    What a great performance from this actress. She really captures the Catherine of the novel! But I don’t get why this version and the 1939 version portray Nelly as an older matron like figure; in the novel she’s the same age as Hindley and is like a foster sister to Catherine initially. She’s supposed to be a mother figure to young Cathy and Hareton, but not the elder Catherine. In spite of that this is by far the best screen adaptation of Wuthering Heights because it captures the tone, mood, themes, and characters so well!

    Both Heathcliff and Catherine are insane in their own ways. I don't know why but I love this so much

    If only Heathcliff had stayed long enough to hear the rest. Although if he did the story would end. Wuthering Heights has a certain grip on me. And if he just stayed he might not have become so wretched. And had a child named Cathy.

      1992 version.... the absolute BEST EVER. Seriously. Juliette Binoche, Ralph Fiennes.... my god...

  • @feliciemignon4107
    @feliciemignon4107 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I find Juliette Binoche way too tamed and cheerful to play Cathy. She's always lauģhing or whispering, and when she comes back at the end, she looks more like a saint than a ghost. Cathy is supposed to be creepy, a wild child and a spirit who haunts everyone, even in her lifetime. Juliette Binoche is more like a loving dove than a rabid dog, so I find the BBC version much better... still I don't understand why they chose a white Heathcliff, but i would say their Cathy is perfect.

      Agree. I hate the 2009 version where they even put Heathcliff in Nelly's place talking to Cathy

    • @kristagemini
      @kristagemini 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Watch the 1992 version with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. By far the best version I've seen. They cut out some of the text, but the emotion and heartbreak and everything about it, is absolutely consuming and beautiful and tragic. Seriously, watch that version. Binoche and Fiennes can convey so much, with a simple look. It's spectacular. Watch THAT version, and you'll see real acting.

      The only version showing Nelly the same age as Hindley is WH 1970, starring Timothy Dalton.

    I recently watched this version for the first time. It's great. I'm glad that the scene with Heathcliff and Catherine peeking in the Linton's window is the only version that plays it right. In the book, when they do this they are VERY young teens...Catherine, in fact, has not yet reached her 13th birthday! All the other versions have the adult actors looking in the window...which, in my mind, is rather creepy, even for people who grew up pretty much isolated! The other versions have a grown man and woman looking in a neighbors window,uninvited. This version uses the younger actors for that scene, which is more faithful to the book, and makes more sense.

    some great, very natural characters in this version, like lockwood, nelly dean, heathcliff, joseph, cathy etc. no other version is so faithful to the book and has that wildness about it. hard to get.

      I really liked Lockwood. He was played wonderfully by Richard Kay who also was memorable as Willie Weightman in The Brontes of Haworth 1973. I am hoping to see 1967 with Ian McShane soon.

    Kay is a wonderful actor as is Pat Heywood, however the best scene is later on with Cathy's descent into madness, the bedroom scene when Cathy said she saw a ghost in her looking-glass.

    I have this version on DVD and it is the most true version. However, as it is quite old the set walls move when people shut the doors and you can see the persons wacking the windows with the tree branch at the beginning.

    I agree 100% Nelly has to out live all the chacters in the book, exept for cathy#2 and Harton. I recomend you pick up the the contining story of Wuthering Heights. The book is titled" H". The story of heathcliff's journey back to wuthering Heights by Lin Haire-sargeant. In this book it tell how Nelly kept a letter Heathcliff wrote to Cathy of his Three year abscence and return. the book is out of print but I found it. If you love wuthering heights. You will love this.
