that to bleed off speed. All you need to do is set up a sight picture to the boat, control your speed with the collective and cyclic and fly that path to the boat. When you get to the boat, you are landing just like you do on land. Need to be eye level with the Phalanx, stablelize your hover and then lower the collective and land on the deck. Dont get yourself into an unstablized PIO.!!!! Just a couple tips. Cheers
Helicopters often approach on runway headings, and will actually land if equipped with wheels, or hover over the numbers and hovertaxi to their parking. This is to keep incoming aircraft organized so those on approach are approaching from a controlled direction. It's not absolutely required, however it is safer than having a direct ramp approach or departure.
Good job squirrel for so little experience. I am a pilot in the RN so I have had my fair share of flight deck landings. Thank you for your concern as well! The Huey is an interesting aircraft and one I have very little experience in. From what I can see though you seem to have certainly grasped the basics. Well done.
I'm personally not very into military stuff but I found this interesting. I learned quite a few things about helicopters and I didn't even think they were that complicated to maneuver. This could have well been a helicopter training session and I agree, it must have looked funny from outside XD
Not only can you watch the replay, you can watch the replay of your flight and take control of the helicopter at any point during the replay. So basically, if you see something in the replay you think should have been done differently, or you could have done better, you can take control at that point and practice the correction then and there without having to load another mission and try to recreate the situation to do it. That's pretty cool! P.S. In the upper Left corner of the pedestal is the IFF/Transponder Control Panel. There's 2 rotary type switches there with 2 circuit breakers labeled Reply and Test. The rotary knob on the right, set it to STDB to turn it off.
IFF is "Identify Friend or Foe" It's what keeps your own guys from shooting you. Even though you are in a helicopter, when landing at an airport you still need to "hover land" on the runway you are told. While you never touch the runway itself you would essentially fly down it at an altitude of about 10 feet until you reach the taxiway instructed and then you would hover taxi down it to your parking space where you would finally touch down. Airports don't allow helicopters to just fly in and land whereever they feel like. They do this to prevent collisions. Heliports are different. Airports typically have specific patterns for helicopters though.
Squirrel! I know what you're looking for, you're looking for a challenge! The DCS MiG-21bis is apparently the hardest aircraft to take-off and land with. You simply have to try it! I have it personally and just the take-off is an adventure in itself, for landing you have to have your fuel tank almost empty to manage it, it's not impossible to fly but it sure is a challenge. You'll definitively love it.
Guessing you know by now but if not the IFF is Identification, friend or foe (IFF) is a radar-based identification system designed for command and control. It uses a transponder that listens for an interrogation signal and then sends a response that identifies the broadcaster. It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator. IFF may be used by both military and civilian aircraft. IFF was first developed during World War II, with the arrival of radar, and several friendly fire incidents.
Great video - and a great helicopter! Please do one on the DCS MiG-21 as well: Most-built supersonic aircraft of all time, more than 50 years of service, rugged Soviet-Russian technology, Mach 2 capable.
The cushion is called ground effect. The loss of lift is from translational lift. Your forward airspeed isn't high enough to assist the rotor in creating lift so as you leave ground effect your altitude will drop. Try getting some speed before gaining altitude.
Two mechanical world sounds I love: 1. The A-10 engines in a banking climb; you hear the literally musical phase shift as the load to one engine increases, and 2. the THUMP of a Huey's rotors from a distance...... they can be miles away and rattle window panes :) The opening scene of Apocalypse Now, under Jim Morrison's "This is the end.......... we're all insane........", for example. The Huey in Vietnam must have been like the A-10 in terms of the sound you're quite happy to hear approaching........ think you could do a session on how to generate maximum thump from those blades? The sounds embedded are awesome as it is, and I do occasionally get that thumping in a steep bank. No small challenge to take off in this beast...... it's quite easier to land it.
Watched a few films of our boys when we were in 'Nam; it's always interesting to see how skill and experience can make things look so easy and effortless. I mean them zipping along at tree top level following the contour of the country looked like nothing more than a Sunday drive. Amazing, truly amazing.
