Great review. Im not sure if anyone else pointed this out, but the USB port you said was for the PS4 chat is only the charging port for the headset. The micro usb in the back of the mix amp is the one that connects to the console for chat, and supplies the power.
Awesome review really informative and great buyer advice. I picked these up yesterday, amazing headset I have never owned Astro's previous to these and I was blown away. I purchased the Sennheiser g4me zero and ended up returning them & exchanged for the A50's best decision I could have made, no comparison in my opinion.
Just got this headset because of this review. I had the old a40s for over 2 years and they recently broke(due to my dogs). They were on sale at my Best Buy for only 200$ so I new I had to grab these. After playing with them for over a week, I can honestly say they are probably the best headset. I've tried turtle beaches, tritton and those don't compare to the a50s. Definitely pick these up guys!!!
I have the old a50s and bought a pair of the gen2 a50s a few days ago. While there are some minor issues consistent with the gen1s. The gen2s definitely sound better. They are less bassy, clearer and have better sound separation. If you don't already have an a50 I recommend the gen2s.
just got one of these today and I've never had a high end gaming headset so its pretty amazing to me. The sound and bass is freakin amazing. Good review. Like you said would be cool if you could charged on the hanger :)
Love this great in depth review Briar!! I'm actually getting ready to buy these and you just helped me make up my mind... I have been using the Delta force mw3 edition turtle beach headset for some time now... I absolutely love the 7.1 Surround Sound that I get with these turtle beaches but they were never comfortable for long game sessions and they would end up hurting my ears from pushing in on them due to the ear cup not going around the ear... But my biggest problem with the wireless ones I have now is that I get interference when my son uses his phone or anything that uses wireless for that matter.... So I'm a little weary about going wireless...
I just got the new Astro A50 yesterday, and i think it is awsome. I used Steelseries and Turtle Beach before, but i Think Astro is the best :) never used the old A50, so I hope it was not a dumb thing to buy the new one? haha anyways.. love the video man, keep it up :)
Can you do a xbox one setup guide, (software too)? Should i buy this ones or the xbox one ones( i have an xbox one) but i really do like more the color on the ps4 ones, and they match with both my xbox one and xbox 360 controllers cause they are both blue, please respond. Love your videos btw
I have A50s Gen 1. How much of a change in audio quality is there from gen 1 to gen 2? How much better is the mic? Also you mentioned the band is tighter. I have an issue with Gen 1, that if I lean forward or backward too much the headset will fall loose off my head. Is Gen 2's band tight enough to maintain position when you lean forward or backward? Although you said you would not recommend upgrading to Gen 2 from Gen 1, but for the audio elitists, would the audio quality and mic quality be noticeable enough to be worth the upgrade? Additionally, thank you for actually making some comparison between Gen 1 and Gen 2 of the A50s. So far you're the only video that actually included such a comparison.
I ordered the A50's. It's an upgrade from my A30 from I don't know how old they are. I'm a couch player not really a monitor guy even though I would love to, my life style doesn't work that way. Thanks for the review, I'm sure I'll be very happy
The mic test didn't seem to be too much worse than what you used to record the video. I'm assuming game chat will be a bit more compresssed. I'm on the fence with buying these for my Xbox One. Your review has me leaning toward yes, especially since they seem like they would be more comfortable than my current, old Turtle Beach set. The earcups on that thing are just so rough and scratchy and they don't have a great fit. The thing that still makes me hesitant is the game chat quality issues on Xbox Live that have been noted by several users. Based on your mic test and other mic tests of the new A50's, it doesn't appear to be a microphone issue, but rather a mic connection or adapter issue. I'm wondering if it would work better using the Xbox adapter instead of the one supplied by Astro.
Great Review Briar Rabbit! Quick question though. For Gaming, would you prefer the sound of this Astro A50? Or do you like the sound of the Astro A40 better? $50 difference, I'm trying to decide which is the better buy
I was deciding on getting this headset and was wondering if I need to purchase any additional spliters/cables to use this headset on my PC for skyping while playing games. Thank you
I'm interested in purchasing this headset for gaming and as well as Streaming! Would you say the microphone is good enough for streaming? or would you suggest using another microphone instead?
