Hi Mike, Yes you can use to your own provided ground rod. Check your local regulations for the correct rod length. When on top of tall commercial rooftops, I have used the nearest, thin copper pipes that are attached to hvac units with permission from building management.

It's not recommended, however it's better than no ground at all.