Hi Paul, thanks a lot for going DCS ... I completely enjoyed this video. It's a great aid that you chose to show the window with all the flying controls position ... very few DCS youtubers do that and it really helps to understand what you are doing to control the craft at each given instant. In my opinion it is not necessary for you to create a Tutorial, there are already plenty of those on YT .. I prefer to listen you talk about the game experience while I see you fly unusual scenarios or missions :) Best regards, and thanks again for sticking with TH-cam .. .not all of us enjoy twitch. Cheers.
Impressed, I only every tried helicopters in flight sim so long ago but I never managed. Nice touch and go on the ship, that didn't looked easy at all. It's all too complex for me but very cool and nice to know all that is free.
you can get rid of that box in the bottom right for better immersion with a simple keyboard shortcut. Also, change your joystick/pedal axis curves. yours are way too high. Finally, trim is not used for landing. You reset it to center on approach and slow down, inc power and land
5:25: RIP turbine. To start, throttle to fuel cutoff, engage starter, wait for minimum turbine rpm (usually around 12%), throttle to idle, hold starter engaged until achieving minimum self-sustaining rpm, then disengage starter. Once stabilized, slowly advance throttle to full.
***** "Well in the end reallity will always be more complex then any flightsim." Doh! That's why it's a flight SIMULATOR. Its very purpose is to enable you to learn about the real world without all the real-world ramifications. I'd say that's the real difference between a simulator and a game. A game is there just to entertain. A simulator might entertain, but should at the same time teach. Ultimately, for software such as DCS, X-Plane, FSX, (whatever), it comes down to how you're using it. If you're using them to both learn and have fun doing it, they're simulators. If you're just messing about without a care in the world, they're games.
There are consequences and failures in DCS for sure, absolutely. He just didn't cause one here. Probably because the hot start didn't last very long. It's not like a hot start will instantly kill your engine even in real life. If it spools up and blows out the fire quick enough it's fine. Or, well, not "fine" - but not destroyed or damaged.
Mythricia It was a joke, I was exaggerating a bit. Regardless, if this was a real helo, I ain't getting in that thing until it has had a hot section inspection. Shit like this can easily cascade into full on engine failure a little down the line if something got damaged.
I guess I just never get to the curtain part..... I need a long runway to land the Dora, but at least I do not die as in a Huey. Blades fall off all the time, but I just learned about watching the exhaust dial and now I can fly around for a long time. Great video and thanks
I bought the simulator about 3 years ago. The fact is, if you can master this you can fly the real craft. However, I was determined to never use the auto start and always go from cold start. You probably need 40 hours of tuition to get that right. I seem to remember the pre-start checklist was like 60 pages long lol.
Yaay, welcome back :D Always enjoy the DCS streams, been missing TH-cam, but understood why. You are so right about the audio, it's amazing, I always feel the need to turn up the volume, especially love in stream when you turn it up and go silent for a minute, definitely a Cragasm moment hehe.
Love your videos Squirrel and really enjoy all the content you put out. My dad actually fixed these exact helicopters back in the late 70's when he was in the Army. His favorite helicopter. He was a Crew Chief at 17 years old, that's how good of a mechanic he was. Anyway, keep up the amazing work and keep doing what you do best. Happy flying!
that was great I felt air sick, a long time a go when I was in the Army we did a week on the Isle of Man, we had 2 UH1 Helicopters from 366 Squadron AAC Topcliffe a few of us lucky lads got to go up and be flown around the Laxey Wheel the helicopter was shaking like no body's business ( I did not say 633) there really was a 366AAC in the 1970tysthank you for showing us how it's flown
Come fly on the 373rd Blue Flag server, it is a dynamic campaign that relies on fighters strikers and transports to all work together. Lots of great Huey flying on this server. -Toast
Squirrel - relevant to this video (and surprised no-one's mentioned it yet!) - look up "Beartrap hauldown device". The smart way to get a helicopter onto a frigate in a storm!