Great review. I have a question though. You said the a50 works with Xbox one but I wanna make sure it still has complete dolby surround sound even though it's going through Microsoft's proprietary port on the controller. Thank you for your help.
hi im a Big Fan of ur channel ...i was woundering wat mic was better ( a40s or a50s) For the ps4 or works better With ps4...i hear people have Problems talking to other people sum times on Psn. even after Firmware Update
I bought my son an A40 headset, and I'm amazed how comfortable they are. The size of the ear cups is perfect for my ears to fit inside. That's why I'm considering the A50 for myself. Question: Does the battery have to be charged for the aux audio input to work connected to a phone for music? Also, I don't totally need a mic... are there any headphones that are as comfortable as the A50/A40 at the same price or less?
I actually bought this headset because of your review and it WAS the perfect headset but it had one fatal deal breaker for me which was the buzzing in the right earcup during chat, apparently there is no known fix an Astro supports answer is "play game volume loud enough to not hear it" Extremely disappointing. What would you recommend if I liked this headset that doesn't have horrible audio feedback from the mic and is lighter because other than those two flaws this thing had everything I wanted. It even worked on my PC and ps4 together...
Gidrah i could update mine both the transmitter and headset. it dit not have latest. mine is the new one also. and after i updated it. that little buzzing sound dissapeared
thinking to get these. .If I run the spdif cable from the Xbox one to the receiver will it work or I have to plug a 3.5 mm to the headset..?? thanks nice review btw:
Good informative review. Still debating between Astro A50 or Turtle Beach Elite 800. No place in my area of the UK to try before I buy :( So much $£ too! Look forward to your Elite 800 review :)
Briar, I just picked up the a50s and I notice some white noise in the background when there's no audio going through. It becomes louder when I increase the master volume. Is this something you're noticing?
I know im late to the Party, im looking foward to buying some but i have 2 question's, are the old Astro A50s 7.1 sorround sound? and witch would you recomend to me
How are these with canceling out background noise? I love how I cannot hear much of anything outside of the audio on my TBs but they are broken and I am searching for something to replace them. Also, have you done or do you plan on a review for the Astro A40 + M80?
So I´ve never owned a astro headset before so i´m not that familiar with their products but should´t a Mix amp go along with the headset or does the Tx replace it?
Are The New/Old Astro A50's significantly better than the Turtle Beach PX4 when it comes to sound quality, mic quality and comfotability? Great Video by the way
So.. The Orange ones are the 2012 edition, and these blue are 2015, is that correct? Is there ANY kind of difference in soundquality or is it the same? They seems to be quite the same..
I just looked in at the bottom of my headset to try and plug them into my tablet but the cable that fits into the older a50 headset doesn't use a 3.5mm jack to plug into it. Does the new a50s use a 3.5 our is it the smaller jack as well?
Jesse Tarrant You're not really answering to his question ... But yes, I believe the Xbox One edition does work with PS4 and PC. I don't understand why the Xbox One edition is 50$ less then the PS4 version ...
I'm looking for a wireless headset for my ps4 and is it really worth the extra money to get these over the Sony gold ones? From this video they seem a lot better but it's more than double the price
I second that. What is the average life of the battery? Can the battery be easily replaced when it eventually dies? Seems like a lot of money for something without an accessible battery compartment. This point alone could influence my decision to instead buy the Astro A40.
I have only ever had Turtle Beach and Astro A40 headsets, but the Turtle Beach's were terrible with comfort (at least the ones I had). My astros were amazingly comfortable. Are there any other, less expensive, comfortable headsets other than Astro?
I do have a question though. I have long hang and with my old headset, my hair sometimes got stuck in it which hurted alot because I had to pull it from my head with my hair. Is this the same case with this headset?
I been using Audio Technica AD700 headphones with the Astro mix amp i got with Astro A30 on 360 and xbox one and the gaming surround sound is great. The sound goes in and out because the wire on headphone is going bad. I need new headphone should i get the turtle beach stealth 500x, 2015 astro a50, astro 2015 a40 or Audio Technica ADG1 and use it with the mix amp i have. Thanks for any help :)
Hey Briar how long does it take to charge, and how long does the charge last? Does the mixer have an audio output where I can record like the A40 mix amp. Thanks for the review. One last thing, A50 or A40 which one sounds better.
I just bought and returned the A40's in exchange for the A50's (only because the A50's are wireless) and I do not notice a considerable difference in whether or not one sounds better than the other.
