This has always been my favorite version of this song. When I played Penny a few months ago, I chanced singing this just like Diana Degarmo, and the audience died every time. I just hope that Ariana Grande can play the role well for the live broadcast.

She used to play Cat on victorious, which has many of the same characteristics as penny. A high pitch voice, funny, quite ditsy and clumsy but cute at the same time & can sing. So hopefully she will pull it off well.

Except all these theater actors sang 8 times a week live for a hundred times and the film was only done one time and with retakes before they could get one scene right but ok 🙄
Its a whole different ballgame. Film actors have the ability to run a scene multiple times to get it right.. the vocals are mixed and enhanced in a studio and added later, they don't need to dance and sing at the same time..and they dont have to do it 8 times a week

I'm in this show right now in Riverside, and I have to say that the harmonies in this song are absolutely ridiculous. They sound amazing, but damn, Marc Shaiman did not want to make it easy on the performers. And it's super high too. Even the lower voices like the baritones are up in the rafters on this one. I still love it though!

Every version of haarspray I watched (movie and live! Version) I always found the relationships between link/Tracy and Penny/ seaweed cringeworthy.. But boy not this one ! This is epic and the exact reason why I'm obsessed with broadway !
ok so in my school we're doing scenes from hairspray, but we cut out seaweed bc there's no one racially able and comfortable to play him, so we changed the lyrics in this song, but it sounds stupid bc penny doesn't have a boyfriend so it's just her singing about some imaginary dude
