This was wonderful. A forgotten part of the city. We used to call this "The Boonies". There is so much development potential here. It really could evolve into a new Venice or Amsterdam!

I agree. I wish I had looked into investing/buying one of the homes some time ago when it was probably cheaper. To have boat access to the Detroit River, Lake St Clair, Lake Erie and a house to boot.. these canals are a great afternoon kayak 👍

Thank you! Super neat area to kayak in my opinion. I plan to kayak it again in a few or so. With all the rain of late, I hope flooding isn't too bad. I used to live down the street a long time again, but not a neat canal front home.

How do you keep from getting lost? How do you find your way back to the parking area?

Hi. It's really easy - no worries at.... No way to get lost ... in my opinion.. Canals here are kind of shaped like a small h only with the long top on the right side and the launch is in the middle - of the h
The two bottom legs of the h take you to the Detroit River (where there's a heavy current and waves) and the top of the h parallels Alter Rd. It's a great kayak ... no current (calm water) or waves (quite safe) in the canals. Also fascinating history to the canals. Would be nice to own home on the canals except for the flooding in the area that is common. You can bring your own kayak or rent one from riverside kayak which is right next to the boat launch. The area is also a popular fishing location. In the middle of the Detroit River just out from these canals is Belle Isle which also has awesome inland canals you can launch at and kayak. I actually like kayaking Belle isle more than here.

@@TheGreatOutdoors Thats great! Thanks for the info. I don't fish, but I recently got a Crescent CK1 and am looking for good places to float. Thanks!

Anything you read on Detroit's canals it always says it's from prohibition but if you look at the old maps you can see when they founded Detroit they dug irrigation ditches for a water source for farming

    • @TheGreatOutdoors

That makes sense. The old ribbon farms. 👌

First discovered these canals, and the bridges spanning them 20 + years ago, while cruising, smoking and drinking trying to"calm"myself early one morning, heading for the riverfront after finding out a woman I dated was"sleeping around"on me,and almost swerved-down inTO one of them,in my "distracted"state, before I decided to return home and settle-down!!

I'll probably re-kayak these canals this sunmer. I usually stop by the park at the end of Alter to fish at least once or twice. I like the area.

That area, like many in Detroit, are slowly being fixed up. Lots of new developments/ homes. Given the water access, I think prices here will go up quite a bit but the area will need ways to prevent floods.

These canals have a parking lot and public boat launch. About $10 in an envelope at the launch. Often an attendant there in a vehicle. Great kayaking and fishing location.

@The Great Outdoors yeah.... I jig for walleye on the river and launch from belle isle. This could be a great location for fishing further up to the river. I'm assuming the bridge is always navigable to get to the river ?

@@ScottHillOutdoors Absolutely. Popular launch location for kayaks, jet skies and boats. It's right at the mouth of Lake St. Clair in the shipping channel.

At night with th hanging willow trees, this would very much resemble Texas or Louisiana in its very flat sea level location.