I honestly prefer the A40s. The only thing bad about the A40s is the wires, but you don't have to worry about losing connection, like you would with any wireless headset. Still very nice, though.
Briar love the reviews bro!;) one question I like the blue and black a50s but on the box they say ps4/PS3, I would like to know are they compatible with the Xbox one if I already have the chat adapter...?!;)
Question! How is your charging, does your light turn red when its actually full of charge?...mine just stays orange for 4-5 hours of charging. any ideas?
What about the mic for the game chat? I have a friend who owns the previous model and his mic sounds terrible. It's really scratchy. That's the reason why I returned my a50s when I first got them
Briar, please help. Today I got a pair of 2nd generation a50's. The optical cable connections seam loose on BOTH ends, that is to the ps4, and, the TX box. Especially compared to the optical cable connections on my turtle beach px4's. Don't snap into place, and, are not snug like on the TB px4. IS this normal?
I'm subscribing seem like a cool dude, can you please review the brand new astro a40s so I can decide if I want the new a50s or the new a40s.(I own the 2012 astro a40 but the quick adapter cable stopped working 2 days ago, probably because I accidentally ran over the cable with my computer chair) but over than that never had a single problem with the a40, I'm thinking about going wireless so if you could somehow get ur hands on the a40s I would really appreciate it
does this need to be charged when plugged into a tablet, or will it run out? im just wondering if it's plugged into something like a tablet and you're watching a movie, is it turned on by the tablet like a normal headsset, or does it still rely on charge? please answer!
I just bought the elite 800s I feel like I'm he volume is too low it needs a little more for my preference specially when I'm in a party and playin I even tried adjusting the settings and making the game louder and I still feel it needs more are the a50s louder? Do they sound better than the 800s PLEASE REPLY SOON I ONLY HAVE 10 Days To Exchange Them Thanks
Yo Briar, I really want to say your reviews are top class and you really deserve more subs. Keep up the amazing content, and my question is.... Can you send me a pair ;) 😂 please
I have the Astro A50 Gen 1, I really want to know what the differences between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 are. I don't see any difference other than the mic shape.
Is there a difference between the old gen (2012) Astro A50s and the 2015 version in terms of sound quality? I'm currently using the 2012 Astro A50s on my Xbox One and I do notice a difference in small audio details like enemy footsteps and gun shots. Feels out of sync and I have a harder time pinpointing my enemies, just wanna see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. I was thinking maybe I have to purchase an Xbox One version headset to fix this problem?
You said you can buy a longer cable to charge it but does it have to be a specific cable from astro or can it just be like for example a usb - micro usb cable that came with my Turtle Beach PX4 because that cable is super long?
The older Astro A50s use mini usb (the same as a PS3 controller) to charge, and the newer A50s use micro usb (like most smart phones, and the PS4 controller).
Hey, what about charning duration from zero to full? And maybe stu*id question but, what kind of battery is inside haedset? Would like to know if is something bad when i charge if battery is not comletely empty...if battery lose there full charge. Please tell me more about this and I will take one set ;) Or you suggesting something better?
Just wondering that why on earth does the mixamp only have input for one device at a time. if i want to switch from ps4 to pc i have to switch all the cables too.
You really do make the best headsets reviews and unboxings
The mic quality sounded very good. If a youtuber used that for commentaries, I would never even think about the mic being bad.
Finally, a review video for the A50 from this year...
Great review. Im not sure if anyone else pointed this out, but the USB port you said was for the PS4 chat is only the charging port for the headset. The micro usb in the back of the mix amp is the one that connects to the console for chat, and supplies the power.
Awesome review really informative and great buyer advice.

Thank you for your revIews I was in between this and the turtle beach 800. I went with the A50s and I am loving then!
Watched your A40 review also. Really enjoy your videos so far, keep it up :) You earned yourself a sub.
I have the old a50s and bought a pair of the gen2 a50s a few days ago. While there are some minor issues consistent with the gen1s. The gen2s definitely sound better. They are less bassy, clearer and have better sound separation. If you don't already have an a50 I recommend the gen2s.
Man they even have a master chief xbox one version of this headset! I'll probably get those this Christmas.
