    Catherine: «Nelly?»
Nelly: «Oh, Cathy! I thought you were Frances, risen from the dead.»
Catherine: «Nelly, will you keep a secret for me?»
Nelly: «Oh, is it worth keeping?»
Catherine: «Today, Edgar Linton asked me to marry him.»
    Nelly: «Oh, well..»
    Catherine: «How shouId I answer?»
Nelly: «Well, really, Miss Cathy, how shouId I know?»
    Catherine: «I accepted him.»
Nelly: «Cathy...Do you Iove Mr. Edgar?»
    Catherine: «Um, of course I do. Of course! I can't heIp it.»
Nelly: «Why do you Iove him, Cathy?»
Catherine: «Uh, because he's handsome and pIeasant to be with.»
    Nelly: «Bad.»
    Catherine: «Because, um... he's young and cheerfuI.»
    Nelly: «Bad still.»
Catherine: «And because he'll be rich. And I shall be the greatest woman of the neighborhood.»
Nelly: «Cathy.. Is that what you really want? Well, marry Mr. Edgar then.Where's your obstacIe?»
Catherine: «Here. In my souI and in my heart, I'm convinced I'm wrong. And if my brother had not put Heathcliff so Iow, I shouIdn't have thought of it. It wouId degrade me to marry Heathcliff now. So he... he'll never know I Iove him. My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries. And I watched and feIt each from the beginning. My Iove for Linton is like.. like foliage in the woods. Time will change it as winter changes the trees. I Iove Heathcliff. He's the... He's like the... eternaI rocks beneath. A... A source of literaI, visibIe delight... but necessary. Nelly... I am Heathcliff.»
    Nelly: «Shh.. »
    Catherine: «Why?»
Nelly: «It's Joseph and Heathcliff might be with him. In fact, I'm not sure he wasn't here earlier.»
Joseph: «Young deviI of a gypsy gets worse and worse. He's Ieft the gate open and took off across the moors.»
Catherine: «No.Go and Iook for him. Call him back.»
    Joseph: «What??»
Catherine: «Now, go after him. Do you think he heard?»
Nelly: «I think he heard something.»
    Catherine: «What? What did I say?»
Nelly: «I think he heard up untiI the bit where you said it wouId degrade you to marry him.»
    Catherine: «Oh.. Heathcliff..»
    Nelly: «Cathy!»
    Catherine: «Heathcliff..»
Nelly: «PIease, come in, Miss Cathy..»

"'My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.-My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being..."

Yes. Cathy was seduced by the glittering lifestyle of the Lintons, and ultimately it destroyed all of them. She married a man she did not really love...and her resulting unhappiness killed her. Heathcliff's heart was broken and all that was good in him died twice - once when she married Edgar, again when she died. Heathcliff took out his grief, his rage and his pain on the Lintons, all of whom suffered for that pain, including Cathy's daughter, his own son, Edgar and his sister. Even Hareton suffered for it.
What, I wonder, would the story have been like if she had never gone to Thrushcross Grange in the first place?

From Darcy to Heathcliff, I thought they were fools. That love was something fictional, only found in worn pages of a book. That it was just made up to keep humans full of hope, that it was a lie. But all that changed since I met my Elizabeth Bennett... ❤️

All credit to Emily...what incredible words she wrote in just this one scene alone. If I could be a fly on the wall during a moment in history it would be to witness the moment Emily or her sister Charlotte wrote such breathtaking lines to be delivered time and time again for hundreds of years. Each time just as touching. I would just scream and cheer her on, like, "YESSSS!!!! YOU NAILED IT !!!!!!!!!!! THATS IT!"

I had given up on any movie ever being faithful in heart, soul, and character to Emily Bronte's story, or of any filmmaker coming even close to my own imaginings of Cathy, Heathcliff, the moors, and the mood of the story - until I saw this version with Juliette and Ralph Fiennes. It met all my hopes and exceeded them, right down to the powerful, deeply haunting score. Kudos all around to everybody. It makes Merle Oberon's and Olivier's performances look like pale, Hollywoodized, polite nonsense. I now own the movie.

Juliette's finest moment in her roller-coaster interpretation of Cathy. This is what she does so well. She doesn't entirely convince me as Cathy due to the lack of wild capriciousness in the interpretation. But here she's all open soul, and very deep. She gives my favorite performance of this important part of the story.