King Snowman , it need to be a bit beefy. For Single Player missions, I started off with an I5, 1060GTX and 8 GB of RAM. For Multiplayer, I've had to upgrade to 16 GB RAM (barely enough) and a 1070TI. Bit of a RAM hog, but runs decently on medium spec machines
IFF stands for identify friend from foe, its basically a transponder which a secondary radar emits to this transponder and waits for a reply which tells the radar exactly what aircraft it is.
IFF Ident Friend Foe. Its a standardised identification system that sends an ident code that radars can use ot identify you. In combat normally set to off as it gives your position away.
Love the details here, but the learning curve must be huge. SCS should add more detailed options to ETS2/ATS. There are still things that are not simulated in those games.
Best Helicopter to learn to fly in in DCS is the Blackshark. Tutorials are verry good and it has a good stable flight model. the trim is challenging but it's easier that the Huey for learning to hover, ground effect crusing etc. Also having contra rotating rotors not so much torque effect. BTW DCS 2 is awesome. Fight models have been tweaked even more so more realistic handling. AI better as well.
What would be epic would be to add a search and rescue element into the game, if a plane goes down and pilot ejects safely a transport helicopter can go pick him up, bring him back to base and he can spawn another airplane.
Most CASEVAC choppers are armed. There is no statute saying otherwise. It is a warcrime to engage a marked CASEVAC helicopter, it is perfectly legal for it to engage you should you be a threat to it. These operate in frontline hostile situations, it would be ludicrous for them to not have defensive weapons.
+Harry “WarlikeKirbyGames” Kirby Actually, Geneva Convention says that a medevac a/c with a cross on it is not allowed to have mounted weapons. Even if you were to remove the cross, if the a/c is registered as a medevac bird, it's still a no go. The crew is allowed to be armed however.
In the next 12 months this game will get notched up a whole another level with dcs 2.5 caucuasus t4 conversion f/a18c and f14 also strait of hormuz mapand a wholemlot more. Fyi this games current limitation is lack of high detail modules not enough players and as a result only 6 official third partys and last but not least this onlt effects modern modules classifed sysrems. Fyi there is a version of the game used by militarys in training called the battle simulator where classifed stuff is allowed.
Nice to see you going to the DCS :-) One note though, you've misled the Ground Effect and the Translational Lift. The latter is when you transition from the Hover to the Forward speed or the other way around (around 25-35 knots). They are two separate things. Ground effect will actually allow you to lower the collective when going closer to the ground (in hover). Translational lift will require you to increase the collective when slowing down. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translational_lift
Linerunner99 Incorrect. That is an Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigate. FFG 46 is the USS Rentz. And please dont say its not as i served on the Australian versions of the class.
Ahh well, I wasn't expecting decommissioned ships to be in there. We don't even have any active ships of that class any more. That and it looks like a Burke from the flight deck so I got it wrong.
@Strider 1 Yeah it's called not being anal. Like someone who replies to a year old comment just to insult someone. Which also answers your first question... no, no I did not "just" say anything. I said it LONG ago.
Man I was looking for something like this forever. I MUST have this thingy instantly. I had a quick look at steam: Which models I can play with the free version? Best quote of this video: This Huey will try to kill you! LMAO...
the free version comes with the base map, and you are free to fly the SU-25T (russian ground attack aircraft), and the P-51 "trainer" (no guns) i believe. the SU-25T is representative of the aircraft in the FC3 pack, which are generally more user friendly, IE it only takes ~3 key presses to start it up.
Identify Friend or Foe. (IFF) Pretty cool, I was a door-gunner/ crew-chief on Hueys in the early 80's. This looks really cool, but need a collective and cyclic plus pedals before I would really want to try this. I did just buy a joystick, so might give this game a try...
+SpatialDragon I was a combat medic during OIF and when we had to study the Geneva stuff it was more a simple loss of protection under Geneva when you arm a medical vehicle as opposed to not being "legal." Geneva says you're not supposed to shoot at medical vehicles that are playing by the rules but are fair game if armed.
