CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The comet makes impact in spectacular fashion, destroying the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a "nuclear winter" as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end. President Beck reveals Plan B: a cavernous underground retreat constructed to hold one million Americans, with most to be selected through a national lottery. Since teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, his family gets a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents will be left behind. Meanwhile, still in space, Spurgeon Tanner devises a plan for a kamikaze-styled operation that could possibly save the Earth. Special visual effects by Scott Farrar and Industrial Light & Magic.

1:09,1:14 and 1:23 I love that we can see people who are not running, they know they can do absolutely nothing to escape,It's not bad to be afraid or try to escape, but when you accept that you can't do anything somehow you go calmer, good detail, sad but I love it
At 1:19, you can see three women standing in a circle in the bottom left, the woman in purple is my mom. From what she told me, they were instructed to simply do what they would if they saw a wall of certain death rushing towards them - most people ran, some people cried, my mom and those other women were all rather religious and agreed that they would be praying. The fact that they didn't just tell everyone to run, that they laid out the scenario and just told them to behave how they would - it made those scenes really authentic.

The CGI for this movie is way ahead of its time! Amazing movie.
It was five years after Jurassic Park. Shortly after this they started using it blatantly and more cheaply. "I Am Legend" is a perfect example of arrogant use of cgi.

I just love how there’s no music throughout this entire scene and it doesn’t stay with one shot too long or show too many things happening. Also the story is actually a story that’s original and takes itself seriously. It’s what makes Deep Impact the magnum opus of natural disaster movies, above 2012, Day After Tomorrow, and Armageddon.
For sure, there was not a single dull moment in this movie imo.
Kim Jomg un comet
Makes sense.
I remember seeing this at the theaters. It wasn't an 'action' movie like Armageddon. It wasn't overly melodramatic. And the 'disaster' part leading up to the end was somber. Essentially the way the movie played it, you experienced the exact same emotions as the characters. First fear, then hope, then hoplessness up to the first comet hitting. You deflated every time the President delivered bad news. You seriously had no idea how it was all going to play out. By the time the first comet hit, everyone in the theater wasn't like 'woah!' like with so many disaster movies. It was quiet, just like everyone on screen watching it fly past to do what it was going to do. Definitely my favorite disaster movie. All of it felt real.
@@adamrobinette6832I saw this in May 1998. This is one of my all time favorite movies. My mother and sister went to watch Hope Floats. I think I made the right decision. Great cast and not one dull moment.
I appreciate how the dad and daughter don't try to run. They know there's no way they can survive that so they just hold on to each other and close their eyes.
I remember the crappy blooper of her driving on the empty side of the road to get to him and avoid the traffic. How come no one else thought of that?

Their story is far sadder and more beautiful than that... I recommend watching this movie...!

It's impressive that this sequence came out in 1998. The visuals still hold up today
I think they tried more back then in these cgi disaster films than nowdays (geostorm)
Well they did stay in the physical realm of possibility, except for that they overshot the realistic capability of some scenes that make look just completely fake. The Tsunami waves wouldn't happen like depicted, because for a tsunami to be generated you need to disrupt the entire water column. A Comet or Asteroid for that matter would be having the same effect as dropping a rock in a lake.
Alex Marquette Yeah, but dropping it at or probably way over 20.000 km/h.
Paul Kamin well the water looks a little dated but still better then what we get today
Patrick Cross don't forget Titanic , Sum Of All Fears , Air Force One , Jurassic Park , Saving Private Ryan , Independence Day not all are disaster flicks but kick ass films well done films for the 90s

These were some good graphics back then
Amen
Still pretty good
The comet impact still holds up. Often with dated graphics when a scene is _fully_ CGI it looks decent. It is when you mix CGI with real sets that it starts to look dated. An example is the opening scene the Star Wars 3. Looks just as good as any movie today, up until you see the cockpit with Anakin.
Sam Yeah, but with newer graphics, most fully CGI scenes don't hold up. I mean, look at the Hobbit films.
People = not made from CGI
Tsunami = CGI

You can say anything. Best movie ever made.
I like how the comet's surface shockwave was so powerful it was even kicking up water before it hit the ocean.
Like a bunch of kids running on a playground from the overflowing tub
Dude read a science book, it wasn't kicking up anything, it was flash boiling the water@@geeseday
tbh that's not how it should work. the asteroid travel at 10-70km/s depending on how the orbit and compared to earth velocity and it will reach earth before the shockwave, sound travel less than 1/100 of that. it will pierce the atmosphere like nothing
I feel like some people are missing the /s so.... /s.
I’m an engineer but don’t have the tools to model this. My guess is that if anything the procession wake in this scene understates reality.
Being it created in 1998, seeing the WTC still standing is so relaxing. Before it's smashed by the wave.
Why did they get rid of the world trade centre anyway? Pointless thing to do
That one didn't age so well

0:33 When you see the waves goes further back than it usually is like this, it shows a tsunami is approaching you.
Yes thats how tsunami work
yea it happens because the massive wave sucks the water back
yeah i guees this is a fact for children, but if you ever say Haundae or Tidal Wave (they're both the same movie but with a Japanese and English name), when the water gets sucked back, people just start to book it from the beach. The reason they didn't run however it's because they were accepting they're death, how she finally apologized her father and that they were going to die together
Thats how waves work
Do tsunamis you see in movies like this actually happen in real life?
This scene: exist

In the end we all are just children.
The way she clings to him and says Daddy like a 6 yo... kind of heartbreaking.
But it shows how helpless she feels when the comet strikes and the wave comes in rushing.
And the father is actually what a father should do and at the same time the only thing he can do. Try to comfort his child even though what is going to happen.
Agree
They both knew there was no point in running because they were already dead no matter what
They were just 2 people that knew there was no point and accepted their fate. It was a pretty moving scene though. Everyone else running away from the inevitable while they embraced each other through a dark scary moment. Me personally I dnt know how I would react.
1:51 People on top of building!
"Yeah we're safe...NAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!"
they probably got really wet and then they could just float upward if the water covered it
Wheatley GLADOS the people could probably stay on top of the talllest building as you can see the tallest ones didnt go completely submerged under water
I love how they run from one side to the other. I think the people on top of the building to the right of the Chrysler Building might have survived though.
That's what I was thinking. They manage to get all the way to the very top of that building before the wave comes, thinking they espcaped it, and right when they think they are high enough, they realize the wave is about to wash them all up, lmao.
what about the wave? Lol
just imagine witnessing it
This and the Greenland movie are very powerful movies.
