  • Die Zauberflöte,K.620, Overture by The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra conducted by James Levine:
Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute in German, K. 620) is an opera in two acts composed in 1791 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form that included both singing and spoken dialogue.
The opera was premiered in Vienna on September 30, 1791, at the suburban Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden. Mozart conducted the orchestra, Schikaneder himself played Papageno, while the role of the Queen of the Night was sung by Mozart's sister-in-law Josepha Hofer.
Overview: Sarastro, the wise priest of Isis and Osiris, has taken Pamina to the temple for the purpose of releasing her from the influence of her mother, the Queen of the Night. The queen induces the young Prince Tamino to go in search of her daughter and free her from the power of Sarastro(Recitative and aria: "O zittre nicht, mein lieber Sohn"). Tamino accomplishes his end, but becomes the disciple of Sarastro, whose mildness and wisdom he has learned to admire. The prince and the princess are united.

This is by far the best version on TH-cam. Especially the trombones at the end, no one does it better than Levine

From 5:35 to 5:57 he is having a private conversation with Mozart. I wish I knew what Mozart was telling him, but they are both pleased.

Levine was a very good interpreter of Mozart. This is one of the prime examples why it's worth finding his interpretations.

Lucid but still deep, well balanced and performed in a breathtaking tempo-Levine is a great Mozart conductor-thanks for posting!!!

I adore Levine’s interpretation, because he seems to find some Wagner in this Mozart, which brings out the most beautiful colors, and Die Strahlen der Sonne.

5:37 and 5:50 - I’ve listened to this overture more times than I can count but I never caught the glorious drum beats running under the melody in these moments until I saw Levine miming those drum beats in this video.

Spettacolare come fa risaltare le linee interne del contrappunto, inoltre estremamente efficace come sonorità i tre accordi che nel finale i tromboni "americani" mettono in bella luce. Bravissimo Maestro!