Nah that's entirely down to me. You choose the weapon loadouts and skins in the mission editor. I put guns on it to show them off and a medevac skin because it looks nice and reminds me of MASH.
Sorry I did not simplify it enough for your simple mind Tom Oliverez. Another really strange thing was the way the min-guns which the U.S.Army has not used on Hueys in cobat since Vietnam looked like they went all stealthy and retracted inside the bird. Does not work that way, but it did look cool. But I am sure Tom had mini-guns and rocket pods on his medic truck.

Mythricia It was a joke, I was exaggerating a bit. Regardless, if this was a real helo, I ain't getting in that thing until it has had a hot section inspection. Shit like this can easily cascade into full on engine failure a little down the line if something got damaged.
There were cars and a train moving around too. Neat.
I guess I just never get to the curtain part..... I need a long runway to land the Dora, but at least I do not die as in a Huey. Blades fall off
all the time, but I just learned about watching the exhaust dial and now I can fly around for a long time. Great video and thanks
+Squirrel you forgot the anti collision light... :D Would love to see more of DCS..
DCS is the continuing simulator from Eagle Dynamics, and it has come so far from the original SU27 Flanker sim it came from, it blows my mind.
Your copter is not supposed to send flames out the turbine on start up; it's a sign your throttle is too high. It should be at start-idle. :o
true
Yup, the startup procedure says to put the throttle at lowest, not sure where he was told to do anything else...!
He is confusing the RPM gauge with the Gas Pressure gauge...
HiveWasp yes..... after Start-Up (idle position) you can go to full power. and then you can take off
hot start. flames=bad. haha. cool video!!!!
IFF stands for "Identify Friend or Foe" it's a radar identification system for combat aircraft that lets the pilot identify potential threats
I love this sim and i loved the Huey as well but when i got my Crosswind pedals flying with choppers is over 9000 times better, i fucking love it.
Nice landing on the USS Rentz FFG 46 the "Dread Nought".
could you try the f-15 on the harder version
really loved that.....i thought the noise was REALLY loud until you closedvthe doors lol !! 👍👍👍👍👍🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁
Definitely more DCS! Beautiful game, I just wish it had a mode which was more simplified, I'd give it a go then myself!
that was great I felt air sick, a long time a go when I was in the Army we did a week on the Isle of Man, we had 2 UH1 Helicopters from 366 Squadron AAC Topcliffe a few of us lucky lads got to go up and be flown around the Laxey Wheel the helicopter was shaking like no body's business ( I did not say 633) there really was a 366AAC in the 1970tysthank you for showing us how it's flown
I am in love with this DCS World. Just how bad ass does my PC need to be to install & have a nice play without spending a million bucks?
King Snowman , it need to be a bit beefy. For Single Player missions, I started off with an I5, 1060GTX and 8 GB of RAM. For Multiplayer, I've had to upgrade to 16 GB RAM (barely enough) and a 1070TI. Bit of a RAM hog, but runs decently on medium spec machines
IFF stands for identify friend from foe, its basically a transponder which a secondary radar emits to this transponder and waits for a reply which tells the radar exactly what aircraft it is.
Yup, it's not modelled in the Huey at this time... just the caution display light works (which you can switch off (lower panel/top left sw.)
YAY DCS
finally a simulator with a real challenge
Dude.. that touch and go was an ass quencher.... Yeesh! Great job flying..
Ahhhh finally DCS World and the HUEY! YAY!!! Good luck!
Is that carrier and frigate a mod or in the game.....?
Best Helicopter to learn to fly in in DCS is the Blackshark. Tutorials are verry good and it has a good stable flight model. the trim is challenging but it's easier that the Huey for learning to hover, ground effect crusing etc. Also having contra rotating rotors not so much torque effect. BTW DCS 2 is awesome. Fight models have been tweaked even more so more realistic handling. AI better as well.
Awesome Squirrel, I have relations who flew helicopters in the military and they have told me its "Hard Flying" so great video cheers
Been a mac user for some time ... getting my new PC (for "gaming") tmrw ..