Did he get his headset!!?? 😳🤔
just got one of these today and I've never had a high end gaming headset so its pretty amazing to me. The sound and bass is freakin amazing. Good review. Like you said would be cool if you could charged on the hanger :)
Late to the party but I just grab one of these, OMG, the sound is outstanding ! wow ...
and very comfortable
Would love to see a comparison to the TB Elite 800 before I spend 300 on a headset. Love your reviews. Thank you for all the work.
Love this great in depth review Briar!! I'm actually getting ready to buy these and you just helped me make up my mind... Keep doing what your doing you are great at what you do! Best TH-cam channel always explain everything. Thank you!

Thanks for the review. This was definitely the best review I found and made my decision easier.

I'll let you know. The headset is on its way. The shipping is a little slow. Might have to wait til Monday
How does the mic connect? Bluetooth or?
Hey Briar, have you experienced a buzz in the right ear cup when the mic detects any sound? Thanks. Great vid btw!! 😀
The mic test didn't seem to be too much worse than what you used to record the video. I'm assuming game chat will be a bit more compresssed. I'm on the fence with buying these for my Xbox One. Great Review Briar Rabbit! Quick question though. For Gaming, would you prefer the sound of this Astro A50? Or do you like the sound of the Astro A40 better? $50 difference, I'm trying to decide which is the better buy
u sounded exactly the same in the video when as u did in the A50 mic test at the end
After watching this and your a40 review I am so glad i got the a50's purely because i am done dealing with wires out the ass
I was deciding on getting this headset and was wondering if I need to purchase any additional spliters/cables to use this headset on my PC for skyping while playing games. Thank you
You make such good reviews:) Better than any other gaming headset reviews:)
Really, really good review man! Keep it up :)

It was the gen 2 its already updated, but yes I tried and it said it was the most current.
Gidrah i could update mine both the transmitter and headset. it dit not have latest. mine is the new one also. and after i updated it. that little buzzing sound dissapeared
I don't have that issue...
Meh, I went with the Steel Series H wireless and never looking back.
I got a pair of them yesterday for xbox one and they work amazing.
How's the surround sound? I wanna use it for fps like call of duty and I wanna hear footsteps..
thinking to get these. .If I run the spdif cable from the Xbox one to the receiver will it work or I have to plug a 3.5 mm to the headset..?? thanks nice review btw:
Good informative review. Still debating between Astro A50 or Turtle Beach Elite 800. No place in my area of the UK to try before I buy :( So much $£ too! Look forward to your Elite 800 review :)
Briar, I just picked up the a50s and I notice some white noise in the background when there's no audio going through. It becomes louder when I increase the master volume. Is this something you're noticing?
Does the newer a50 still have the wobble on the side of the ear cup
What kind of cable do you use to hear music? I tried using a 3.5 mm cable but it doesnt fit into the headaset...???
2.5mm to 3.5mm cable will do
I know im late to the Party, im looking foward to buying some but i have 2 question's, are the old Astro A50s 7.1 sorround sound? and witch would you recomend to me

Are The New/Old Astro A50's significantly better than the Turtle Beach PX4 when it comes to sound quality, mic quality and comfotability?
Great Video by the way
Wow the astro A50 Headset looks great they sound good too another great review.
So.. The Orange ones are the 2012 edition, and these blue are 2015, is that correct? Is there ANY kind of difference in soundquality or is it the same? They seems to be quite the same..
Does the Astro A50 have a 2.5mm or 3.5mm jack on the headset for optional wired experience? (For use on ipod, phones, etc without the transmitter?)
What is the battery life for this? And is the charge cord really that short? Can I get a longer charge cable???
I just looked in at the bottom of my headset to try and plug them into my tablet but the cable that fits into the older a50 headset doesn't use a 3.5mm jack to plug into it. Does the new a50s use a 3.5 our is it the smaller jack as well?
Awesome review, I just pick up the xbox one edition. The Sound is freaking great!
Astro a50s have amazing sound quality...while the mic is off. When the mic is picking up sound the right ear makes a buzzing sound
Yep, but it is totally ignorable
Hey,
I'm considering to buy a ps4 headset but I dont know if I should buy the A40 or the A50. What do you recommend?
Great vid. Just to clarify, the xbox edition works with PS4/Xbox/PC/Mac and the only thing different is the color and an extra port?
Ps4 one looks much nicer
Jesse Tarrant You're not really answering to his question ... But yes, I believe the Xbox One edition does work with PS4 and PC. I don't understand why the Xbox One edition is 50$ less then the PS4 version ...
