If you want to own a piece of retro nostalgia, like the sound and features, and don't mind the lack of knobs, I'd say it's worth it if you can grab one for a decent price. Not sure I'd spend over $800 personally though.
Oh, this is just gorgeous. Your AX80 looks mint, too. I’ve lusted for one of these since they were advertised in Keyboard Magazine around 1984? Similar to your setup, I’ve got a TC Electronic June-60 chorus pedal and Source Audio Ventris dual reverb pedal that one of these would sound amazing through. Thanks for sharing please keep up the great work! 👍
Thank you Michael! The AX80 is an interesting synth, some like its sound and others do not. Effects can really help bring it to life, as they can for any synth! You've got the right idea with the June 60 chorus and Ventris Reverb. :)
This is totally awesome! What do you think is the best synth to make ambient sounds in combination with pedals like the big sky? This akai one? Access virus indigo 2? Or other ones?
Thanks so much! Regarding your question... tough call but I'd suggest any synth with lots of hands-on tweaking and modulation options. For example, DSI Prophet 12 is digital/analog hybrid and has an insane mod matrix and gives you tons of sound shaping options. Also the Roland V-Synth for time stretching, morphing, sampling etc. The Big Sky sounds great on any synth but if you are looking to create new raw sounds from scratch, the more modulation and knobs the better I say.
@@synth4ever thanks a lot! I've actually been looking at buying the prophet 12 but was waging it against the prophet 6. Still in doubt on that decision and not sure but I'm probably getting one of the 2 :)
Hey Andrew, yes this will be a track on Synthscapes - Vol. 4 once it's released. I don't have a timeframe yet as I still need to put the compilation album together but will keep you posted once it's available!
@@synth4everWonderful! I always find it amusing that when I'm thinking about getting some vintage, underdog synth, I TH-cam the synth and you have a really great demo of it's sound in the form of a great track. Keep up the sublime sounds.
Excellent work man! I really experienced a relaxed feel as I listened to this. I can wait to pick up my Spanish guitar and augment this. And I posted a new vid last Friday. I did a country chord progression with ambient effects. Check it out. And remember, I'm postin' every Friday now so be shure to tune in. And as always, keep up the good work!
This is in my opinion the most beautiful synthesizer ever designed. Peak 80's industrial design.
Yes, the Akai AX80 certainly has a distinct and unique look. I'm sure it was considered very forward thinking at the time.
synth4ever In your opinion, is it worth the 600-1000 dollar price they typically go for?

synth4ever yeah I'm a thrifty musician so I'd be trying to hunt down a cheaper example
Average price in The Netherlands right now: 3500 euros.
That was some of the best ambient I've heard in a while. The kind of thing I grew up listening to.
Thanks for the kind words Tyrion. Appreciate you taking a moment to listen and leave a comment.
Браво! Шикарно!!!
Beautiful Synth and demo, good! :-D
Thank you my friend :)

Will you make this track available on your Bandcamp page?

Is there a recommended person or company who can upgrade my AX-80 for the Tauntek midi ? Who is highly recommended?
You can find a synth repair or electronics technician locally, or send it off to one for upgrade
But what kind of yellow device is this?
Zhurom mxr chorus
it's for the chorus effect
you've proven that these are timetraveler sounds :)
Time travel via AX80 interstellar spaceship! :)
:)

Thanks a lot! This was quite a long piece but I think it flowed very well. I'll check out your latest tune, cheers.