This "game" will be the first thing I install on it ... can hardly wait!
I really need to start flying helicopters. They look so challenging!
this is amazing. the graphics are 100x better than Microsoft Flight Sim!
That was really cool
Flight deck, not heli-pad. Good job flying that Huey!
There aint no flight deck on the frigate cheif. Thats a helipad.
What sound mod are you using for the helo??
Please keep uploading DCS videos!
Very impressed by this Sim, would love to see more DCS vids on here
What would be epic would be to add a search and rescue element into the game, if a plane goes down and pilot ejects safely a transport helicopter can go pick him up, bring him back to base and he can spawn another airplane.
My squadron does this in every multiplayer mission we do. Location of ejected pilots are noted, and a simulated extraction is done
AT LAST DCS, GET IN! Cheers Squirrel, love this game and totally stoked that you're playing it! Thanks buddy👍🏼
Domenico Zagami alto
can't wait for more DCS, thanks Squirrel
Well done. You have flown very well as newcomer.
Only issue with that skin is that dust off choppers aren't allowed to have weapons mounted to them.
+Alec Garmoe I was showing off the guns and skin, that's all
+Squirrel I figured you knew. Either way I love this content so keep up the good work!
7:06 You can get it on Steam for free as well.
iff is so your friendlies know you're friendly
The modeling of USS _Rentz_ was really good. I'm going to have to download this simulator.
The Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight or the CH-47 Chinook would be epic to land on the back of a Cruiser
squirrel you should do enough DCS for a playlist. Awesome Video m8!! you should go into 3rd person a little more.
Nice to see you going to the DCS :-)
One note though, you've misled the Ground Effect and the Translational Lift.
24:26 and 24:36 is where the other F-15 is to the other. Easier to see on the 36 mark.
Oh, he's to the 1000 position from the 2nd bird.
Nice Video. By the way DD stands for Destroyer so in case DCS didnt screw things up, you were landing on a Destroyer.
Agree. I've never heard of a Destroyer referred to as a Frigate !
Definitely a destroyer. Arleigh-Burke Class.
The sound of this game is so awesome! even better than Arma 3 imo. Nice video btw :D
Does track IR have any impact on FPS?
those railing nets on the back of the frigate should be in the down position for all landings and takeoffs
Hello. How can i do the zoom in and zoom out inside the cockpit? Is it possible, to do it also with the mouse wheel? Thanks!
Man I was looking for something like this forever. I MUST have this thingy instantly. I had a quick look at steam: Which models I can play with the free version?
Best quote of this video: This Huey will try to kill you! LMAO...
the free version comes with the base map, and you are free to fly the SU-25T (russian ground attack aircraft), and the P-51 "trainer" (no guns) i believe. the SU-25T is representative of the aircraft in the FC3 pack, which are generally more user friendly, IE it only takes ~3 key presses to start it up.
thanks for showing me this cool game
Mmmmmmm, i like how you explain things. How about some Huey tutoriales!!!
im really looking forward to what mysterys u will get up to on DCS
Great landing. I've got the huey and practice landing on the oil rig.
This game looks really nice
Identify Friend or Foe. (IFF) Pretty cool, I was a door-gunner/ crew-chief on Hueys in the early 80's. This looks really cool, but need a collective and cyclic plus pedals before I would really want to try this. I did just buy a joystick, so might give this game a try...
Kind of cheeky, they have "Medevac" Red Crosses and then mini-guns inside... Not exactly legal according to the Geneva conventions...
+SpatialDragon flamethrowers and mustard gas mortars actually ;)
great vid, thx squirrel!
Btw the other plane is at 24:36
I fly and build collective pitch RC helicopter so nice to see a bit of heli action..an auto rotation at the
end would have been awesome squirrel.. ;)
Red crosses and a minigun, now I like where this going
17:30 thats what i like to is the challenge of flying a helicopter, that is way i love helicopters so much
24:36 The other F-15 is right under the cloud in the middle of the screen
amazing graphics! Nice video.
What controls are you using for the collective?