I have the a40 tr on my third pair and each had this weird metallic echo sound, I'm thinking of getting the a50 what do you think
What's the battery life like, how many hours of game play could you get from a full charge?
What's the difference between Gen2 and Gen1 in terms of sound quaility? Do they sound exactly the same?
I'm looking for a wireless headset for my ps4 and is it really worth the extra money to get these over the Sony gold ones? From this video they seem a lot better but it's more than double the price
Briar when will you be reviewing/will you be reviewing the newest model that comes out August 27th
Would you recommend these over the a40 model?
i have a pair of turtle beach px5s would you say the astro a50 be a big upgrade?
do u know if they are in the process of making the astros a60?? and if they are will the microphone be much much better??
Is this headset durable? I heard that there's a buzzing sound in the right ear cup and that sometimes the headset does not respond etc.
I just have on question before i buy.. How is the mic quality? It's a really big deal and yet i dont see people talking about it too much
I do have a question though.
When do you think that the astro a60s or warheads for xbox one will come out?
Hey Briar how long does it take to charge, and how long does the charge last? Does the mixer have an audio output where I can record like the A40 mix amp. Thanks for the review. One last thing, A50 or A40 which one sounds better.
I just bought and returned the A40's in exchange for the A50's (only because the A50's are wireless) and I do not notice a considerable difference in whether or not one sounds better than the other.
Rawk One Thanks, appreciate the reply
I honestly prefer the A40s. The only thing bad about the A40s is the wires, but you don't have to worry about losing connection, like you would with any wireless headset. Still very nice, though.
How do you use the dolby button on the transmitter I have it on my ps4 and when I click the button I don't hear sny sound difference
How long does it take to charge fully and how long does the power last?
Are these worth getting for the ps4 as I'm thinking of buying the new 2.0 ps4 exclusive headset not sure wich one to get ?
Having a hard time finding a charging cable for these what kind of charging cable do I need that will plug into those to a charger in the wall
Does it have mic monitoring? How does mic monitoring comepare to the last version?
good review but I have one question do the old A50s work with all three of the PS4, xbox 360 and ps3
+james McIntyre You clearly didn't watch the entire review. He states at the end that the old A50 works with current gen.
just checking jesus
Briar love the reviews bro!;) one question I like the blue and black a50s but on the box they say ps4/PS3, I would like to know are they compatible with the Xbox one if I already have the chat adapter...?!;)
Yup, they are compatible if you have the Headset adapter.
Briar Rabbit I also have resolved that doubt but wondered how to get the cable from the headset to ADAPTOR
Can you plz do a review on the Astro a40 2015
Question! How is your charging, does your light turn red when its actually full of charge?...mine just stays orange for 4-5 hours of charging. any ideas?
Will I be able to chat with these on the Xbox One or do I need to get the Xbox One pair? I have both systems PS4 & Xbox One but mainly use PS4.
What about the mic for the game chat? I have a friend who owns the previous model and his mic sounds terrible. It's really scratchy. That's the reason why I returned my a50s when I first got them
so can I charge it without the receiver? like direct connection to a wall socket? thanks
how do you conected your astros to your pc talking with your friend at the same time listening you game
It depends on the load but you'd already loaded to use the tablet
I just bought the elite 800s I feel like I'm he volume is too low it needs a little more for my preference specially when I'm in a party and playin I even tried adjusting the settings and making the game louder and I still feel it needs more are the a50s louder? Do they sound better than the 800s PLEASE REPLY SOON I ONLY HAVE 10 Days To Exchange Them Thanks
I'm srsly doubing between a A40 and A50 now... I must say the microphone test in this video sounds better?
Once you disconnect the headphone from the mixamp after being out of range, does it automatically reconnect?
DA2THFA1RY ohh ok, thanks!
Also curious if the Xboxone will work with other systems as well
Hey, what about charning duration from zero to full?

Do the ear cups wear out over time? Like flattening or anything?
no
So if you were to put the Xbox One chat cable from the Xbox edition to the ps4 headset will it work
Just wondering that why on earth does the mixamp only have input for one device at a time. if i want to switch from ps4 to pc i have to switch all the cables too.
i was wondering how long ittakes to charge and how much battery time it has?
