This is by far I think one of your best videos. An old workhorse modified to lift logs after her working days as a shovel. Now retired and sitting in what looks like a very majestic spot, to rust in peace. Hopefully never to be melted down into cheap throw away junk. These old machines fascinate me to no end. While these machines were meant to make the work easier, operating the machine itself was hard work. Impressive!
It's just nice to know it's still sitting where the operator shut it off that day,and We can walk back decades in history and catch a sense of that day.

It's sad to see old equipment rusting, rotting away in the woods, I commented before after one of your awesome video's if that machine was here in Michigan it would have been scrapped years ago, I hope not, but around us there is many people that scrap. I have a late 40's ton & a half International rear axle & springs that's been next to my garage for 20+ years, I occasionally get someone wanting to haul it away, I tell them I saved it from being scrapped back then...not going to happen now.. Great video's, keep them coming ..
In Kalamazoo, Mich. There is a metal shredder that is busy 5 or 6 days a week. In one area that can be seen from the road, are some old cable backhoes and other old construction stuff, that has sat for some years now. I was told by someone that knows more than I, that he had tried to buy one of the old backhoes several years ago, only that the owner will sell if they meet his price. I have no idea what his asking price was. As of 10 / 2020, they were still seen setting back from the road that goes by the shredder.
Almost everything is still there. Very restorable. Boiler could be restored if the shell passes inspection, or a new one could be built. This is done frequently, in cases where the shell is too thin. A couple boilers currently being built for shovels around here.
Thats a great find, good to know this stuff is still out there and protected for the most part. Looks to be in great shape for where its at. good video.
Back in the early 79's I ran a Marion electric shovel that had the reach to load 120 ton electric drive mine trucks. Mind you the cab was at the machine deck level so it was only possible to see the load when the truck was almost full. That old electric shovel was already decades old when we got it for loading trucks from the crusher stockpile. It had electrical gear in it that the Electrical Manager had no idea what they were. I can only imagine how old that steamer was.
So someone else knows where it is, - a true 'museum' piece - wouldn't it look great just sitting amongst some trees in a true 'logging' museum, not messed with, just left as a tribute to our for-fathers. I know other 'Marion's' exist in museums, - surely everyone is unique - it shows when 'America' could build things that weren't all plastic and 'throw away', and it had a steel industry, - NOT send it all to the Chinese to grow slowly bigger than the US. Already they are quietly acquiring US firms, look at the construction industry CAT lead but they already are being copied and where does the steel come from - CHINA. Look at all the new rail track, where is that made - CHINA. Even food is imported from the 'Far East' and that is but 2 items to name just two, there are many others. I apologise if this seems to have got 'political' but I am merely trying to show some examples, - c'mon US wake up before it's too late, - and the clock is ticking.

Although PERSONALLY and this is ONLY my opinion it is man-made and some either escaped, or, it was released on purpose to see what would happen.
If we all worked together we could get this beautiful piece of history out of the woods. Getting this shovel restored is the least of our concerns now, mostly get it out ship to a new location and the claim ownership (either personal or restoration team). but for those that don't know how it feels to have a historical artifice watch SALVAGE SQUAD.
Now that I'm 66 years old and I look back I used to crawl around in that kind of stuff I didn't understand how it worked or what's the huge accomplishments that they did they were sitting by old gravel pits that were 18 ft deep and full of water like Lakes some of those steam shovels are still under the lake now that I think back there was even a working model the old man told me out in his gravel pit that he had sold just a couple years previously a steamer and working condition this was only about 20 years ago or so Wisconsin over and out thanks PS reminds me of now going through old junk yards me and my brother Dan used to go and crawl through those junk yards of old cars and man were they cool
When I was a kid in the 60's, we still called a front end loader a steam shovel. I'm no expert, but I don't think any of them were powered by steam, it's just a name that stuck. I love the look and simplicity of those old machines.
I've never been interested in old fashion steam shovels before but thinking about an old cartoon called Mike Mulligan and Maryann gets me interested in them now' I've never seen a steam shovel in public or even had a small toy as a little kid but old shovels like these or different ones like this, it's never too late on knowing them now' if you saw how these shovels worked as a kid. It's never too late on knowing how to drive one now' there the best!
I think after Skadill finds em, they pretty much have protected status as he never reveals their exact location, as always, another great find and awesome video

Likely there was no road, but instead a cleared patch of old growth where a contractor clumsily left his equipment parked then forgot about it. New trees and shrubbery took over in a couple years and it is now hidden away, a bit sad to see, but peaceful at the same time. A happy place where machines go to after they retire
Sad to see this rotting away.. If you search for the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion we run a Marion, and 2 bucyrus erie steam shovels every Labor Day weekend. Quite a sight to see these bohemothes operating as they did in the past.

Might have been wood/coal fired, then converted to an oil burner?? If those were oil tanks... May have been water tanks too... Beautiful old gal, parked in a pretty safe place!

