  • It is late June and it sure is hot in Southwest Missouri. We have had 15 days so far over 100 degrees and no rain to speak of. So, how are the quail handling the heat? In this video I discuss what you can do to ensure that your quail are comfortable all summer long.

We had the same in sw Oklahoma in June. Triple digits came early. But Thus far in July has been bad. We got to 114 last week. 107 today. We sold our quail but to be safe for our chickens, we bought a small air conditioner for both coops. Never done that before! Stay safe folks and God bless!

Thanks for this advice. My wife was concerned that her button and meat quail were getting too hot so I installed a fan for ventilation. Like you we have had zero precipitation and it’s been near 110° here in talty texas many days in a row. Birds seem fine as you stated! Cheers!

North central Arkansas here; We have had the same heatwave and all my birds are fine. I do have an outdoor cage, on the ground, and covered on top. My quail just dirt bathe all day long to stay cool. Still laying fertile eggs and never skip a beat in the heat. Thanks Chris :)

I've lost quail due to heatstroke. One chicken passed. The rabbits are doing fine, But they suffer. (Belgium). I'm changing my whole system to account for coming heatwaves and flooding. To the drawing board!

Hi Maria…my husband and I live in Arizona as well, and we are looking to raise quail…what type of quail do you raise? Is there a certain type that is more heat tolerant?

Hi, Chris! Here on the McAlester Quail Trail we have been seeing similar temperatures as you. While our birds are in an enclosed shed in Wynola cages, I have been leaving fans going and the window opened. I have also been putting out frozen bottles of ice twice a day and the birds cuddle right up to it. In my larger grow out cage I have taken butter bowls sealed shut with blue ice packets in it - the younger birds also are up against it a lot. Different strokes and all, but the ice seems to make our birds happy!

I'm one of those worry warts that takes frozen water bottles out to their cage in heat of day! And puts chunks of ice in the water container. And provides a shallow water dish for their 'foot baths" ! They love a foot bath!

Would you advise keeping quail in a rabbit hutch outside? I saw a few 2 story options that allow them to walk in the bare grass underneath. I'll try to share with you on Amazon.

I want to get quail what is the basic care for them, I have a garage, I can put Air conditioner in for them, we have hot and humidty up to 109 degrees. I have air conditioning for my rabbits. The bunny room is about 75 degrees. Is that the ideal temperature for the animals?
