That’s why Larry Graham is the 🐐. The man reinvented the freakin instrument. Slapping and popping made up for the lack of drums with him and his mother when they played together… Brilliant.

@@wolfspiritoutdoors1484 I think somehow in these comments people think I’m dogging Stanley Clarke. First of all I absolutely love Stanley Clarke. I sat in my room for two days straight trying to perfect the school days solo. ( still don’t have it perfect) I was just saying that it is widely agreed that Larry Graham was one of the first to slap on electric bass. If you want to get really technical people say jazz musicians were doing it on their double bass and acoustic guitars as far back as 1910.

In my opinion, Bass is a rhythmic instrument. You don't have to play a lot of notes, just choose a few, then makem groove !
It's basically like choosing a new tuning for your set of 4 bongos, every song.

Larry Graham is the "Father of modern bass playing" period. Nobody... applied the "thump-slap-n-pop" method to the ELECTRIC BASS before HE DID IT and he did it out of necessity in CHURCH... BEFORE Sly and the Family Stone. That's where Sly found him and WHY Sly came for him! Sly was told about this guy in Church doing unheard of things on electric bass and he checked him out and the rest his history. And as for Stanley? Stanley Clarke himself wrote in the sleeve notes of his album "If This Bass Could Only Talk" that HE DID NOT INVENT THE METHOD, but rather HE TOO got it from... wait for it... LARRY GRAHAM. The reason people are here debating in the first place is because here... Marcus Miller is paying HOMAGE to... LARRY GRAHAM. Every ELECTRIC bass player that we all individually like today has to thank Larry Graham. He solely changed the paradigm of electric bass playing for all of us who followed (yes I'm in the bass playing family too 👍🏽). He's the Giant who's shoulders we all stand on today when we slap away at our round wound strings to listeners delight 🎸✊🏽

For me , the first song I ever tried to slap was "Slide" by Slave. Slapping never became a major style for me. I'm more of a finger style player. My heroes were Jameson, Jackson, Rocco, and Jaco (RIP all you musical gods 🙏🙏🙏). And all of James Brown's bassists. Today it's Richard Bona and Victor Wooten. But even though I never mastered the slap, I still always love listening to the godfather Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Mark King, and Flea.

Oh yeah babè! Nothing drives the tune like the beat of the Bass.
It moves you down deep into your cells.
Into the base of your spine, you feel it start moving you, then shaking you from your root chakra, the rhythm makes you start popping and dropping and moving throughout your entire body.
And unless you're dead, a Bass player can get into your body, and if you let go, really submit, the players fingers will dance your body around the floor like a puppeteer, moving you with the slapping and popping of his thick strings, making you move to his rhythm!
It's absolutely freeing to just let the music take control and let go.
    Bless the Bass Players!

I had the exact same headscratch with the thing that Doug Wimbish does. It kept me awake at night until I learned it. And was fortunate to learn it from the man himself. Did bass tech for him 👍

my Uncle Ainsworth Clarke imho is one of the best bassist in the world. He has played with some of the greatest reggae artist in the world. It used to fascinate me to see him do this.. We used to live in Queens back then as well.. I wonder if they knew each other.