They run oil as a fuel for the boiler,like gas for your furnace,propane for a bbq,or coal or wood.Any burnable heat source to boil water to make steam to create preesure for power.
why is everybody talking about getting it out of there? it sits perfectly where it is. it is like a piece of art there. if you restore it the whole story gets lost. if you leave it there, every hiker that comes arcoss this beauty will let their imagination run free to what happend to it in the past. i think that is much more valuable then restoring it.

Her engine is missing a connecting rod, and possibly the crosshead, otherwise she seems reasonably intact. From what I saw during some American tours, she'll still be sitting there in 100 years time! I hope she's not in a national park, though, as if so, she's condemned to sit there for all eternity!
The bottom missing on the boiler is just the bottom of the fire box. The boiler still seems to be intact. The bins on either side of the boiler are the water storage tanks. I do not seen to see any of the steam motors, there were several. They were probably all scavenged and sold long ago being worth some $$$.
When I first saw "Steam Shovel" I was thinking it was used in the "Steamroller" sense... but no. REAL steam shovel! It is pretty cool. I wonder how much of a PITA it was to drag a big-ass air compressor around with this machine. And then all it did, apparently, was knock logs off of trailers and into the drink. Seems like a lot of flaming hoops for not much payoff. In other words -- like my last relationship. But enough about that. Great vid. Thanks for the hike.

It is so land locked,it's impractical.It's on a steep hillside and the gravel road down to it has slid in and is only a foot path.It is only accessible by hike currently.
I know you have a very strict policy of not divulging the whereabouts of any of your finds. Surely with this machine, - which must be unique in the way it has been used, a genuine 'logging museum' and I do mean genuine would love to try and rescue it . I am not referring to one person in particular, but a museum who possibly would keep it in "as found" condition for the enjoyment of generations to come. I know of several museums in the UK (where I live) that have acquired similar items on the understanding that the item will never be disposed of and are kept in 'as found' condition. After all it is coming up to being 100 years old. - Or is your country overrun with these type of machines all preserved, in ours you could count the number on one hand and still have a finger or so to spare.

I though there was a video or some documentary of some guys trying to restore an old steam shovel in the middle of a forest but cant seem to locate it. I think they tried to use compressed air to get it running.
I still believe the best way to get it out of there would be the river,as less trees would have to be cut down and the guy says there is no good road access to the area. I am just saying that, in hopes that someone could save this almost complete Steam-Shovel. This Shovel was built back in the day when we built things that lasted a long time. Maybe this Guy and some People he knows could form a Historic Society,or Group and pool their Money to get the job done. From his accent I believe this Shovel is probably in Minnesota. There are a few Companies in the U.S. who can build a replacement Boiler for this Shovel with no problem,and I would be willing to bet that the Drawings and Measurements still exist for this Model-Shovel.
Its in Canada. Very true, trees grow back 100 year old steam shovels dont. It would have to be disassembled and hauled out piece by piece with a small tractor or something of that nature!

Keith Smigle The engines are there, both the firebox and smokebox flue sheets look intact, seems like a good boiler.

It would cost tens of thousands if not more to move it then probably a hell of a lot lore to refurbish it

Its in Canada. Very true, trees grow back 100 year old steam shovels dont. It would have to be disassembled and hauled out piece by piece with a small tractor or something of that nature!

iarna poate fi folosit la incalzit casa cu abur plimbat prin calorifere din fonta , aluminiu sau incalziri sub pardoseala cu grilaj deasupra langa peretii exteriori , geamuri etc , fara pompe , fara curent , ca incalzirea la vagoane .. Aburul se poate folosi si la gatit , apa preincalzita la spalat haine , corp etc .
Un semineu , cuptor sau centrala de incalzit cu lemne , nu poate fi folosit la produs bani la dezapeziri , lucrari in gradini ..

in Canada langa Fort MC murray , ce zeci de ani in care padurarii si comunitatea a impadurit fiecare spatiu gol din padure . Dupa incendiile uriase din 2016 , pompierii au ajuns sa incendieze intentionat sute de hectare de padure ca sa creeze fasii goale la care viitoare incendii de padure sa se opreasca si sa nu mai ajunga in oras . Ar trebui amenajate raurile din zona Fort Mc murray , ca sa poata fi transportati bustenii pe rau primavara sau cand sunt ploi torentiale sau tot anul . Precis undeva in Canada sau in Africa etc este nevoie de lemn pt foc , sau pt consolidat maluri de rauri , parapeti la drumuri , calea ferata care sa tina versantii , sau butoaie uriase pt stocat apa de ploaie ..

I did Enjoy it , Thank you . If only these nice old machines could talk , the stories they could tell . Was that Big foot walking Behind it at about 3:45 ? This year I took pictures of a 91 Marion Episode #130 . They parked it on top of the quarry in 1949 . They are Awesome Machines .
I did enjoy it. its very cool. In contrast to a modern excavator how was it operated? aka what levers did what etc.
I'm sure it was quite a machine in its day.
Get an air compressor we wanna see it running lol
